Anne Hathaway wears Derek Lam and Cartier jewels to ShoWest

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 17th, 2008

Anne Hathaway ShoWest.jpg

Anne Hathaway certainly chose an interesting ensemble from Derek Lam for the ShoWest awards, where she picked up the title of female star of the year.

We think the tiered skirt combined with the ankle-strap heels breaks up her lower half a little too much. The shoes make the skirt length look extra awkward.

What do you think? Tell us in the comments below.

Japan Fashion Week: Takumi Hatakeyama

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 17th, 2008

Japan Fashion Week.jpgClick image to enlarge.

Japanese fashion is so fun and creative, and so many of the things all fashion should be but too rarely is, that it is surprising that more attention isn’t paid to Japan Fashion Week. We’re doing our part to correct that by bringing you these images from the Takumi Hatakeyama fashion show. Not only is the collection fun, with a fierce sense of personal style, it’s easily relatable. You can take pieces from your own wardrobe to create similar looks. A fashion show is at its best when it gets you thinking about how you can wear pieces you own in new ways. But so many designers are so focused on having the next new exclusive shape or design that that’s often impossible.

Philip Bloch hosts exclusive Marchesa fashion show

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 17th, 2008

Philip_Bloch_Headshot_1[1].jpg

By exclusive they mean that you have to pay to get in. But we’ll debate their definition of exclusive another day since the event is being held for charity – St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Design Cares is presenting the event called A Night of A Thousand Lights. In addition to the live Marchesa runway show, the evening will include restaurant, wine and spirits tastings, a silent auction, music and dancing.

It’s all going down April 23 at 7 p.m. at the Roseland Ballroom. It would certainly be a ritzy, tax-deductable evening for any fashion fan. Stylist Philip Bloch will be on hand, which is sort of ironic considering how uncharitable some of his fashion commentary is.

Yay or Nay Wednesday: Christian Louboutin cutout bootie

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 12th, 2008

Louboutin cutout bootie.jpg

For many of us, booties themselves were questionable enough. So what do you think of this Christian Louboutin cutout bootie, $860?

And furthermore, when you see a shoe or bag or any item that you’re not sure about – does it help sway you when it’s by a favorite designer?

Would you buy a shoe by Christian Louboutin that you would never buy from a less iconic designer? Why?

Lauren Conrad and Nicky Hilton stir up the goss at L.A. Fashion Week

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 12th, 2008

conrad_hilton.jpg

LA Fashion Week is kind of the you-know-what stepchild of the fashion weeks. Sure, it’s sunny and fun, but as far as editors and celebrities it’s typically very c-list. But that’s been changing in the past few years.

However this year, an even bigger celeb-centric presence has meant that tensions have risen within the ranks of the designer mainstays and they’ve got the claws out.

Creative director Frida Giannini will show her Cruise 2009 collection in Rome this July. The show will be staged during Rome Fashion Week though it’s not likely to be on the official schedule.

It is hoped that the move will help publicize the 70th anniversary the newly redesigned Via Condotti Rome store.

Urban Outfitters plans new “space”

By Andrea Thatcher on March 7th, 2008

Urban Outfitters.jpg

While most retailers are struggling right now, Urban Outfitters seems to be coming up roses. Could it be that consumers are embracing unfinished hems, sloppy construction and faded fabrics to represent their economic troubles? I kid, I kid…

One of the store’s new pursuits is Space 1520. The new concept will include a large Urban Outfitters store, which will act as landlord to other boutiques. At the shopping mecca food, entertainment and beauty will be complimentary, and the building will open out into a farmers’ market.

While this concept may be expanded to other cities, something everyone can expect at their local UO is new designers. Miss Sixty, Fred Perry, and Insight were all recently introduced, and collaborations with Steven Alan, Charlotte Ronson, Corpus, Geren Ford, Paul & Joe Sister and Bing Bang are impending.
