Scissor cuff from Toy Me

By Andrea Thatcher on January 4th, 2008

scissor%20cuff.jpg

Once, in the parking lot of a Dairy Queen while on a mission trip with the Tennessee Outreach Project, I created a cuff out of two run-of-the-mill forks and fell in love with it. The cool thing, I felt, was that you could create completely different pieces by using completely different forks.

Well, this scissor cuff from Toy Me kind of reminds me of that experiment. Check out the images over at NOTCOT.com where we discovered the piece to see how it actually opens, as well.

There’s definitely something a little bit edgy about wearing a cutting tool on your wrist. Dreamed up by Paris designer Thomas Jaillot and Marco De Michelis, the cuff is part of an upcoming Toy Me collection to be presented next week.

Subversive Jewelry had a great 2007, is set for 2008

By Andrea Thatcher on January 2nd, 2008

Subversive%20Jewelry%20necklace.jpg

After being named a CFDA/Vogue fashion fund top ten finalist but missing the top prize, Subversive Jewelry has finally broken through as a winner in the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation awards. Not only did Justin Giunta’s jewelry earn the label a slot among the seven winners, the designs earned it the title of the first ever accessories winner in the Ecco Domani competition. Designers win $25,000 toward the presentation of their collections at New York Fashion Week, so we’re not sure where Subversive Jewelry will get to spend its prize. But we hope it goes towards more designs like this double strand pearl necklace, $560.

10 Outfits for 10 Occasions: Kelsey’s anniversary outfit

By Andrea Thatcher on December 31st, 2007

Kelsey%20outfit.jpg

Reader Kelsey wrote in to ask for advice on an outfit for her 3-year anniversary that would compliment her size-12 figure. We chose a silver satin Chloe and Reese dress with some accessories that pop. The dress’s high waistline, wide neckline, demure yet sexy length, and wide straps that allow for a bra will all do Kelsey justice. Along with the silver dress we chose BCBGirls rhinestone slingbacks because many of us already have a similar pair in our closet, and if you don’t, at $66, these will be a workhorse for your dressy wardrobe. Read on for more info on the rest of the dazzling accessories.

Cole Haan gets in on collaboration trend, first up Bing Bang Jewelry

By Andrea Thatcher on December 20th, 2007

Cole%20Haan%20Bing%20Bang.jpg

Cole Haan is planning to celebrate its 80th anniversary with a seasonal collaborative series in 2008. They plan to work with designers from the fields of sculpture, architecture, industrial design, and jewelry – which is first up with Bing Bang designer Anna Sheffield. Bing Bang recently did a line of jewelry with Marc Jacobs, so will certainly bring some high-fashion cred to Cole Haan. Sheffield will be creating decorative jewelry accents, clasps, and closures for Cole Haan handbags and jewelry. This is a particularly interesting collaboration since Cole Haan’s accessories aren’t really known for a lot of embellishment or fancy hardware. We can’t wait to see what they come up with.

Kelly Killoren Bensimon: model, author, and jewelry designer

By Andrea Thatcher on December 18th, 2007

Kelly%20Bensimon.jpg

Kelly Killoren Bensimon plans to expand her Kelly for Kelly Killoren Bensimon jewelry line, currently sold exclusively at Bloomingdale’s, in the new year. The line based on vintage designs should soon be available at Scoop NYC, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Lord & Taylor. We wonder if the current price points, $80 to $280, will start to climb as the line becomes integrated into the more luxe retailer’s selections. At left, see an owl necklace from the line sported by Bensimon at New York Fashion Week.

You have until noon Friday for Christmas delivery and free 2-day expedited shipping at CoutureCandy. You also get free gift wrapping and a free seasonal CD.

While it’s not free, RedEnvelope will upgrade your shipping to 2-business days for the price of regular ground shipping on orders over $50. The offer is good with the code ESAVEL18 until 6 p.m. on Thursday.

It’s the last day for standard shipping at Bebe where they’re pushing the “sexiest party tops ever” for only $39. You’d have to buy quite a few to get free shipping – orders have to be over $150 – but maybe that won’t be a problem.

By Andrea Thatcher on December 17th, 2007

best%20sellers.jpg

Accessories that sparkle are flying off the shelves this holiday season. Hmm, could it be because ShinyStyle has been so on top of this trend? Apparently we’re not the only ones who can’t take our eyes off of metallics and are bored by anything matte when dressing for a party. Some of the best sellers? Keep reading.

You can still order stylish stocking stuffers at Free People to get them in time for Christmas. And with the code LASTMINUTE the shipping is free, so that, you know, you can afford stocking stuffers that don’t come from CVS in the first place. We chose some sparkly bangles , $18, perfect for New Year’s Eve when all ostentatious and overbearing accessories must be dragged out and worn all at once. In the middle is the tinsel stranded headband , $24, to help your friends/sister/cool mom maintain her do in the blustry winter winds of late. And lastly a cute cozy wristlet for $38.

Bling it on with Rimistyle

By Andrea Thatcher on December 14th, 2007

rimistyle%20bling.jpg

Rimistyle thinks a lot like us when it comes to dressing up a little black dress on a budget!. While we know that skimping on accessories isn’t recommended by glossy magazine editors who say to “invest” in $700 pumps while buying your clothes at H&M, some of us will never ever have the disposable income to buy $700 pumps, even at half price. Plus, if you already have something great to wear in your closet, the quickest way to update it is with accessories, and when one of your other accessories – your wallet – is a little light, inexpensive is your only option. Rimistyle brings you these disco nights clutches for only $36, and this shining star necklace set will only set you back $22.

10 Outfits for 10 Occasions: Andrea’s budget New Year’s Eve outfit

By Andrea Thatcher on December 12th, 2007

Andrea%20-%20budget%20outfit.jpg

No, this outfit isn’t for me. It’s for Andrea Osiek who needs a fabulous outfit for a big New Year’s Eve party. We’ll get over our jealousy that her husband takes ballroom dancing lessons with her, because she needs a low-rent get up because of medical expense (hope everything goes well!). She really doesn’t want to spend very much and wants to use pieces from her existing wardrobe, so we tried to keep some part of the ensemble basic and let others speak louder. We started with a little black dress which Andrea probably already has in her closet. If not, this one is from Isaac Mizrahi for Target and is on sale for $29.99. For the rest of the outfit, keep reading.

10 Outfits for 10 Occasions – Barbara’s fancy flats

By Andrea Thatcher on December 10th, 2007

Barbara%20-%20flats%20outfit.jpg

Reader Barbara wrote in to our 10 Outfits for 10 Occasions contest for advice to a common problem. She loves her strappy heels, especially when dressing up for New Year’s Eve, but feels uncomfortable when she’s taller than her boyfriend. Luckily there is no shortage of fancy flats out there this holiday season. So, while we concentrate on a Miu Miu pair as part of our outfit, we’ll also give you options at a few different price points. Barbara mentioned sequined cocktail dresses, so we chose this Stenay sequin dress from Nordstrom for $228 to start off this outfit.

Everyone wants supermodel style these days, and it’s more attainable than ever with so many models launching fashion lines at reasonable prices. The latest on the list? Iman. The collection will include jewellery and handbags taking inspiration from her own wardrobe and lifestyle. The wife of rock legend David Bowie will sell her collection on the Home Shopping Network and on hsn.com.

“When I thought about doing the collection, I asked myself, ‘What must I have for me?’” Iman said. “And it always came back to accessories. They are the things that change a wardrobe immediately.” The jewelry will run $19.95 to $59.95 and the bags $49.95 to $129.95.

Fashion stars like Isaac Mizrahi, Stuart Weitzman and Jeffrey Kalinsky celebrate Hannukah

By Andrea Thatcher on December 6th, 2007

star%20of%20david%20pendant.jpg

Fashion headliners shared with WWD how they’re celebrating Hanukkah this year, and it’s no surprise a lot of plans have to do with shopping!

Isaac Mizrahi created a Hanukkah dog line for Target, just in time to gift items to his boyfriend’s Jack Russell-Beagle mix.

Stuart Weitzman is on the receiving end of the gifting, his wife searches for fabulous antique shoes – some designed by Weitzman’s father – to give him for Hanukkah.

And Jeffrey Kalinsky of Jeffrey New York is so pleased that his parents have taken to shopping for designer items, he’s going to gift those items to them this year. If you’re interested in gifting the platinum and diamond Star of David pendant at left, it’s available at Tiffany’s for $1,950.

Yay or Nay Wednesday: holiday-themed jewelry

By Andrea Thatcher on December 5th, 2007

holiday%20earrings.jpg

To preface why I could possibly think holiday-themed jewelry is a yay, let me say that my mother was an elementary school teacher. I grew up thinking that necklaces with large wooden fruits on them were normal. And it didn’t help that my other arbiter of style, my grandmother, had a jewelry collection that was probably 80% rhinestone (I believe I’ve kept mine to a respectable 20%). So, when I stopped wearing earrings with jingling bells on them in middle school, I thought that was quite a sacrafice for style. What do you think – are tasteful jewelry items in holiday shapes acceptable? I’m not talking about crosses or Star of David necklaces but actual snowman, Christmas-tree variety shapes. Is it acceptable to quell your urges with a wreath pin on your coat lapel? Yay or Nay?
