Alice + Olivia dress on sale at shopbop

By Andrea Thatcher on January 29th, 2008

Alice%20%2B%20Olivia%20dress.jpg

Browsing the Shopbop sale, as we are wont to do, we came across this Alice + Olivia diamond shift dress on sale for only $89.10 – that’s more than half off! Only a size large is still available, but given the cinched waist, straight fit and designers’ habit for cutting small, we think a medium would fit into this fine. Layer it and you have a professional yet stylish look for work, just be sure to wear tights and flats to keep the mini from being too sexy.

Laila Azhar Suspender Jumper helps you suspend judgment on overall styles

By Andrea Thatcher on January 23rd, 2008

Intermix%20dress.jpg

Overalls are clearly out, as we learned on Project Runway this season, as if we didn’t already know. This dress may have an overall-type flair to it, but as the name implies it’s decidedly more jumper or suspenderish. And hey, suspenders recently weathered a brief comeback!

Perhaps we should go into fashion apologetics. While we contemplate this trailblazing career we want you to check out the Laila Azhar suspender jumper on sale at Intermix. It’s down to $109 from $395. That’s a chic boutique dress for a Banana Republic price.

Bargain Pick of the Week: Isaac Mizrahi for Target taffeta couture bodice dress

By Andrea Thatcher on January 17th, 2008

tafetta%20party%20dress.jpg

In honor of Isaac Mizrahi’s big news, we decided to peruse his short-lived collection for Target for our bargain pick of the week.

Even though calling everything and anything coutore is sort of a pet peeve of ours, we still really liked this taffeta couture bodice dress in bing cherry for only $49.99. It comes in lots of other colors, including basic black, if you like the cut but not the hue.

The Audrey Hepburn silhouette will obviously look lovely on the slim, but the waist is also high enough to camouflage heftier hips.

Designer Pick of the Week: Roksanda Ilincic strapless mini

By Andrea Thatcher on January 15th, 2008

Roksanda%20dress.jpg

Roksanda Ilincic’s first capsule cruise collection is headed for high sailing if this strapless mini dress, $1,495, is any indication. The Serbian was recently a featured designer on Net-a-Porter.com, and you know if she’s got this high-end e-tailer on her side her fashions will soon be in the hautest closets.

We like the dress for its clean but interesting lines, and the way it manages to be both classic and modern without being boring or too predictable.

Stars turn out for Art of Elysium in lieu of Globes

By Andrea Thatcher on January 14th, 2008

ArtofElysium-Heaven-01-thumb.jpg

There was a glittering red carpet in L.A. last night, even if it didn’t lead to the Golden Globes. The Art of Elysium’s “Heaven: Celebrating 10 Years” anniversary gala was held and many stars turned out in glamorous frocks.

Rachel Bilson and Ali Larter chose to wear white, and it’s refreshing to see two young stars wear white with such youthful freshness and not look like they’re going down the aisle. Bilson wore a long white silk gown, while Larter chose a dropped waist 1920s style down with spaghetti straps, adorned with a flow at the waist.

Past pics of 2008 Golden Globe winners: Cate Blanchett and Keira Knightley

By Andrea Thatcher on January 13th, 2008

Golden%20Globes%201.jpg

We’re not really sure it was worth listening to Billy Bush and Nancy O’Dell to hear about the Golden Globe winners live, so if you’ve waited until Monday morning to check out the highlights, good job.

Two of our favorite fashionista winners were Cate Blanchett for best supporting actress in I’m Not There, and Keira Knightley whose film Atonement won for best motion picture, drama.

Here we show Cate at the American Film Institute awards in December. We love the dress but find the length a little awkward. One of Keira’s 2007 style high points was the L.A. premiere of Atonement in an ethereal Rodarte dress.

Everyone’s favorite bargain retailer, H&M has released a new video podcast revealing some of their new spring styles hitting stores. Catarina Midby, head of fashion communication at H&M talks about the inspirations for their spring styles – like oriental prints and “happy colors” – and also gives us her top 5 items. The brown cropped biker jacket, $49.50 looks like one Serena wears on Gossip Girl, and an organic cotton poppy red blouse at only $29.90 satisfies your desire for style and your eco sensibility.

Kate Holmes goes high fashion in Lanvin – but is it pretty?

By Andrea Thatcher on January 9th, 2008

Katie%20Holmes%20critics.jpg

One unfortunate side effect of wearing something straight of the runway is that you’re going to get compared to a model. I feel like this Lanvin dress on Katie Holmes, left, just proves that no matter how perfect your “real life” body is, if Hollywood can be considered real life, the dress usually looks better on a model. Sure it looks classy with the Louboutin heels and I feel like one culprit here is the lighting, but I didn’t find this exciting enough for a red carpet awards show. Perhaps the only one this season!

What do you think of the dress?

Brittany Snow goes strapless at the 2008 Palm Springs International Film Festival

By Andrea Thatcher on January 7th, 2008

Brittany%20Snow.jpg

Brittany Snow walked the red carpet at the 2008 Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala this weekend in support of her film Hairspray, the sing-along version of which is being presented at the festival. Luckily she was dressed a lot chicer than her character in the film. We love her sleek style in a strapless, below-the-knee dress. The dress’s sparkling modern embellishment really makes the look.

To see Drew Barrymore’s Gucci number at the gala, and to vote on who wore it better – her or Natasha Poly – click over to Catwalk Queen.

New D&G ads showcase favorites from the runway, plus pre-order the Dolce & Gabbana spring collection at Bergdorf’s now

By Andrea Thatcher on January 7th, 2008

D%26G%20spring%20ad.jpg

One of ShinyStyle’s top 10 designers for spring, Dolce & Gabbana, is really hitting the scene. First, the ads for their D&G line shot by Mario Testino, above, have hit the net and feature one of our favorite dresses from the runway collection. A far cry from the dominatrix Dolce & Gabbana ads that have been grabbing headlines of late, these flower child images have us ready for summer sunshine.

D%26G%20spring%20show%20image.jpg

The lacy white frock Siri Tollerod wore in the spring/summer ’08 fashion show appears “in action” in the advertisement. We’re glad they chose this short version, as the longer one just seems a little overpowering on a tall thin frame, and would only look more ridiculous on less modelesque figures. Also featured in the ad is a mid-length trench that was styled loose with a brown leather belt on the runway and is open with rolled sleeves in the ads.

Keep reading for the Dolce & Gabbana collection at Bergdorf’s.

By Andrea Thatcher on January 2nd, 2008

The last time we saw the Cambell’s soup logo used in art was from Andy Warhol, and you saw how successful that was. So who knows what you could be contributing to when you vote for your favorite Go Red for Women Cambell’s inspired dress designed by Lisa Perry. Oh wait, we know! You’ll be contributing a $1 donation to Go Red for Women provided by Campbells. We’re unsure if the dress will be featured in the annual Go Red fashion show at New York Fashion Week, but Toni Braxton will be wearing the frock to kick off American Heart Month in February. 10 Outfits for 10 Occasions: Kelsey’s anniversary outfit

By Andrea Thatcher on December 31st, 2007

Kelsey%20outfit.jpg

Reader Kelsey wrote in to ask for advice on an outfit for her 3-year anniversary that would compliment her size-12 figure. We chose a silver satin Chloe and Reese dress with some accessories that pop. The dress’s high waistline, wide neckline, demure yet sexy length, and wide straps that allow for a bra will all do Kelsey justice. Along with the silver dress we chose BCBGirls rhinestone slingbacks because many of us already have a similar pair in our closet, and if you don’t, at $66, these will be a workhorse for your dressy wardrobe. Read on for more info on the rest of the dazzling accessories.

Christina Applegate’s Zuhair Murad dress on TV Guide cover

By Andrea Thatcher on December 24th, 2007

TV Guide has a video of their photo shoot with Christina Applegate for the Dec. 24 double issue, which you can watch above. You get to see lots more of her gorgeous Zuhair Murad dress. Christina Applegate has worn the designer in the past, at the Tony’s, and so may have had something to do with the selection. The Lebanese designer has a large Middle Eastern following, and is best known in the US for designing Jenna Fischer’s dress for the recent Emmy’s (fortunately or not, your call).
