Festival goers arriving for the Reading Festival, at Richfield Avenue in Reading.

Oh dear, another festival, another downpour. This weekend it’s the Reading Festival and the weather is shocking. Already it’s a mudbath and it isn’t set to get any better. Sorry guys. This year’s headliners include Pulp, The Strokes, My Chemical Romance and The Strokes. Enjoy the rain.

ShinyStyle loves: Fringed fashion

Jessie J wore a quirky lilac-fringed bodysuit for her performance at V Festival

If you’re sad that summer is pretty much over now and you’d like to cling on to your louche, festival-style outfits as much longer as possible, it’s worth taking note of the summer’s fringing trend which will happily still be wearable when winter comes. We spotted more than a couple of artists rocking the trend at V Festival over the weekend, as Jessie J wore a quirky eighties-inspired bodysuit with purple fringed sleeves for a dramatic take on dancewear and Katy B teamed black skinny jeans and a band T-shirt with her fringed black cardigan for a 70s hard rock look.

Wild West-influenced styles are huge for this Autumn/Winter, a look that fringing and tasselled pieces will fit into nicely. For wrapping up warm you could try Urban Outfitter’s amazing plaid hooded cape with tassels (checks and tartan are massive this season too) and team with a little dress and opaque tights for a snug and chic back-to-school look. Or if you want to go a bit more down the evening-wear route try a showgirl-style fringed dress like the amazingly sexy dip-dyed red one that we found at Rare – big earrings and some simple high-heeled sandals will make you look like a glamorous heiress.

Of course, if you’re tentative when it comes to the idea of head-to-toe fringing and can’t get the image of Dolly Parton out of your head, a simple fringed bag or accessory can add a touch of laidback bohemian cool to an outfit. We love ASOS’ black fringed hoop earrings – so Edie Sedgwick.

Check out the gallery for our favourite fringed pieces on the high street.

Rihanna showed off her shaggy new 70s brunette 'do with a sexy waist-tied deniim shirt and leather hot-pants

Was I the only person in the world to have not gone to V Festival this weekend? It’s certainly been the only thing anyone on my Facebook has been writing about anyway.

It looks like the line-up this year was absolutely amazing for pop-lovers, with the likes of Rihanna at the top of the billing. Ri-Ri herself was every bit the Bajan vision she normally is in a sexy tie-waist denim shirt and a pair of figure-hugging leather shorts. We couldn’t help noticing that her scarlet hair is gone all of a sudden in exchange for a shaggy, honey-brunette ‘do, which looks great but we’re unsure as to which we prefer..

Jessie J looked radiant and excited to be performing despite her broken leg in a mental Lets Get Physical style panelled bodysuit, with long lilac fringing trailing along the sleeves to compliment her new purple hair. Jessie wasn’t the only one to rock fringed outfits for the festival either, as Katy B performed in a cool black shredded jacket and Noisettes singer Shingai Shoniwa wore a scarlet bodysuit with fringed details..

The festival’s biggest fashion surprise, however, was N-Dubz’ Tulisa in a Jeremy Scott-style one-shouldered dress in a bold animal print. Long gone are the days of baby pink trackies onstage for our new favourite X Factor judge – Tulisa clearly knows that now is the time to have a little bit more fun with her look. Yabbadabbadoo!

Shiny loves independent festivals: Farm Festival 2011

By emilyborrett on August 15th, 2011

There were quirky decorations all over the festival, but I was particularly charmed by the beer tent which was adorned with old-fashioned umbrellas, bunting and antique lampshades

Anyone who’s been reading ShinyStyle for a while may remember last year’s post about Farm Festival, an intimate independently-run event in Somerset that marries anarchic creativity with a love for music and not taking yourself too seriously.I’m all for small, intimate events that celebrate creativity and aren’t all about draining your bank balance, so it holds a great lure for me. Farm Festival is one of my favourite events of the year, so naturally I had to come again. This post is a little late but hopefully some of you readers will read about my experience there and want to give it a try next year.

Again a lot of love and care had gone into the event, which was bigger and more inventive than last year. As soon as I’d unpacked and pitched my teepee (the easiest tent to put up ever, apparently, but it still perplexed me) I headed over to the beer tent with my friends to get a pint of Black Rat cider and was struck by the whimsical and charming decorations. The entire ceiling of the tent structure had been decorated with antique lampshades, upside-down umbrellas and school fete-style bunting trailing down the walls. Outside, each dustbin was lovingly hand-painted with patterns of flowers, leaping fish and abstract designs and curious wooden handpainted creatures and objects peeped out of the grass. It is quite a magical place which, thanks to the intimate size of the festival, you can learn like the back of your hand within a couple of hours.

On Saturday I was transported back to the 90s for the headlining act Dodgy, whose hit “Staying Out For The Summer” I’d completely forgotten about (I have pretty much mentally blocked out the 90s) but surprisingly could remember most of the words to. I am ashamed to admit that I didn’t spend nearly as much time this year checking out the live acts – but that was only because I was running around in their mysterious Lazer Cave tent and dutty winding in the Dubstep tent. I don’t even like dub that much but Farm Festival’s dub tent is probably one of the most fun places in the world, I’d regularly drive to Bruton to go.

As usual I hit the vintage stalls pretty sharpish with my boyfriend and friends to hunt for ridiculously OTT glitzy clothes to wear in the evening. The prices had gone up a little this year but so had the quality of the vintage, so it’s a fair trade off. I dithered for a long time between a white neon-printed pair of city shorts, an achingly beautiful pair of old men’s brogues and a gold brocade wedding dress – naturally in the end I chose the gold brocade dress, priced at £16, which I wore all weekend until I was told to take it off.

The hats were, again, quite spectacular. I saw a lot of boys cavorting with their T-shirts off wearing Viking horns and wolf hats (perhaps they think it justifies silly behaviour?) while the girls opted for romantic flower garlands, wide-brimmed straw hats and vintage pillbox hats. Also brilliant were the gallant face-painters, who did particularly excellent tiger facepaint and painted my face like a magic kitten for two pounds.

If you want to see for yourself a few snapshots of my FarmFest experience, check out the gallery above. It’s been a brilliant highlight of my summer.

ShinyStyle loves: Fashion-forward female musicians

Florrie

Watch this space for the new girl drummer and singer Florrie, whose Grace Kelly looks and chic sense of style have caught the attention of fashion editors and labels already. We love her fresh, clean style - plus she's beautiful too.

This weekend it was the legendary Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago, which was celebrating it’s 20th anniversary in style. We couldn’t help noticing that this year there were just as many girls rocking out onstage as there were boys – Taylor Momsen drew crowds performing with her band The Pretty Reckless, head-to-toe in sexy black leather and stockings, while elsewhere at the festival Ellie Goulding sang her heart out with an acoustic guitar and Lykke Li performed looking darkly mysterious in a leather cape-top.

I don’t know about you but I couldn’t be prouder that we have so many exciting, talented and fashion-forward female musicians at the moment. I’m coming over all riot grrl.

Above is a gallery of our favourite female musicians at the moment, who are combining a love of fashion and dressing up with a geniune talent and passion for creating music. Some are new faces, some are old favourites — naturally Florence Welch is there, for doing it Stevie Nicks-style in dramatic floaty gowns and ethereal vintage. Check it out and feel the power.

Kate Moss loses her £14,000 engagement ring while partying at the Glastonbury Festival

By Andrea Petrou on June 27th, 2011

Kate Moss lost her £14,000 engagement ring while partying at the Glastonbury Festival.

The supermodel – who was watching fiance Jamie Hince perform with his band The Kills at the music event in Somerset, South West England – was said to be “hyperventilating” after realising she had mislaid the sparkler in the mud.

An insider explained: “Everyone was looking for the ring, with Kate practically hyperventilating at the side of the stage. She was screeching at her mates, begging them to get down on their hands and knees , and trawl through the mud for the sparkler.

“Even Kate was half-heartedly flicking mud around with her welly, trying to unearth the ring.”

However, much to her amusement, Kate – who is due to tie the knot with Jamie this Friday (01.07.11) in Oxfordshire, South East England – eventually found the ring stuck in the bottom of her handbag amongst some tissue.

The source added to the Daily Mirror newspaper: “Two hours later, and still crying, she went to the loo only to root through her bag for a tissue and magically find the ring. It had been there the whole time.

“Kate was cackling hysterically but no one else found it quite so funny.”

The couple are reportedly planning “festival-style” nuptials, with rumoured performances from the likes of Snoop Dogg and Gossip frontwoman Beth Ditto.

V Festival Special: Florence Welch wows with her range of outfits

By admin on August 23rd, 2010

Florence Welch showed she had the style love this weekend at V Festival rocking up on stage at both festival sites in a range of outfits.

At the Hylands site in Chelmsford the singer opted for a short black v-neck dress embellished with gold sequins at the bottom. She paired this up with sheer leggings and heels.

The Florence and the Machines singer, however, went for something more romantic for the Weston Park stage in Staffordshire opting for a sheer black dress, complete with sheer billowing sleeves. She finished off the mood with a bunch of flowers on the set.
