Jennifer Hudson is glad her weight loss has inspired so many of her fans

By Andrea Petrou on March 10th, 2011

Jennifer Hudson is glad her weight loss has inspired so many of her fans.

The singer-and-actress has shed over 80lbs and claims she had no idea how many people had taken notice of her changing shape.

She told Essence magazine: “I didn’t realise that so many people were watching me or that so many people were interested. Now people come up to me saying, ‘You’ve inspired me’ and I’m like, ‘Wow’. ”

The 29-year-old star – who became the face of Weight Watchers in 2010 – has previously admitted she often “forgets” she has lost so much weight.

She said “I go into the store and they try to put me in 4s and 6s and I’m like, ‘Who are you trying to talk to?’ My mind hasn’t caught up yet.”

Jennifer – who has a 19-month-old son David with fiance David Otunga – also admitted she didn’t expect to shed as much weight as she did.

She said: “I didn’t expect to go as far as I did. People are like, ‘OK Jennifer don’t lose anything else!’ ”

However, the ‘Dreamgirls’ beauty insists she is always happy with herself, regardless of her size.

She added: “I’ve always been a person who’s comfortable with myself whether it’s plus-size, small size it doesn’t matter.”

Elle Macpherson’s been putting her foot in it

By emilyborrett on July 8th, 2010

Australian super-beauty Elle Macpherson upset animal rights activists worldwide by revealing, in an interview conducted via Twitter, that she uses a banned Chinese beauty supplement made out of powdered rhino’s horn. This clumsy confession left animal protection charities and organisations gobsmacked – Nicola Beynon of the Humane Society International condemned her behavior, describing Elle’s use of the medicine as “reprehensible”.

Elle has since made a public statement of apology, saying that she has “never knowingly consumed or encouraged the consumption of any products which contain material derived from endangered species”. Time will tell if she can win over those that she’s offended, but it looks like she’s in the dog house for now.

Maybe ditch the rhino horns and stick to more traditional beauty methods from now Elle, i.e. Boots moisturiser and toothpaste on your spots. You’ll be forgiven – you’ll just have to make this years Britain Next Top Model really good.

Gallery: Pale and proud celebrities

By Andrea Petrou on January 14th, 2010

When we first reported on the sunbed ban bill, we bought you a gallery of super tanned celebrities to show you how ridiculous many look when they over do it on radiation machines.

Therefore, with the news that pale Nicola Roberts is supporting the campaign we thought it only right to give you a gallery of pale celebs, who clearly show you don’t need a tan to be beautiful.

Nicola Roberts backs proposed underage sunbed ban

By Andrea Petrou on January 14th, 2010

Nicola.jpg
Last year we told you about a proposed private members bill, which would ban under 18s in England and Wales from using sunbeds, and we’re pleased to see we’re not the only ones backing the cause.

Last night Girl’s Aloud member Nicola Roberts also put her weight behind the campaign being proposed by Cardiff North’s MP Julie Morgan.

Speaking about her personal experiences the pale red head admitting had felt pressured to have a tan when she was a youngster.

“I was once in a place where I did feel a pressure to have a tan – having a tan made me feel more attractive, it made me feel more accepted and as a young girl being very influenced by peers, by media, by everybody in society, that was just the way I felt… without having a tan I didn’t feel attractive, I just didn’t feel very good at all,” she said.

It is thought that 6 per cent of 11- to 17-year-olds in England have used sunbeds – usually coin-operated, unsupervised, and charging as little as 30p per minute. This figurerises to 20 per cent in Liverpool.

Kings Road Sporting Club launches Yummie Tummie shapewear range

By Andrea Petrou on January 5th, 2010

Yummy.jpgIt was only yesterday that we were talking about how good shapewear is for hiding those post Christmas bumps and therefore thought it only fair that we told you about these new pieces from Kings Road Sporting Club.

The Yummie Tummie collection are said to shave 5lbs of your figure through a unique fat squeezing technology and are claimed to get rid of “that muffin top.”

There is a choice of different options including shorts, which can be worn on their own at the gym, a thong, and a range of strappy tops. We particularly like the leopard print one, which gives a nod to this season’s animal print.

If you’re feeling daring we think its perfect teamed up with a pair of jeans or leggings on a night out. Slimming and fashionable, what more could a girl want?

Marks and Spencer launches Bridget Jones style slimming pants for men

By Andrea Petrou on January 4th, 2010

Man.jpgAfter 10 days off full on Christmas festivities many of us will use this month to get back into shape.

However, while many girls will today sign up to the gym, vow not to drink alcohol for the rest of January or just hide away the post Christmas Quality Street tins, men’s slimming options just got easier.

Marks and Spencer has just launched a male version of the Bridget Jones style slimming knickers, or should we say pants, to help our boys battle their festive bulge.

The Bodymax collection, which also features slimming vests is said to flatten the torso, creating the illusion of a waistline 1.5 inches slimmer.

Dave Binns, head of buying for men’s underwear, told the Daily Mail: “Men are becoming more conscious of their appearance. Our Bodymax range has been designed in response to this, giving men a quick fix solution for those lumps and bumps in the same way that shapewear does for women.”

Prices start from £12, and will hit stores on 7 January.

MP calls for under 18s to be banned from using sunbeds

By Andrea Petrou on December 18th, 2009

sunbeds.jpg We’ve been fake bake rather than tanning booths ever since we were old enough to understand the risks associated with sunbeds.

We’ve also heard some horrible stories about young girls being burnt in a bid to look like their favourite sun roasted celeb. One example includes a 14 year old girl who received 70% burns in an unsupervised salon in Barry in February.

And of course there is the risk of cancer.

So we’re really pleased to hear that someone is actually doing something about this. According to the BBC, Cardiff North MP Julie Morgan has put down a Private Member’s Bill calling for all under 18s in Wales and England to be banned from using sunbeds. She’s also calling for sunbed use to be supervised.

The bill follows research last month, which found 250,000 11-to-17-year-olds in England were risking skin cancer by using sunbeds. A quarter of under-18s who used sunbeds also did so at least once a month.

A new law preventing under-18s from using has already come into force in Scotland recently and we really hope, we can follow suit.

And it looks like we may not have to keep our fingers crossed for too long. Julie Morgan told the BBC: “There’s a huge amount of support for it – we just need bit of luck and goodwill.”

Public Health Minister Gillian Merron also said the UK government “fully supports” Ms Morgan’s proposals and Cancer Research UK is also behind the campaign.

We don’t mean to get all preachy on you, but until then, we advise all of you to stick to the bottled tan. You’ll thank us in the long run.

Let us know about your sunbed use and what you think of these tanning machines by leaving your comments below.

My Detox Diary days 3 and 4: Purifyne 7 day cleansing programme

By Andrea Petrou on December 8th, 2009

Last night I dreamed about cheese smothered on crackers, melted on a jacket potato and huge chunks just calling to be eaten. I dreamed about kebabs, hot dogs and my favourite Chinese take away dish, which I ate until my hearts content and I was, understandably, in heaven.

If you’ve seen the National Lampoons European Vacation you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

However, waking up in the middle of the night and feeling nauseous from hunger I quickly remembered where I was and what I was doing this week.

Welcome to day three and four of my Detox diary.

After a bad nights sleep, which I usually only (ironically) have when I’ve had a big dinner the evening before, I expected to feel lethargic and wanting to crawl back into bed.

However, I’m extremely awake and had more than enough motivation to to do some very rare exercise. Admittedly it was only a run around the block at 7 this morning, but my body is definitely waking up to the idea, whereas reviously I would have just wanted to go back to bed after dropping my other half off at the station. I’m also raring to go swimming, which would have been impossible to think of even a week ago.

Having more energy is one of the benefits of the Purifyne programme, as are many other benefits, which I didn’t know a detox helped with. In fact there are many surprising ways in which cleansing can help you feel better.

This includes having stronger nails and shinier hair, which need a steady supply of nutrients to grow and remain strong. If your bloodstream contains toxins, they can make your hair dull and nails soft. By doing a juice cleanse you ensure that the toxins are removed from your bloodstream and that your hair and nails receive the right nutrients much easier.

A good cleanse will also restore your internal systems to health and replace any greyness or redness in your eyes with a sparkling white, and perhaps even lighten up the colour of your iris.

But have I seen any of these benefits yet?

Well my nails are definitely whiter and my hair is easier to manage, which is a miracle in itself. However, I don’t know whether its the lack of sleep but my eyes are looking more bloodshot than usual. My skin is still also quite spotty, and now I have some spots under my chin, which apparently shows that the detox is working.

Yesterday, as I hoped, was not as bad as Sunday and I didn’t get hungry until the afternoon, but during that time, my now flat stomach felt empty, so much so that even the cat food looked appealing.

After speaking to the owner of the company, I was also touched to get some positive texts from her telling me I was doing very well, which was encouragement in itself to continue.

Although I went to bed with a content tummy, the hunger obviously kicked in during the night. Funnily enough I’m also not hungry and what is more I’m not craving anything else but juice.

So has it been worth it so far? Well my energy level has definitely increased, and I’m back in my size 6 jeans, which have remained tucked away in the cupboard for the duration of my gym neglect.

At the same time I think its a good idea to start the programme at the weekend so you have a few days off to ease you into the process, especially if you’re vain and like a drink as much as I do.

I do have a feeling, that by this time next week, I’ll be glowing, slimmer and with hair that doesn’t resemble ex X Factor contestant’s Jamie Afro.

Read on tomorrow to see how I faired today and for more benefits of the programme.
