New video from the Christian Dior Haute Couture show

By Andrea Thatcher on July 2nd, 2008

Catwalk Queen has rummaged up some footage from the Christian Dior Haute Couture show earlier this week. It’s enough to make even the most unlikely fashion follower weak at the knees, with flashes of the ’40s/’50s inspired by the world’s first supermodel, Lisa Fonssagrives. Even if you’ve already clicked through the collection, it’s worth watching this video to see the beautiful movement of the pieces.

Fall 2008 Couture: Chanel

By Andrea Thatcher on July 1st, 2008

Chanel runway copy.jpgClick image to enlarge.

Karl Lagerfeld left off the stunt stage design this season.
A relatively austere backdrop of large silver columns set the scene for the models, sporting Wintouresque bobs, to march around.

All the more attention for the clothes, which were beautiful. Less adventurous than some past Chanel shows, at first the designs were simple, delightful Chanel workhorse suits and jackets. But then came the fabulous details like feathers, beads, metalics and architectural shapes.

Fall 2008 Couture: Christian Dior

By Andrea Thatcher on July 1st, 2008

Dior ballgowns.jpgClick image to enlarge.

While Jean Paul Galliano’s confections for Christian Dior Couture are always going to signify fantasy to millions of women, his Fall 2008 Couture collection was actually a bit more grounded in reality than usual. Sure there were sheer skirts and exaggerated corsetted waists and the usually bouffant ballgowns, seen above, but for the most part the collection was sophisticated and wearable. (You know, if you have a lifestyle conducive to Couture.) Maybe it’s because one inspriation was the French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, quickly becoming the first lady of fashion as well.

Fall 2008 Couture: C’lebs and fashion elite at Christian Dior

By Andrea Thatcher on July 1st, 2008

Dior haute couture.jpg Click image to enlarge.

Anna Wintour and Claudia Schiffer were on hand for the Christian Dior fall 2008 couture show at the start of Couture Fashion Week in Paris. Wintour wore a green and white print dress she recently also wore to a few menswear shows in Milan in June. Perhaps this repeat dressing is a reflection of the poor economic climate? Or perhaps it’s just a bad time to be flaunting ridiculous wealth from a PR standpoint. Schiffer wore a simple but elegant gray wrap around dress.

Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2008: Jean Paul Gaultier

By Andrea Thatcher on January 25th, 2008

Fashionistas were positively drowning in Jean Paul Gaultier at his Paris Spring/Summer haute couture show in Paris Wednesday, and they didn’t care to come up for air. The water-sea theme so popular among designers was taken more literally than usual with dripping wet models, scale-like dresses, shells and sea prints floating down the runway. The collection started with a run of slouchy suits, running with the oversized men’s jacket look we’ve seen on stars like Keira Knightley lately. Then a bohemian shell-print dress switched gears into a more bohemian, floaty segment which was our favorite. Keep reading for more pictures, including some luxe handbags from the runway.

Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2008: Givenchy

By Andrea Thatcher on January 24th, 2008

Givenchy%20collage.jpg (Click image to enlarge.)

Inspired by Degas’ La Petite Danseuse de 14 Ans, Riccardo Tisci sought to combine elements of hard and soft in his spring/summer 2008 Haute Couture collection. There seemed to be an ideal mix – some looks that were clearly more structured and linear, some that were more romantic, and some that combined elements of both. The pants were skinny and the skirts were skate, with an understated sophistication we love to see from a venerable house like Givenchy. More images after the jump.

Valentino’s farewell wishers

By Andrea Thatcher on January 24th, 2008

Valentino%20collage.jpg

The fashion world showed up en force ot bid farewell to Valentino yesterday. Catwalk Queen has reported on what was on the runway, and now we’re telling you what – or who – was in the front row.

Gossip Girl star Blake Lively was experiencing her first haute couture shows this week, and what an experience this one must have been for a novice. We think Blake looks lovely and surprisingly young in this. Of course she is young, but her look usually has such an edge to it, going for the hipster, world-weary vibe of her character Serena, this dress looks so innocent and fresh on her. We like it.

Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2008: Christian Lacroix

By Andrea Thatcher on January 23rd, 2008

Lacroix%20collage%201.jpg (Click image to enlarge.)

The Christian Lacroix haute couture presentation in Paris yesterday was a study in mixing. Mixing patterns, mixing colors, mixing fabrics, mixing silhouettes – and mixing a drink to bring yourself down from the over-stimulation. Couture isn’t meant to be wearable, it’s true, but we did find the pieces grounded a bit more in reality, like the black ensemble and maroon gown above, the most beautiful. If you click through the jump, you’ll see examples of the more outlandish looks referred to – a sort of mish-mash of Lacroix staples like the gypsy and 18th century woman.

Glitterati at Chanel Haute Couture show

By Andrea Thatcher on January 23rd, 2008

Chanel%20celebs.jpg

The stylishly sophisticated decended apon the Chanel Haute Couture show in Paris on Tuesday. Above we have Clemence Poesy (yes, that’s Fleur from the Harry Potter films) looking a bit confused, or perhaps just French. The use of color is great, remember this if you want to incorporate spring brights into your wardrobe early. Sophia Coppola wore a brown fur topper over an all-black ensemble, looking particularly weather appropriate for a celebrity. Natalia Vodianova and Justin Portman are looking a bit windblown; we’re glad to see Natalia wearing a chic coat, but her legs must be freezing. And finally Claudia Schiffer – after all these years we still love her hair more than anything.

Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2008: Giorgio Armani Prive

By Andrea Thatcher on January 22nd, 2008

Armani%20collage%201.jpg (Click image to enlarge.)

Beautiful tailoring came in carefully molded suits and elegantly draped evening gowns at the Giorgio Armani Prive haute couture show on Monday. The gowns really stole the show with beautiful lines, fan pleating, and subtle details we’re just itching to see on the red carpet. The dresses were traditionally romantic and feminine, while the suiting acheived the same affect in a more modern way. Jackets were molded onto the body and skirts expanded on the volume we saw at Dior in a more subtle, geometric way.

Many more pictures after the jump.

Oscar nominations revealed, but will the couture headed to L.A. actually be worn?

By Andrea Thatcher on January 22nd, 2008

Oscar%20nominations.jpg

The Oscar nominations are out, and as for fashionistas it seems to be a case of the sophisticate and the ingenue – with Keira Knightley somewhere in the middle.

Cate Blanchett is nominated for best actress in a leading role for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and also for best actress in a supporting role for I’m Not There. This is Blanchett’s fourth nomination, and she won once before in 2005 for her supporting role in The Aviator - as seen above.

Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2008: Christian Dior

By Andrea Thatcher on January 21st, 2008

Dior%20collage%201.jpg (Click image to enlarge.)

John Galliano’s spring haute couture collection for Christian Dior spoke volumes. Volume in taffeta and satin bunched, swagged, bustled and draped. And volume in bright, saturated, pastel and jewel-tone colors.

The collection was full of drama with oversized toppers that resembled objets d’art more than hats, painterly prints, paillettes and embroidery. Gone was the delicacy and old-fashioned femininity of Galliano’s fall collection. Instead of exaggerated waists, caricatures of silhouettes gone by, proportions were blown out in the opposite direction, ballooning away from the body with a structure belying the craftsmanship of the collection.
