Brits special: Leona Lewis makes a fashion and vegetarian statement

By Andrea Petrou on February 17th, 2010
The Brit Awards - Inside Arrivals

Leona Lewis made quite a statement at last nights Brit awards and it wasn’t just a fashion one.

The former X-Factor winner who was nominated for a few awards made quite a scene when she learned that foie gras would be served at the event and petitioned to have it removed from the menu.

And PETA’s Rose Glover applauded Lewis’ efforts. “Learning that the BRIT Awards is shunning foie gras is music to our ears. Foie gras is too cruel to produce in the UK, and we’re pleased that BRIT Award organizers have deemed it too cruel to serve.”

The popstar also gets voted as one of our best dressed for her futuristic William Tempest silver asymmetric dress, which she teamed up with an 80s style lace cuff and pink shoes.

We think this short structured number is much better than the usual long frocks Leona usually wears.

Fashion For Haiti show brings tears, tributes and tumbles

By Andrea Petrou on February 15th, 2010
Naomi Campbell walks the runway at Naomi Campbell's Fashion For Relief Haiti NYC 2010 Fashion Show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion in New York

Designers and celebrities including Donna Karan, Diane von Furstenberg, Georgina Chapman, Estelle, Kelly Osbourne, Margherita and Missoni leant their names to The Fashion for Relief show last Friday.

Hosted by Naomi Campbell the catwalk show was designed to help the people of earthquake-ravaged Haiti. The supermodel also took to the catwalk in a short, black, sequined flapper dress with sky scraper heels.

However, it wasn’t “alright on the night” for model du jour Agyness Deyn, who took a leaf out of Naomi’s previous book and took a tumble – twice – in her Burberry sandals, before winning our hearts by strutting back, barefoot

She tweeted afterward: “1st show of fashion week! Took a tumble! Got up! Fell again. Should have stayed down the 1st time. Twice! WTF! Ouch my knees!”

There also came a very special and tearful tribute for Alexander McQueen, which included model and Daphne Guinness walking down the catwalk in a glittery, full-length bodysuit from the late designer’s spring collection. Other models including Helena Christensen, Georgina Chapman and Naomi herself followed wearing designer Alexander McQueen from head to toe in tribute.

Jamie Winstone goes for red and fur at the London Evening Standard British Film Awards 2010

By Andrea Petrou on February 9th, 2010
London Evening Standard British Film Awards 2010 - Arrivals

While Eva Green donned a safe black frock for the London Evening Standard British Film Awards 2010, Jamie Winstone decided to be daring and it wasn’t just her frock.

The actress stepped onto the red carpet in an on-trend red strapless frock, which we think looks very similar to the pink one worn by Sarah Jessica Parker at the Did you hear about the Morgans? premier last year.

She teamed this up with a matching clutch bag, shoes and lips.

However, far more daring than her racy red dress was her fur jacket. We hope we’re wrong about it being real, but if it’s not it does a very good job of looking it.

Eva Green keeps it simple at the London Evening Standard British Film Awards

By Andrea Petrou on February 9th, 2010
London Evening Standard British Film Awards 2010 - Arrivals

Last night actors and actresses took to the red carpet for the London Evening Standard British Film Awards 2010.

Eva Green turned up at the event at the London Film Museum looking stunning in a black patterned dress where she also presented the award for best film.

However the actress best known for her role alongside Daniel Craig in the James Bond film Casino Royale, added in some of her well known eccentric style with her patent stripped shoes, which we think make her look like she stepped in two giant wasps.

But we think her little faux pas is more than made up with her hair and make-up. We think Eva looked amazing with her 20s style hair and the orange lipstick against her pale skin really gives her that flapper look.

View LFW shows from the comfort of your sofa

Didit Hediprasetyo Spring Summer 2010 Haute Couture fashion presentation - Paris

It’s good news for fashionistas, who like to keep their eye on all the latest trends but can’t make it to London Fashion Week.

Because this season every show shown in the British Fashion Council tent at Somerset House from the 19th to 24th will be streamed live meaning you can watch shows from designers including Jaeger London and PPQ on your laptop.

There will also be exclusive films from Hussein Chalayan, Boudicca, Twenty8Twelve and Danielle Scutt.

We think this is an excellent idea, especially as recently as a few years ago these shows could only be watched by magazine folk.

We’ve got our favourite slippers and mug for tea at the ready.

Grammy Awards worst dressed stars

By Andrea Petrou on February 1st, 2010

No celebrity fuelled event is complete without a worst dressed list, so we thought it only right to include this in our Grammy Awards special.

First on our hit list is usually perfectly dressed Jennifer Lopez who we can only assume got slightly confused about which trend she was meant to be following, with a half sci-fi, half chic look. We’re also not keen on the multi-layer style here either.

Ashanti’s frock, which looked as though the singer stole and wrapped her mother’s curtains around her also didn’t rock our boats. However we can’t deny the short fishtail style showed off the singer’s curves beautifully.

And although Ke$ha made it onto our gold trends list, we can’t say we’re overly impressed with her tassled short frock, especially when its teamed up with black sandals. Come on Ke$ha, you should know black shoes with a gold dress is a big no no.

However, our worst dressed winner has to be Ciara, who turned up as what can only be described as a pink Big Bird. Take that poodle off your shoulders and sack your stylist missus.

You may not agree with our choices, and if that’s the case then let us know by leaving your comments below.

Grammy Awards trend: Nude dresses

By Andrea Petrou on February 1st, 2010

Nude shades are going to be a big hit next season and it seems celebrities have already started wearing this trend.

Model and yummy mummy Heidi Klum showed off her pins in a nude short tunic style frock at this years Grammys.

Katy Perry also went for the same shade, but unlike Heidi opted for a long backless floor-length frock by Zac Posen.

And it was a nude mermaid look for Keri Hilson who arrived at the event in a stunning Dolce and Gabanna frock.

Who do you think wore this trend best? Let us know by leaving your comments below.

Grammy Awards trend: Gold

By Andrea Petrou on February 1st, 2010

There was a colourful array of frocks at this year’s Grammy Awards but one shade that made a huge appearance was gold.

Colbie Caillat donned a dark shade of this colour appearing in a long beaded and organza gown complete with a Jennifer Aniston style split, for her red carpet look, while Kathy Griffin sported a not so different style in a lighter shade.

However others, including Keri Hilson took the trend to a completely different level opting for metallic hues over the traditional red carpet sparkles. This was the same in Country Collaboration With Vocals winner Carrie Underwood’s case, who showed off her award wearing a dark gold metallic frock.

Irish rocker Imelda May also showed she’d been struck by the midas touch opting for a gold mid length frock for her performance at the event as did R&B singer Ke$ha.
Although we’re sure you’ll agree some pulled off this look far better than others.

Rihanna wears Viktor & Rolf dress to Grammy Awards pre-party

By Andrea Petrou on February 1st, 2010
Rihanna arrives at the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Gala in Beverly Hills

Rihanna not only pulled off her white feathered dress at this year’s Grammys, but also showed her versatile dress sense.

The Umbrella star turned up to the Grammy pre-party in a risky structured and panelled tulle dress from Viktor & Rolf’s spring 2010 collection.

We know if we were to try something like this we’d look like a giant marshmallow, but as always Rihanna, who teamed the fussy frock up with pink courts and her trademark quiff, looks amazing.

Some girls have all the fashion luck.

Do you think Rihanna pulls off this dress? Let us know by leaving your comments below.

Grammy Awards trend: Rihanna and Lea Michele wear feathers

By Andrea Petrou on February 1st, 2010
Grammy Awards 2010 - RED CARPET

Awards evenings always bring out trends we hadn’t really thought about, and this year’s Grammys have been no exception.

Although feathers have been lingering in the style aisle for a while, we haven’t seen many hit the catwalk or highstreet (unless of course you count the few which made an appearance over the Strictly Come Dancing phase.)

However, we have a feeling there will be a few more feathery styles lingering around following Rihanna’s decision to wear these at the Grammys, where she pulled off a white high-collared (and almost bridal) Elie Saab A/W 2009 dress, with a feathered neckline, perfectly.

Grammy Awards 2010 - RED CARPET

And feathers were also the style order of the day for Lea Michele. The American actress and singer went for a short one shouldered navy cocktail dress, with a skirt covered in feathers, by Romona Keveza.

The two starlets may have picked completely opposite styles but we think the feather trend they both chose works really well.

Mary J Blige wears Roberto Cavalli to the 52nd annual Grammy awards

By Andrea Petrou on February 1st, 2010
The 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards - Backstage

While Lady Gaga was busy showing off her outrageous dress sense, other singers decided to go for something a little bit more key, namely Mary J Blige.

The R&B singer walked down the red carpet and performed Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” on stage with classical singer Andrea Bocelli in a cobalt blue strapless beaded jersey dress from the Roberto Cavalli Pre-Spring 2010 Collection.

We think this colour, plus the beaded detail makes it a perfect awards frock and puts Ms Blige into our best dressed list.

Lady Gaga goes for three cool and kooky outfits at this year’s Grammys

By Andrea Petrou on February 1st, 2010
The 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards - Arrivals

While many celebrities chose to turn up in a demure fashion for this years Grammys, we’re pleased to see Lady Gaga chose not to.
And the kooky singer known for her outrageous outfits definitely did not disappoint, sporting three different outfits all designed by Giorgio Armani on the night.
She arrived at the event in a purple futuristic take on what we can only describe as a prom dress, complete with a star like staff and 70s style platform shoes. We don’t know what it is about this dress, but we have to admit we love everything about it, from the many glittery bands that shape the dress to the sheer sparkly sleeves.

The 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards - Arrivals

While performing at the event Miss G decided to go back to her trademark style, sporting a huge 80s style sleeved jumpsuit, which didn’t leave too much to the imagination. She completed the look with her famous fierce eye make up.

However we think Lady G saved her best outrageous outfit until last. She posed in a silver mini sequined dress complete with a nod to the futuristic trend and what can only be described as a comic book style hat, while showing off her two Grammys in the press room.

And unlike other designers who have in the past been rumoured not to work with Miss Gaga, Mr Armani seemed thrilled to be selected.

He said in a statement: “We hear Lady Gaga’s music everywhere we go. It is like a soundtrack of our times. In addition to her formidable songwriting skills, she is a modern fashion phenomenon. I am delighted to be creating these outfits on such an important night for her, the Grammys, and I wish her the best of luck.”

We’ve been trying to stay off the subject of Valentines Day until next week where we’ll be bringing you a range of love stories, underwear ranges and present ideas.

However, we couldn’t wait to tell you about Lulu Guinness’s lip-themed pop up shop, which will be making cameo move into London’s Carnaby Street from 8 February to coincide with Valentine’s Day and London Fashion Week.

Amongst a range of Lulu goodies, you’ll be able to get your hands on her sought after Lip Clutch bags, and you’ll be also doing a good deed.

A percentage of all the sales from Lulu’s Lip clutch bags will also go towards creating bursaries to support students studying the historical and contemporary practice of fashion.

But you better get there quickly as the shop will only be lingering around until 22 Febuary.

Models and designers create bears to help blind teenagers get a feel for fashion

By Andrea Petrou on January 26th, 2010

Bears.jpgFashion designers and models have designed a range of bears to help blind teenagers get a feel for fashion.

Twiggy, Betty Jackson, Lulu Guinness, Vivienne Westwood and Matthew Williamson have designed and dressed Steiff Bears for the charity Living Paintings, which helps blind children and adults. The bears will be auctioned at the V&A on the evening of February 25th 2010 and the proceeds will help the charity develop new feely images to help blind teenagers get to grips with the fashion choices open to them.

Lulu Guinness who designed her bear to wear her signature colours of black, white and red, said: “My bear is wearing one of my Beret purses on his head, with a lovely black and white stripey bow around his neck and I’ve put him inside one of my tote bags. I thought it was fun to inject an element of fashion into my bear design, because I believe Fashion is something that should not be taken too seriously. I hope that blind teenagers can interact with this and enjoy.”

If you want to get your hands on one of these bears then call Living Paintings on 01635 299771. Bids for any of the bears can be taken on the night in person or by phone, or in advance.
