First looks: Taylor Momsen for New Look

By Andrea Petrou on January 29th, 2010

Late last year we reported that Taylor Momsen could be the face of New Look and we weren’t sure if this was just a rumour or if it would actually happen.

Well guess what, it’s happened!

In the first snaps of the 2010 campaign the Gossip Girl, and one of our favourite style icons, poses in a range of Spring outfits for the highstreet store and we absolutely love the kooky stripped dress and on-trend harem pants.

We have to admit we weren’t too sure of this partnership as we thought Taylor was made of higher designer things (we expected at least a Gucci or Guess spread).

However we think we should eat our trilby hats as we think Taylor’s funky style really works with this brand and shows highstreet can be just as good as designer.

We can’t wait to get our hands on some of the range when it hits stores later on this year.

Ugly Betty series to be taken off air

By Andrea Petrou on January 28th, 2010

ugly_betty-1.jpgWe’ve really grown to love Ugly Betty and loved the way she’s blossomed over the past series. But it seems its time to say bye bye to Betty and her friends.

ABC has announced that the show, which is only half way through its current series in the US, will be taken off our screens in the middle of March. This is because the fashionista (of sorts) hasn’t been rocking the UK’s boats of late and thus viewing figures have dwindled.

We’re actually quite sad about this news as we’ve been hooked on the show since it began in 2006. And despite winning a Golden Globe and Emmy awards, it shows even fashion based TV can be fickle.

Looks like we’ll have to start recording the series over the next few months so we’ve got something to back on.

Lulu Guinness launches lip themed pop up shop to coincide with Valentines day

By Andrea Petrou on January 28th, 2010

Lulu.jpg
We’ve been trying to stay off the subject of Valentines Day until next week where we’ll be bringing you a range of love stories, underwear ranges and present ideas.

However, we couldn’t wait to tell you about Lulu Guinness’s lip-themed pop up shop, which will be making cameo move into London’s Carnaby Street from 8 February to coincide with Valentine’s Day and London Fashion Week.

Amongst a range of Lulu goodies, you’ll be able to get your hands on her sought after Lip Clutch bags, and you’ll be also doing a good deed.

A percentage of all the sales from Lulu’s Lip clutch bags will also go towards creating bursaries to support students studying the historical and contemporary practice of fashion.

But you better get there quickly as the shop will only be lingering around until 22 Febuary.

Evans enlists top plus size models for its new advertising campaign

By Andrea Petrou on January 28th, 2010

Evans.jpg
Evans has been the hero for plus sized ladies for a good few years now, and definitely deserves recognition for leading the way in plus size clothing.

However as a pioneer for these fashions its somewhat been left at the wayside as other retailers, such as Asos, which launched its Curve collection last week, breeze into the plus size market. And it’s not just retailers who have been making (a very appreciated) bigger is beautiful storm.

V Magazine dedicated an issue to plus sized models, while last year Glamour used a curvy woman for its cover. Mark Fast also cast size 14 girls to walk in his LFW show

Therefore it’s no surprise that Evans has really stepped up its advertising game. The retailer has enlisted a range of top plus size models including Britney Vecchio, Hayley Morley Amber Tolliver, Peeky and Crystal Renn to front its new campaign. And we love this shot which shows them wearing a selection of this season’s must have jackets.

We really hope these beautiful women can show those teeny tiny “give them a burger” models that bigger is far more attractive.

Posh and Becks pose for his and hers covers for 10magazine

By Andrea Petrou on January 28th, 2010

Posh and Becks are rarely out of the media spotlight and if you thought this year would be a quieter one for the couple then think again.

Victoria has already racked up inches as high as her stilletoes this month with news that she may be designing a hotel in Dubai with Karl Lagerfeld. And just in case we haven’t seen enough of the pair, they’re now appearing on his ‘n’ hers covers to mark the 10 year anniversary of 10 magazine.

In the first ever celebrity cover for the mag, which was shot by Cedric Buchet, both show off their toned gym bodies. Victoria kept it posh in a range of outfits including a nude Roland Mouret bodycon slip as well as a black bodice and all in one.

In an interview with the magazine she also hinted that her fashion collection wasn’t going to disappear anytime soon, claiming: ‘I still plan to be doing this in 10, 15, 20 years time, so it’s got to be done right.’

However David chose to get all down and dirty for his cover. Hmm if our local mechanic looked like that we might not feel so upset about handing over those huge amounts of cash to get our cars fixed.

Melissa Odabash to donate 25% of Haiti bikini sales to helping victims of the earthquake

By Andrea Petrou on January 27th, 2010

m haiti.jpgThose of us who woke up to find ice on our cars this morning will shudder at the thought of wearing a bikini, but we need to to fast forward your minds to that summer holiday and get buying now.

Why? Because swimwear designer Melissa Odabash will be donating 25 per cent of the profits from each of her Haiti Bikini sales to Unicef to help the victims of the earthquake.

The designer told Vogue: “This year I had already named a bikini Haiti, and it seems only fitting that 25 per cent made on the sale of this bikini should go directly to Unicef to help the people of Haiti rebuild their homes and their lives.”

We can’t think of a better reason to begin building up our holiday wardrobe from now, and we might even concede and say its ok to wear this in a local pool.

Sex and the City cast begin filming two more movies

By Andrea Petrou on January 27th, 2010

Setc films.jpg
Sit down Sex and the City fans, as we think this latest update may just knock you off your Manolo Blahnik clad feet.

While we’re eagerly awaiting the opening of the second film (if you missed the trailer see it here) the cast are back in their heels and filming not one, but two more movies.

According the The Sun this is because Carrie and the rest of the leading ladies, who are all in their 40s, fear that they are beginning to age and won’t look as good in the parts.

Whatever the reason, it’s fantastic news for us SATC fans, although we wouldn’t mind seeing the girls with a few wrinkles, it would make us feel better about ours.

Are Alexa Chung’s clogs the new summer Ugg?

By Andrea Petrou on January 27th, 2010
Celebs at Chanel Fashion Show - Paris

Alexa Chung usually can’t put a fashion foot wrong, but today may be the day when that all changes.

The model turned TV presenter was spotted at the Chanel Couture 2010 show in Paris wearing a pair of clogs from the designer’s SS2010 collection.

We know they’re meant to be for warmer days and we agree that Alexa has paired them up well with tights and a gorgeous frock from the Chanel collection, but we can’t help thinking that these clogs may just actually be the new summer Uggs. You either love them or you hate them.

Gucci to create couture fashion line

By Andrea Petrou on January 27th, 2010

Frida.jpgParis couture week is in full fashion swing with designers such as Dior, Armani and Givenchy already showing their beautiful creations.

And despite the sad and prominent absence of Christian Lacroix, which went into administration last year, it seems the fashion world is picking itself up with some exciting news.

According to WWD Gucci has stepped into the couture gap and creative director Frida Giannini has said the company is currently working on its first couture collection pieces.

However, unlike other houses Gucci will be taking its designs to new levels, shunning the Paris couture runway; for appointment only commissions, which will be aimed at celebrity clients. And we all know these aren’t going to be cheap.

Models and designers create bears to help blind teenagers get a feel for fashion

By Andrea Petrou on January 26th, 2010

Bears.jpgFashion designers and models have designed a range of bears to help blind teenagers get a feel for fashion.

Twiggy, Betty Jackson, Lulu Guinness, Vivienne Westwood and Matthew Williamson have designed and dressed Steiff Bears for the charity Living Paintings, which helps blind children and adults. The bears will be auctioned at the V&A on the evening of February 25th 2010 and the proceeds will help the charity develop new feely images to help blind teenagers get to grips with the fashion choices open to them.

Lulu Guinness who designed her bear to wear her signature colours of black, white and red, said: “My bear is wearing one of my Beret purses on his head, with a lovely black and white stripey bow around his neck and I’ve put him inside one of my tote bags. I thought it was fun to inject an element of fashion into my bear design, because I believe Fashion is something that should not be taken too seriously. I hope that blind teenagers can interact with this and enjoy.”

If you want to get your hands on one of these bears then call Living Paintings on 01635 299771. Bids for any of the bears can be taken on the night in person or by phone, or in advance.

H&M’s organic cotton range claimed to be contaminated with GM cotton

By Andrea Petrou on January 26th, 2010

Hennes.jpgWhile we’re all becoming more eco-conscious when it comes to our clothing it seems H&M is taking one step forward and two steps back.

The highstreet store, which in the past has been criticised for it’s lack of ethical values, has found itself back in the firing line with claims that it’s certified-organic cotton clothing has been contaminated with genetically modified cotton from India.

According to German independent lab Impetus, roughly a third of cotton samples tested contained genetically modified cotton. This was traced back to India, which is responsible for more than half of the global supply of organic cotton which is used by H&M.

Although we can’t blame H&M entirely for this as the chain hasn’t actually commissioned this cotton, Monika Buening of the Federal ConSumer Affairs Agency, has said H&M should have monitored their supply carefully.

“The fashion chains were not vigilant enough,” she told the German edition of the Financial Times.

A spokeswoman from H&M agreed that GM cotton could have slipped into the label’s organic collections. She said the high street store was investigating the matter.

Does this stop you from wanting to buy the company’s organic range? Let us know by leaving your comments below.

By Andrea Petrou on January 26th, 2010
Fashion For Relief Announcement 2010 - Photocall

Politician’s wives are fast becoming regulars on our fashion radars and we’ve regularly featured many an outfit worn by US first lady Michelle Obama and our own home grown Samantha Cameron.

However this time it’s Sarah Brown that’s popped her head over the fashion parapet.

The Prime Ministers wife has teamed up with Naomi Campbell to launch this year’s annual Fashion for Relief event, which will see a range of models and celebs strutting their stuff in designer outfits, which will then be auctioned off for charity.

This year, the event, which was launched by Sarah and Naomi, along with Erin O’Connor and Yasmin le Bon, and will take place on the 18th February, will raise money to help the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

We hope other retailers (namely Selfridges) take note of this gorgeous collection and follow suit.
