By Andrea Thatcher on March 3rd, 2009

Here’s a little taste of what Britney Spears fans are in for as her Circus tour kicks off in New Orleans tonight. No matter what you think of her music, it’s always fun to see what she’ll be wearing next. The costumes were created by design duo Dan and Dean Caten of DSquared, who have been busy reinterpreting clown, trapeze artist and juggler costumes into sexy looks for Spears and her dancers to get hot and sweaty in.

Another little piece of Britney goss after the jump…

Rodarte takes their pants off … the market

By Andrea Thatcher on February 25th, 2009

Rodarte pants story.jpg

Designers are handling the recession in a variety of ways, which they discussed at a panel on the topic of luxury at the Hammer Museum in L.A. Monday. The Rodarte sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, for instance, have decided to stop selling pants.

“All anyone ever talks about is the economy, and we don’t sell our pants anyway,” Kate said. “So screw it. We won’t make them.”

The panel addressed making luxury clothing in an era when the consumer, even one who can afford it, it ill-inclined to purchase luxury goods. The answer seems to be redefinging luxury, something many in the fashion world (and beyond) have felt was necessary for some time now.

New York Fashion Week: Graey Fall 09

By Andrea Thatcher on February 14th, 2009

Graey 2.jpg

The scene: Stark bright white light and falls, with the bright colors of the Janet Kim’s designs standing out like jewels.

The fashion: Wavy patterns on flowy fabrics – grays, fuchsia, tangerine and black mingled with lace tights and high heeled T straps. The dresses were a sweet mix of tank dresses and doll dresses, some with sheer inlays.

“I wanted fun, surprising combinations- bright colors with lace and knits that show off a woman’s body in a subtle and feminine way,” Kim said.

Luella magazine rumors a bust

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 28th, 2009

Looks like the Luella magazine story was just that – a story.

A front cover starring Jourdan Dunn was even in circulation, but has been confirmed by as a fake.

“The rumours are simply not true. There is no Luella magazine,” a Luella rep said. “We keep telling people that it’s not happening but they run with the story anyway. It just goes to show that people will believe anything that they read.”

Video: Jason Wu and Isabel Toledo appear on ‘Today’ to talk Michelle Obama

By Kimberley Foster on January 21st, 2009

Yesterday, designers Jason Wu and Isabel Toledo – two folks who have become household names overnight – appeared on the Today show to talk Michelle Obama. At one end of the spectrum we have Wu, who at 26-year-old designed the ivory one-shoulder gown that the new First Lady wore at the inaugural ball. While on the other hand, we have 48-year-old Cuban-born Toledo, who has 25 years of experience behind her, and whose lemongrass sparkly suit was also selected by Mrs Obama to wear to the swearing-in ceremony. Hear what their reactions were to seeing their creations be part of history, by clicking the video above.

Another new magazine from a fashion favorite?

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 21st, 2009

While many of us eagerly await ex-Pop magazine editor Katie Grand’s new venture, LOVE (and a Beth Ditto cover for the Feb. 19 launch?), we have news of a Brit defect.

Rumor has it that designer Luella Bartley could be branching out into the publishing biz.

Fashionista claims that the British designer is currently recruiting stylish folks in New York for editorial shoots, to be photographed inside posh Manhattan abodes. A Teen Vogue ex-staff member is believed to be styling the shoots and that is all the dirt that has been dug up so far.

So, what to do we think? Would we like to have Luella oversee her own magazine? Um… yes please. Peaches who?

Michelle Obama chooses Jason Wu dress to mixed reviews

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 20th, 2009

The fashion community was expecting a lot of things from Michelle Obama, but an ethereal ivory gown wasn’t one of them! Talk of jewel tones was rampant, speculation about a halter neckline, premonitions that it would be something sleek and chic all swirled around the media.

But no, Obama suprised them all, including the designer, with her one-shouldered Jason Wu dress. The ivory silk chiffon confection was embroidered with silver thread and embellished with organza and Swarovski crystals.

The excitement surrounding Michelle Obama’s wardrobe choices for today and tonight’s inaugural festivities has reached the pitch one expects for the Oscars or an A-list celebrity wedding.

Italian tax authorities set their sites on Valentino with $39 million fine

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 14th, 2009

The Italian tax authorities are at it again, this time going after Valentino Garavani and business partner Giancarlo Giammetti with a $39 million fine for alleged tax evasion.

The charge is that the pair avoided declaring their revenues in Italy by moving their residence outside the country, while keeping their businesses there.

An official statement from Valentino managing director Ronald Feijen stated Garavani and Giammetti “moved their residence and all their interests to London more than 10 years ago, since the sale of their Maison … their positions had in the past already been verified and deemed entirely legitimate and regular.”

It was only late last year when Roberto Cavalli was cleared of a tax evasion indictment, after having been accused in 2002 of booking costs to restructure his villa as company expenses.

Peter Som cancels New York Fashion Week show

By Kimberley Foster on January 8th, 2009

petersom_billblassresign.jpgDeary me things don’t appear to be improving for Peter Som. He has just announced the cancellation of his New York Fashion Week show next month, following a split from Creative Design Studios, a division of Lord & Taylor LLC.

“We have realized that our strategic interests are no longer aligned and feel that this is the best direction for our company at this time,” said Elana Posner, co-owner and CEO of Peter Som Inc.

The news comes hot on the heels of Peter’s departure from Bill Blass, which has since closed its doors and filed for bankruptcy of its couture division.

The fashion week schedule is whittling away. Not good.

Oscar de la Renta asks ‘what recession?’

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 6th, 2009

Oscar de la Renta.jpg

While many designers are scaling back their fashion week presentations, Oscar de la Renta will be showing twice this season.

“[2008] has a been good year for me,” the designer told The Daily last month. “While some businesses faced tough times, I actually added 15 employees to my company. Sales-wise, the last three months have been solid for us.”

Like Calvin Klein, de la Renta will put on one fashion show for the press, the other for retailers. The shows are slated for 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Wednesday February 18.

Bad boy of NY fashion Marc Jacobs fined $1M

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on November 19th, 2008

Marc Jacobs $1M fine.jpg

It may be just desserts for Marc Jacobs, who routinely annoys the fashion elite by making them wait obscene amounts of time for his fashion shows to start at the 69th Regiment Armory.

Now the designer’s company has paid $1 million to New York State for allegedly using a go-between to pay the former superintendent of the Armory $35,000 worth of cash and goods (hmm…the latest It bags?) in return for preferential treatment when it came to booking the venue.
