High Street Fashion Week has gone off with a big, sparkly, ticker-tape rainbow bang as the beginning of the week’s celebration of fashion’s best high street stores was ushered in with circus performers and models scaling the sides of buildings in the latest fashions. We’d never thought that abseiling and stilettos would ever go hand-in-hand but hey, we love to be surprised.

High Street Fashion Week, which honours our much-beloved British high street in a week-long slew of fashion parties, meet and greets and sales, takes place in the shopping mecca which is Oxford Circus and will continue until Friday.

Today kicks off with an absolute monster sale in the Debenhams department store with 25% off in ALL THE DEPARTMENTS. AND IT’LL LAST ALL WEEK. There’s also a 10% discount at the Oxford Circus Benetton store when you spend £50 – it’s time to max out your store card, girls. Meanwhile, fashion sightseers should head on over to the John Lewis where they’re housing Osman Yousefzada’s latest collection.

One of the other good things about the High Street Fashion Week is their sensational giveaway prizes and competitions, which will be going on all week. What girl doesn’t fantasize about buying a little bit of everything in Barney’s? That’s the theme of the store’s fall catalog, created by Simon Doonan and starring Coco Rocha.

Rocha is photographed as the character Emma, and Emma has a dilemma.

“Making decisions has never been my strong point. When faced with a chocolate eclair or a macaroon, I dither and procrastinate and end up nibbling on both” says Emma.

“The theme is, ‘Oh just buy both.’ Embedded in there is permission to be a little self-indulgent. It’s a bit of glamorous self-indulgence” said Doonan.

“Our goal is to make mailers with iconic, evocative imagery while being inspired by individual style and contemporary culture,” art director Lina Kutsovskaya told WWD.

Doonan laments ads where there’s “just a logo and a girl looking stunned and staring into the middle distance. People are starved of stories when they look at fashion advertising. We try to be interesting and keep it cheeky. It’s what gives us an edge at Barneys.”

Gwyneth Paltrow is lending her name to support Saks Fifth Avenue’s 2008 Key for a Cure campaign. The actress models a T-shirt designed by Karl Lagerfeld, which features a sketch of the man himself, in advertising for the charity. The T-shirt will retail for $40 (at least $35 going to charity) to support the cancer awareness initiative, which has previously been backed by Hilary Swank, Charlize Theron, and Renee Zellweger. The T-shirts will hit the Saks website in October.

“We’re seeing some classic red, white and blue, and navy/whites for Resort markets,” Bergdorf’s Linda Fargo told Fashion Week Daily. “The ‘star’ as a graphic feels right too–both Chanel and YSL played with it within the last year. Stella McCartney played with American 1940′s style cherries as shoe ornamentation at her charming picnic presentation a couple of weeks ago. Perhaps it’s because it’s an election year, combined with an upcoming July 4th, as well as the cylce of fashion–which periodically dips back into this classic American color combination.”

Created by costume designer, Catherine Martin, the dress, which is also worn by Kidman in her forthcoming flick Australia, is currently on display in the department store’s window, just a week after appearing in the style bible.

Four recreations of the firebird organza gown are available for sale at US$9,850 a piece. A red version is worn by the actress during the scene at the governor’s ball, marking the first time that Martin has sold her creations at a retail level.

“Film has such a growing impact on fashion and style inspiration,” said Linda Fargo, Bergdorf senior vice president. “But it’s not often that one can literally buy what you see a style icon like Nicole Kidman wearing in a movie.”

Well except for Salvatore Ferragamo, who kitted Kidman out in full accessories for the film. He will now feature a version of the strappy velvet shoes, as seen in the movie, in his holiday collection.

I am sensing a trend… think 1940s, think wartime, think outback Australia – easy done!

The “Shopaholic” movie has been filming at Henri Bendel several times this month, and star Isla Fisher hasn’t been immune to her character’s obsession – shopping!

“We’re one of her favorite stores,” a Bendel’s spokeswoman told WWD. “[Isla's] character shops at Bendel’s often, being that she’s a shopaholic.”

Isla herself purchased a mix of clothing an accessories between takes in the store which was closed for filming.

The Shopaholic movie is based on the books by the same name by Sophie Kinsella.
