V Festival Special: Florence Welch wows with her range of outfits

By admin on August 23rd, 2010

Florence Welch showed she had the style love this weekend at V Festival rocking up on stage at both festival sites in a range of outfits.

At the Hylands site in Chelmsford the singer opted for a short black v-neck dress embellished with gold sequins at the bottom. She paired this up with sheer leggings and heels.

The Florence and the Machines singer, however, went for something more romantic for the Weston Park stage in Staffordshire opting for a sheer black dress, complete with sheer billowing sleeves. She finished off the mood with a bunch of flowers on the set.

V Festival Special: Pixie Lott channels Taylor Momsen’s trademark stockings

By admin on August 23rd, 2010

Could we be hearing more moans of dismay from Taylor Momsen very soon?

The actress, turned rocker, last week had a rant about how pop singers are wearing outfits that are more rocky than poppy and blurring the lines of the music. Talking to Spin Magazine she cited Rihanna as one culprit for wearing “f—— leather jackets,” claiming it was “really annoying.”

So we don’t think she’ll be pleased to see that Pixie Lott channelled her style at this weekend’s V Festival.

Performing at the Hylands site, Pixie went for a cute black mini, which she teamed up with Taylor style stockings. We think she looks great, but what will madam rocker have to say?

V Festival Special: Paloma Faith glams it up

By admin on August 23rd, 2010

Paloma Faith is one of our current fashionista favourites.

She’s cool, sassy and her eclectic style really makes her stand out from the crowd alsways opting for headpieces that rival Lady Gaga’s and wearing bold make-up to match whatever eccentric outfits she’s wearing.

So you can imagine how pleased we were when we saw the singer keeping in with her stylish tradition at V over the weekend.

Ms Faith took to the stage at Weston Park Staffordshire in a red flapper style asymmetric fringed frock and gave it her own special twist with a high crown headpiece. We think she looks amazing.

V Festival Special: Taylor Momsen takes to the stage

By admin on August 23rd, 2010

The disappointing August weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of V Festival revellers this weekend.

Thousands of wellie clad ladies (and of course gentleman) hit the two venues to watch a range of singers including the Prodigy, Diana Vickers and Florence and the Machines. Despite complaining that pop was ruining the “rock” image Taylor Momsen also decided to make an appearance at the festival performing with her band Pretty Reckless.

Shedding her pretty Gossip Girl image the singer went for her statement suspender set complete with a teeny tiny studded corset style frock for day 2 of the Festival at Weston Park in Staffordshire.

Did you watch Taylor perform and what do you think of her outfit?

Let us know by leaving your comments in the box below.

And keep reading because today we’re dedicating ShinyStyle to all the celebrity looks at the festival.

A fun weekend at the farm: Crazy headgear at Farm Festival

By Elaine LaPersonerie on August 4th, 2010

Well, I went to Farm Festival, guys, and it was pretty cool.

As I arrived at Gilcombe Farm on Friday, I was instantly struck by Farm Festival’s unique charms – a fun, creative atmosphere that’s similar to one that you’d experience at Glasto, but for a fraction of the price. Balloons up to the rafters in the music tent, hand-painted artwork popping up all over the place – you could really feel the love that had gone into creating this event. Even the dustbins were individually decorated and painted.

Music favourites for the weekend were Chicago-based The Electric on Saturday night, who were all about really old-school rap and strong R & B vocals from their female vocalist, who really had a set of pipes on her. The ensemble is the new musical venture from rapper DJ Vadim – for an idea of how they sounded, you can check his stuff out on Spotify. The rap/vocals combination was a bit like N-Dubz, except really good and not embarrassing. Other bands such as Manchester-based dance darlings Egyptian Hip Hop and Wild Palms also put on a good show. The only hitch was trying to dance without spilling my cider.

There was also some pretty great shopping opportunities about; I spent a long time looking about the vintage clothing stalls with my boyfriend and friends. We picked up some great bargains. My friend picked up a vintage 1970s orange and gold jumpsuit (very Nicole Richie) for the meagre sum of seven quid, while I found a Missoni-style knitted tank top and oversized denim shirt for three pounds each. I would say Farm Festival was worth it for the vintage alone – unlike many shops in London, where you’d pay up to fifty or sixty pounds for one item, I couldn’t see anything priced over a tenner and the clothes were actually nice.

Similarly to the event’s creators, the festival-goers put an equal amount of love into their appearance – there were some dope hats in circulation this weekend. Hats were piled high with flowers, feathers, fruit and, in keeping with the farm theme, farm animals. My personal favourite was the woman we dubbed as “Sunflower Lady” (we didn’t realise she was actually meant to be a daffodil, but the nickname stuck), who donned a giant daffodil hat with a green dress. She was a beam of happiness on a quite grey Somerset weekend. Probably most notable for sheer effort were the family of dolphins at Gilcombe Farm – a group of fifteen-odd festivalers all tangled up in a giant blue fishing net together, each wearing their own dolphin hat/sculpture made out of tinfoil. They even walked like they were dolphins. The UK did us proud this weekend – all of Farm Fest, young and old, little and large, were turned out in headgear that Lady Gaga would be proud of.

Thanks for a good weekend, Farm Festival – I’ll see you next year.

Competition: Win two tickets to Farm Festival

By Elaine LaPersonerie on July 23rd, 2010

farm festival.jpgFor those of you who’ve been bitterly weeping into your unworn wellies this summer, cursing all your friends who’ve had the cash to swan off to all the biggest festivals such as Glastonbury, there’s still time for you to get a taste of festival life.

Farm Festival, the two-day event set in a farm -yes, a farm – in Bruton, Somerset, is an intimate event that will probably end up the most fun you’ve ever had in your life, ever. This year is going to be my first time (how poignant) but I’m friends of FF veterans who go every year and love it. The line-up is featuring such fun, danceable bands as Wild Palms, The Electric and Egyptian Hip Hop, whilst in the day time there’s going to be childish delights such as Punch and Judy, Arts and Crafts and face painting. Like a retro primary-school summer fete, but with cider and dancing.

I should also warn those interested in going now that there is a very important rule that must be adhered to, and that’s wearing a hat. Hats are compulsory, and the crazier the better – the best hat-wearers will be awarded prizes at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party on Sunday.

Sounds kind of cool, right? Tickets are a snip at £35 each (that’s with free camping, yay) and can be bought on WeGotTickets.com. However, if you’re a bit skint but still want to go, the lovely makers of Farmfestival have kindly donated two tickets for you and a friend to be won in an online raffle organised by Topman. All you have to do is click here and follow the simple instructions to enter.

For those of you that want to go, I’ll be there covering the festival for Shiny Style. So happy camping, and I’ll see you all next week.

Glastonbury festival: Sienna Miller, Kate Moss and Alexa Chung dance the weekend away

By Andrea Petrou on June 28th, 2010

While festival goers danced the weekend away at Glastonbury the stars we’re also out in force enjoying the bands and showing off their festival fashion. And it seems denim shorts were the trend of the day. Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, Emma Watson and Sienna Miller all went for these denim lovelies teaming them up with shirts, ankle boots, and in Sienna’s case an on-trend Trilby hat.

An off duty Kate Nash and Channel 4 presenter Jameela Jamil took the short trend that step further opting for high waisted versions of these. Kate teamed hers up with a loud top, while Jameela went for a sleek black top and sun hat.

On-stage Florence Welch opted for a white leotard with one shoulder detail before changing into a flowing boho style frock to enjoy the rest of the day, while Shakira went for her statement casual look, opting for jeans and a plain top for her stage performance.

Billie Piper was also spotted in a tribal style maxi dress, while Pixie opted for a short black number, which she teamed up with knee high socks.

Emma Watson and Pixie Geldof come out to play at Glastonbury and see our best dressed

By Andrea Petrou on June 25th, 2010

Emma Watson and Pixie Geldof joined Glasto Festival goers today and also gave them a run for their fashion style (although we would expect them to considering the amount of money they have).

Emma looked casually glam in denim shorts and a corset brocade top. She finished of the look with over the knee boots. Pixie on the other hand opted for tiny black hotpants, sneakers and to the knee black socks. She completed the look with a cardigan complete with a train.

But it wasn’t just the stars that looked good. Like yesterday, revellers showed off their looks, which included flip-flops, denim shorts and nautical stripes, while others went for wellies (of course) and boho style tunics. We’ll be bringing you all the Glasto news on Monday with galleries of the acts and of course the trends. And don’t forget to send us your Glastonbury fashion photos for inclusion in a gallery.

Trend alert: Top 5 festival must have accessories

By Andrea Petrou on June 25th, 2010

Glastonbury ticket holders who still had to go into work today will be counting to Friday evening, where many will get ready to head to the festival. However, like with any mini break there’s always those last minute bits that need buying.

This could be anything from dry shampoo or face wipes to bigger things such as a waterproof coat or a straw hat, which has already been making trend waves at this year’s festival (see our gallery here for Glasto pics).

And then there’s the all important bag to consider too. So we’ve decided to put together a last minute Glastonbury must-have accessory gallery for those still panicking about this or for those who are thinking in advance for their time at V Festival, Creamfields or the other hundreds of festivals that are going on this summer.

Glastonbury: The festival style so far.

By Andrea Petrou on June 24th, 2010

Although Glastonbury doesn’t properly kick off until tomorrow festival goers have already been turning up in their droves pitching up their tents and showcasing the latest festival fashions.

So far, it’s been pretty low key. Girls have opted for on-trend florals and flip-flops, while others have gone for denim shorts and of course the festival trend of wellington boots (if you still haven’t got yours then see our gallery here). Others have gone for leggings under long tees and there’s been an abundance of Trilby hats as the sun, for once, shines.

However, there’s always one that has to go a wacky step further and the prize today goes to the gentleman in the orange bikini, which hardly leaves anything to the imagination. We hope you’ve had your lunch girls.

View the gallery below for day one of Glasto festival fashion. But we also want to hear from you. Are you at the festival or heading down for the weekend? If so we want your help. Take a picture of your festival attire and send it over to us at Andrea@shinymedia.com. The best dressed will get a mention and their picture on the site next week.

Festival style: what to wear to the best-dressed fests around

By laurenbravo on April 25th, 2010

wenn2575502.jpg
Festival season is upon us again, and there’s a whole new wardrobe to be assembled before we descend on the fields. Here’s our ShinyStyle guide to the most fashionable fests around…

Secret Garden Party – Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire

Best for:
Tea drinkers who still like to party.

The lowdown: If there’s one thing guaranteed to make your cooler-than-thou festival/party/event one iota cooler, it’s putting ‘secret’ in front of its name. The not-for-profit festival is a bubbly melting pot of creativity, with kids running amok and a fun, electro-tinged musical line-up. This year’s theme is ‘Fact or Fiction’, which apparently translates as an exploration of mythology, fantasy and illusion. Don’t expect it to be much like its Frances Hodgson Burnett namesake, but it does all take place in a gorgeous landscaped garden with a lake and an enchanted forest. Meet you by the big toadstool.

The look: Fantastical hippie heaven. Go for lurid colours, natty accessories and a healthy dose of fictional fun. This floral number from Urban Outfitters ought to do the job.

Spotted: Acts this year will include the very gorgeous Eliza Doolittle and Marina and the Diamonds – definitely ones to watch for style tips.

Bestival - The Isle of Wight (Above left)

Best for: Fancy dress fans.

The lowdown:
The last shindig of the season, The September event takes festival dressing to another level with its annual, all-encompassing themes. Last year it was Space, this year it’s Fairy Tale, so expect frogs, princes and petticoats ahoy. And if you get bored dousing the mud out of your rented Repunzel wig, there’s always the music – this year’s lineup includes Roxy Music and Soft Cell’s Marc Almond, the perfect excuse to work some New Romantic flounces into your costume.

The look: This is no time to play the “I came as myself” card. Go fantastical, but avoid those awful slutty off-the-peg costumes by compiling your own. Check out Beyond Retro for enormous net underskirts to give that Snow White skirt some swoosh.

Spotted: Lily Allen, VV Brown, various others you might not recognise behind the disguises.

Exit – Serbia

Best for: the music, man.

The lowdown: Founded in 2000 by a group of students, Exit grew like wildfire throughout the noughties and in 2007 was named Best European Festival. Attracting a mishmash crowd of indie kids, drum and bass fans and ravers, the mood is laidback and the aesthetic more so.

The look: Think Shoreditch pub, transported to the banks of the Danube. Kick back in denim, checked shirts (pick your plaid at American Apparel) and slouchy jersey separates, and add a neon bra for impromptu rave stripping.

Spotted: It’s not a celeb haven yet, and all the better for it. This year’s lineup includes Chemical Brothers, Crystal Castles and Royksopp – less about the outfits, more about the block rockin’ beats.

Daisy+Lowe+Will+Cameron+Coachella+GjsY97vcg9pl.jpgCoachella – California

Best for: Shiny, happy people

The lowdown: The Californian desert fest has become big news in the last few years, attracting hundreds of thousands of sunseekers, hip kids and glitterati. This year’s event, which took place last weekend, saw performances from Jay-Z, Vampire Weekend and La Roux, and was just as star-studded offstage as on.

The look: High-end hippie, with plenty of flowing fabric, gladiator sandals and artfully mussed up hair. Katy Perry rocked a Native American-inspired get-up, while Alexa Chung and Agyness Deyn gave a lesson in effortless festival finery with their cotton dresses, playsuits and shirts. Try this little number from Boohoo on for size.

Spotted: Kelly Osbourne, Daisy Lowe, Alexa Chung, Agyness Deyn, Pixie Geldof. The usual suspects.

Latitude – Suffolk

Best for: culture vultures

The lowdown: A festival that’s as much about the other attractions as it is about the music, Latitude is packed with comedy, theatre, dance, literary events and other artsy diversions, and attracts a crowd of creatives, yummy mummies and wannabe woodland elves.

The look: Grown-up and dressed down, with a bohemian intellectual vibe (or as much of one as you can manage with a portaloo for a salon). Time to whip out the maxi dress, stick a flower behind your ear and chat to someone with a beard about Balzac. Head to Whistles for this gorgeous paint-effect dress, and team it with Hunter wellies.

Spotted: Regina Spektor, Paloma Faith, Vivienne Westwood.

wenn5316839.jpgGlastonbury – Somerset

Best for: Getting down and dirty

The lowdown:
It’s the Big Daddy of them all – five days of frolicking in fields, anthemic music and mud. With something for everyone and their aunt, Glasto has earned its crown as the king of festivals.

The look: Pretty much anything goes, but Kate Moss cemented the official uniform with her hotpants-vest-wellies-and-waistcoat ensemble. This year, the shorts still stand but they want to be teamed with a statement top, like this military-inspired vest from New Look, and topped off with a parka to brace the evening chill.

Spotted: Pixie Lott, Florence Welch, Alexa Chung, Daisy Lowe… well, y’know, everyone.
