There was a colourful array of frocks at this year’s Grammy Awards but one shade that made a huge appearance was gold.
Colbie Caillat donned a dark shade of this colour appearing in a long beaded and organza gown complete with a Jennifer Aniston style split, for her red carpet look, while Kathy Griffin sported a not so different style in a lighter shade.
However others, including Keri Hilson took the trend to a completely different level opting for metallic hues over the traditional red carpet sparkles. This was the same in Country Collaboration With Vocals winner Carrie Underwood’s case, who showed off her award wearing a dark gold metallic frock.
Irish rocker Imelda May also showed she’d been struck by the midas touch opting for a gold mid length frock for her performance at the event as did R&B singer Ke$ha.
Although we’re sure you’ll agree some pulled off this look far better than others.
Rihanna not only pulled off her white feathered dress at this year’s Grammys, but also showed her versatile dress sense.
The Umbrella star turned up to the Grammy pre-party in a risky structured and panelled tulle dress from Viktor & Rolf’s spring 2010 collection.
We know if we were to try something like this we’d look like a giant marshmallow, but as always Rihanna, who teamed the fussy frock up with pink courts and her trademark quiff, looks amazing.
Some girls have all the fashion luck.
Do you think Rihanna pulls off this dress? Let us know by leaving your comments below.
Awards evenings always bring out trends we hadn’t really thought about, and this year’s Grammys have been no exception.
Although feathers have been lingering in the style aisle for a while, we haven’t seen many hit the catwalk or highstreet (unless of course you count the few which made an appearance over the Strictly Come Dancing phase.)
However, we have a feeling there will be a few more feathery styles lingering around following Rihanna’s decision to wear these at the Grammys, where she pulled off a white high-collared (and almost bridal) Elie Saab A/W 2009 dress, with a feathered neckline, perfectly.
And feathers were also the style order of the day for Lea Michele. The American actress and singer went for a short one shouldered navy cocktail dress, with a skirt covered in feathers, by Romona Keveza.
The two starlets may have picked completely opposite styles but we think the feather trend they both chose works really well.
While Lady Gaga was busy showing off her outrageous dress sense, other singers decided to go for something a little bit more key, namely Mary J Blige.
The R&B singer walked down the red carpet and performed Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” on stage with classical singer Andrea Bocelli in a cobalt blue strapless beaded jersey dress from the Roberto Cavalli Pre-Spring 2010 Collection.
We think this colour, plus the beaded detail makes it a perfect awards frock and puts Ms Blige into our best dressed list.
While many celebrities chose to turn up in a demure fashion for this years Grammys, we’re pleased to see Lady Gaga chose not to.
And the kooky singer known for her outrageous outfits definitely did not disappoint, sporting three different outfits all designed by Giorgio Armani on the night.
She arrived at the event in a purple futuristic take on what we can only describe as a prom dress, complete with a star like staff and 70s style platform shoes. We don’t know what it is about this dress, but we have to admit we love everything about it, from the many glittery bands that shape the dress to the sheer sparkly sleeves.
While performing at the event Miss G decided to go back to her trademark style, sporting a huge 80s style sleeved jumpsuit, which didn’t leave too much to the imagination. She completed the look with her famous fierce eye make up.
However we think Lady G saved her best outrageous outfit until last. She posed in a silver mini sequined dress complete with a nod to the futuristic trend and what can only be described as a comic book style hat, while showing off her two Grammys in the press room.
And unlike other designers who have in the past been rumoured not to work with Miss Gaga, Mr Armani seemed thrilled to be selected.
He said in a statement: “We hear Lady Gaga’s music everywhere we go. It is like a soundtrack of our times. In addition to her formidable songwriting skills, she is a modern fashion phenomenon. I am delighted to be creating these outfits on such an important night for her, the Grammys, and I wish her the best of luck.”
We’ve been trying to stay off the subject of Valentines Day until next week where we’ll be bringing you a range of love stories, underwear ranges and present ideas.
However, we couldn’t wait to tell you about Lulu Guinness’s lip-themed pop up shop, which will be making cameo move into London’s Carnaby Street from 8 February to coincide with Valentine’s Day and London Fashion Week.
Amongst a range of Lulu goodies, you’ll be able to get your hands on her sought after Lip Clutch bags, and you’ll be also doing a good deed.
A percentage of all the sales from Lulu’s Lip clutch bags will also go towards creating bursaries to support students studying the historical and contemporary practice of fashion.
But you better get there quickly as the shop will only be lingering around until 22 Febuary.
Fashion designers and models have designed a range of bears to help blind teenagers get a feel for fashion.
Twiggy, Betty Jackson, Lulu Guinness, Vivienne Westwood and Matthew Williamson have designed and dressed Steiff Bears for the charity Living Paintings, which helps blind children and adults. The bears will be auctioned at the V&A on the evening of February 25th 2010 and the proceeds will help the charity develop new feely images to help blind teenagers get to grips with the fashion choices open to them.
Lulu Guinness who designed her bear to wear her signature colours of black, white and red, said: “My bear is wearing one of my Beret purses on his head, with a lovely black and white stripey bow around his neck and I’ve put him inside one of my tote bags. I thought it was fun to inject an element of fashion into my bear design, because I believe Fashion is something that should not be taken too seriously. I hope that blind teenagers can interact with this and enjoy.”
If you want to get your hands on one of these bears then call Living Paintings on 01635 299771. Bids for any of the bears can be taken on the night in person or by phone, or in advance.
Politician’s wives are fast becoming regulars on our fashion radars and we’ve regularly featured many an outfit worn by US first lady Michelle Obama and our own home grown Samantha Cameron.
However this time it’s Sarah Brown that’s popped her head over the fashion parapet.
The Prime Ministers wife has teamed up with Naomi Campbell to launch this year’s annual Fashion for Relief event, which will see a range of models and celebs strutting their stuff in designer outfits, which will then be auctioned off for charity.
This year, the event, which was launched by Sarah and Naomi, along with Erin O’Connor and Yasmin le Bon, and will take place on the 18th February, will raise money to help the victims of the Haiti earthquake.
Whatever you may think of them, celebrities have always been amazing at turning up and helping at charity events, and the Haiti Telethon events, which took place over the weekend in Los Angeles, New York and our very own London really showed this.
A-listers including Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt and Beyonce turned up in their droves to help raise a record breaking £35 million for victims of the earthquake. And while some took to the stage to get that money pouring in, others were more than happy to take a backstage seat answering donation calls.
However, no matter what they decided to do they looked gorgeous, especially Beyonce and Rihanna who attended the Hope For Haiti Now concert, at The Hospital Club in London.
While we were sitting at home away from the rain and watching Dancing on Ice it was a completely different night for LA’s celebrities who once again donned their best frocks for the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The red carpet was covered in Hollywood’s A-list women flaunting this season’s hot looks including Kate Hudson and Marion Cotillard who opted for angelic bridal white.
Other stars such as Mariah Carey and Christina Hendricks decided to go the other way choosing key colour red to make their grand entrance. And as always the black frock was not forgotten with Signory Weaver, Sandra Bullock and Penelope Cruz all looking glam in this traditional colour.
Watch the red carpet event and other celeb’s frocks on the video below.
The winter weather across Britain and Europe may have stopped football matches and commutes into work but film premiers haven’t let a few pesky flakes stop them.
Yesterday Rachel McAdams braved freezing temperatures in Berlin, where she wore a a green one shoulder Alberta Ferretti crinkled silk chiffon gown to the German premiere of “Sherlock Holmes”.
She completed the look with 1940s hair, which stayed put throughout the snow.
We’re all for looking good on a night out but would you brave freezing temperatures and go out in a short sleeved top or mini skirt in weather like this?
Celebs turned out in force for the first awards evening of 2010 and The People’s Choice Awards held at the Nokia Theatre last night did not disappoint, giving us the drama and fashion sites you would expect from such a star studded bash.
Although Mariah Carey looked a vision in her white mermaid style dress, the diva didn’t do so well when it came to taking the stage to accept her Favorite R&B Singer award. She was claimed to stumble and waffle for a good few minutes before being helped off the stage by her hubby.
However other celebs caught our eye for the right reasons. Sandra Bullock wowed the crowd with a gold brocade Vivienne Westwood frock, which she teamed up with Brian Atwood heels. Taylor Swift also looked her usual stunning self in a gorgeous white beaded dress.
Also making an appearance were Jessica Alba in Antonio Berardi, and Diane Kruger in Hervé Léger. We can’t wait to see what the other events of the year hold for the fashion world.
We’ve covered many politician’s wife’s fashion here at ShinyStyle and although we’ve been taken by their styles (who could forget Samantha Cameron’s polka dot M&S dress) one lady that always comes up trumps is Michelle Obama.
The wife of the American president has really come into her own in the fashion stakes stepping out in her trademark high waisted belt and other trends from leopard print to smart tweed.
So we thought it was about time we put together a gallery of her style. Use her fashion sense for your own inspiration, and you may just bag yourself a man in power too.
