Slimming down with the Teri Jon belted taffeta shirtdress

By Andrea Thatcher on September 7th, 2007

TeriJonDress.jpg
Since vertical lines and form-fitting silhouettes are a top trend this season, nothing aids a post-summer slimdown better than a belted black dress. This Teri Jon belted taffeta shirtdress offers a sleek and chic touch for those curves, pulling you together with a V-neck bodice and striking winged collar, set atop a full flowing skirt. The belt itself is studded with glittery rhinestones for an added touch of glamour. Three-quarter slit-sleeves make this a great pick for fall/winter occasions, and with your hair styled up or down, it’s sure to make you the belle of the ball.

Patent leather trench coats from the runway to your wardrobe

By Andrea Thatcher on September 6th, 2007

Fall%2007_trench%20coats_edited.JPG

The trench coat is the perfect item to take you from summer into fall. It’s lightweight enough that it doesn’t overheat, offers protection from scattered rain showers, and the new patent leather designs also double as a sleek dress or even perfect-weather coats for night. The two beautiful ones from Elie Tahari and Aquascutum (above) are a bit pricey, so try this belted slicker, third from the left, from Calvin Klein (on sale for US$196).

Chie Mihara brings back your youth

By Andrea Thatcher on September 5th, 2007

mary%20janes.jpg
These suede Mary Jane pumps by Chie Mihara with Velcro strap are a fabulous shade of blue for fall that just scream school-girl chic. Perfect to be paired with skinny jeans and a slinky top, they’re also appropriate for the office when paired with a knee-length skirt and cardigan. I just adore this shade of peacock blue and it really does match anything from black to grey to pink to red. The heel also provides more comfort than most heels do and the oversized Velcro strap adds a touch of youth that I just love.

Ashley Olsen Dresses for Labor Day

By Elaine LaPersonerie on September 4th, 2007

200_collage%2520%282%29.jpg
I’m spending time in the Hamptons–enjoying the last few bits of summer sun. Last night, I went for dinner at Sen Lounge, a swanky sushi restaurant in Sag Harbor and who walks in and sits right next to me? Ashley Olsen. I’m not star crazed at all–after having worked with one, you’ve worked with them all, pretty much. But there has been so much buzz lately about the Olsen twins and how they dress. Where one achieves, the other fails. I must say, despite all the controversy over the twin fashion misses, she looked adorable! Her outfit fit the bill for an end-of-summer night that still felt beachy, but breezy. She was wearing a simple black mini tank dress like this American Apparel one, a pair of black and gold flats as seen now at Urban Outfitters and a long sweater like this one Gap is showing for fall. So, when your caught between summer and fall–think of Ashley Olsen and this 1-2-3 combo!

Cuff ‘em! Dazzling ways to dress up your wrist

By Elaine LaPersonerie on August 30th, 2007

collagecuff.jpg

This season we are seeing a ton of glitz—sequins, silver, fur, feathers and bodies adorned with heavy embellishments and hardware. These fabulous cuffs from Hayden Hartnett, Kitson and Intuition will help accessorize any outfit, and get you through those days that you just don’t feel like getting dressed. Although generally worn on your wrist, I sometimes rock them out on my upper forearm with a pair of high leather boots, jeans and a rocker tee. Now, if I only played the guitar, we’d be in business.

A Head’s Up on Hats: What’s Hot, What’s Not

By Elaine LaPersonerie on August 29th, 2007

Still%20Life_hat_edited.jpg

Hats really take things to the next level. They are fun, trendy and super sexy—but only when done the right way. So, leave the trucker hat in the back of your Ford pick-up and your cowboy hat home on the range (I know you’re much more sophisticated than that anyway). This season, go for classics like the fedora, pork pie, trilby or derby—styles sure to keep you lookin’ mighty fine. Personally, I’m in love with this midnight blue panama fedora adorned with a navy/white stitch bow trim from Still Life. It’s chic but makes a strong statement and will easily compliment something dressy or casual. Check out more from Still Life or pop into one of the retail locations listed on their site. Maybe you’ll even end up rockin’ the same hat as one of their celebrity clients—Joel Madden, Nicole Richie or Fall Out Boy.

Sexy Fall Coat—Burberry Satin Trench

By Andrea Thatcher on August 28th, 2007

Burberry_satin_trench_edited.jpg
One of the only ways to cope with the end of summer is to shop for new fall digs. I found this Burberry fuschia satin trench, and absolutely fell in love! Fashioned with 3/4-length sleeves and a dark, sensual color, it’s perfect for to and from work, and cool fall nights out on the town. The double-breasted button front lends a chic, nautical-like design with a scoop-neck collar to show off a glam choker. Use it as a coat to cover up a slightly skimpy ensemble, or wear it as a dress with leggings for sleek style. Now all we need is hot, new stiletto black boots to complete the look. But beware, if you want this coat, you’ll have to wait a bit—it won’t be available for shipping until October.

Call of the Wild—Kenneth Jay Lane Gold Panther Necklace

By Andrea Thatcher on August 28th, 2007

KennethJayLane%20cat%20necklace.jpg

This Kenneth Jay Lane Gold Panther necklace is almost identical to a pin that I had as a child that my mother bought me at her favorite thrift shop. A perfect conversation piece, this long necklace is dying to be paired with a simple black dress or top and, as everyone knows, leopard is always in style.

Rubber Rainboots AKA Life Savers—Wellington, Target, Marc Jacobs, J.Crew

By Elaine LaPersonerie on August 28th, 2007

collagepile_edited2.JPG

When the rubber rainboot trend first hit the streets, I was a bit skeptical. Mostly because a lot of stores were carrying styles that put me back to grade school. Clouds, rainbows, and pink boots with a kitty-cat face at the toes—I could go on and on. Eventually though, I got sick of dodging puddles in heels, (not to mention I ruined some serious shoes) so, I bought a pair of Marc Jacob All Weather Boots. They were rubber, olive green, up to my knees and Lord have mercy they saved my life! No more drenched jeans, wet feet or ruining great shoes. It really made sense why people loved rubber boots. Coincidently, the NY Times did a little slide show this week of New Yorkers battling recent rainy weather. And guess what the focus was? Rainboots!

The word “jacket” probably sends goose bumps down your spine, but fall IS just around the corner! So, unfortunately you have to start thinking about this season’s wardrobe. How to Wear: sequins for day with this Nanette Lepore cardigan

By Andrea Thatcher on August 23rd, 2007

Nanette%20cardigan.jpg

If you can’t get enough sequins and sparkle at night, maybe it’s time to take your obsession into day – even (gasp) the office! This Nanette Lepore gray cardigan , $275, hits just the right line in an understated, slouchy shape and the undisputed color of the season. Plus, pairing the glittery embellishments with the understated shade kind of helps balance out the look and keep it on the sophisticated side. For day, try it with a tweed dress or a professional-grade top and skirt, then pair it with something sleek and black and belt it for night. This is definitely one of those items that look as if you just threw them on and give you that effortless-looking style.

How to Wear: Fall’s Cuffed Boots

By Andrea Thatcher on July 31st, 2007

cuffed%20boot%20on%20model.jpg

Thoughts of fall footwear inevitably turn to boots. If you’re still a little reticent to try the trendy short booties continueing to saturate the stores, a tall cuffed boot is a much safer, but still stylish, option. Cuffed boots go great with almost any length skirt, but are probably most flattering when an inch or two of skin (or hosiery) shows between the top of the boot and the bottom of your skirt, as shown on Danijela Dimitrovska on the Sophia Kokosalaki runway above.

Shoshanna shift dress takes summer style into fall

By Andrea Thatcher on July 31st, 2007

Shoshanna_shift%20dress_7.30.07_edited.jpg

It’s not officially fall, yet, so keep those strappy heels handy—you still have time to get some good wear out of this gorgeous Shoshanna silk shift dress. A welcome light fabric and breezy, non-clingy design for those last remaining hot summer days, shift dresses can also be worn into fall by adding a cardigan, a funky pair of tights, and knee-high boots, which would look incredibly hot with this dress. The black & white print is perfect for summer and fall, and I just love the gathered button neckline. Plus, it’s comfy and easy for any woman to wear. It’s a chic look that can be worn to the office, a nice dinner, and struttin’ your stuff at the club. Shift dresses in all styles and patterns were spotted across the fall fashion scene, featured in runway collections by Prada, Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton, and other top designers. Get in on the trend—find this beau for $319.

Taffeta Trench—THE Fall Dress

By Andrea Thatcher on July 24th, 2007

Taffeta%20Trench%20Dress_edited.jpg

This truly is the year of the dress! And oh-how-excited I am that the trend is continuing into fall. One of my favorites is this taffeta trench dress from OC by Oleg. Accented with puff sleeves, exaggerated split-lapel collar, and belt, this irridescent beauty is just asking to be the center of a picturesque scene in the park with a gentle breeze ruffling your hair and brightly speckled leaves swirling around you. Ok, so maybe I’m fantasizing about cooler days while cooped up in my new, un-airconditioned NYC apartment… But the dress is great for both work and dinner & drinks. Wear it with killer brown or even black power pumps to complete the look. The color is so rich and shimmering, that it’s perfectly fine to pair brown with black shoes (just this once). If you, too, crave this fab trench dress, it’s available for only $128.
