More wearable clothes for pre-fall were presented yesterday, this time from Carolina Herrera. The thing about wearable designer collections is that on the one hand they’re much easier to approximate into your own wardrobe even if you can’t afford the real thing. But the disappointing thing is that you’ll always miss the beautiful craftsmanship and luxurious details that perhaps aren’t so obvious when you’re inspired by something a bit more outlandish. We loved that Carolina threw in some more overtly sexy items with this collection, while maintaining her impeccable aesthetic.
You’ve been checking out all the pictures online (you know you have – it’s not just for the boys anymore!) so be sure to check out the real thing on ABC tonight at 10 p.m. on CBS. We’re super excited for the Spice Girls performance, as well as Seal crooning to Heidi, and Will.i.Am. Oh, and the fantastic winged creations and sky-high stilettos stomping down the runway.
Oscar de la Renta just may be our dream designer. That designer whose store we would go to if we had a Pretty Woman moment. And his pre-fall 2008 collection presented Monday night in a Park Avenue church really illustrates why. The shapes and looks are simultaniously aspirational, wearable, and artistically pleasing. While there were a few misses – awkwardly shaped wool knit yetti skirts with large leaf patterns – it is amazing how within a 63 look collection de la Renta manages to really work several different themes to winning success in each. The florals, the tweeds, the circle skirts and the slimmer silhouettes – they’re all beautiful. What do we take away from this for fall?
Too bad it’s not yay or nay Wednesday anymore! Victoria Beckham, seen at left in a Marc Jacobs sheet dress at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show, has been confirmed as the star of the Marc Jacobs spring ad campaign. It seems coming to America was good for Posh Spice, as she slowly seems to be gaining credibility in the fashion world, with this being the ultimate nod. But why? Have we learned nothing from the rise and fall, rise and fall, rise and fall of Paris Hilton? Beckham just seems like a very similar character to me. But when you hear that Jacob’s spring line is supposed to be a sexy, peekaboo collection, the pairing does make a little more sense.
He is. So New York Fashion Week will have to make room for another U.K. designer because Jonathan Saunders is joining the British brigade of designers who make the biannual trip to the city to show their new collections. I guess it’s not much more trouble to cross the Atlantic if you have to pack up your showroom anyway, but it’s got to be a lot more expensive! I suppose they hope the U.S. exposure will be worth it.
Known for his colourful geometric prints and for dressing Thandie Newton on quite a regular basis, he’s set to bring some colour to the runways of New York.
Now that we’ve covered the celebrity entertainers at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show last Thursday, let’s move on to the incredibly hot intimate fashions. I’ve chosen some of my favorites to show you–there were almost too many to choose from! The black, green, blue and turquoise jeweled lace bra and panty set on the right is absolutely gorgeous. I love the flower print lace pattern and design of the jewels–and the colors go perfectly together. And how adorable is the sequined peppermint candy set on the right?! What a Christmas treat–I would definitely wear that to every holiday party! Continue over the jump to see more top picks from the show.
The Victoria’s Secret fashion show premiered last night and it was absolutely sizzling! The show will debut on CBS December 4th, but we’re featuring some of the hottest photos now. Amidst a winter wonderland setting, the show reminded me of the Rockette’s Christmas Show Spectacular with a few celebrity guests other than Santa Claus. The Spice Girls were looking super sexy in ’40s military-inspired curve-hugging outfits. Heidi Klum and Seal were radiant as they sang to each other on stage–Klum in a tight colorful mini dress and Seal in a sparkling silver suit. Continue over to the jump for more shots of the show.
The girls over at sister-site Catwalk Queen have been busy choosing their favorite dresses from last night’s 7th on Sale gala, and we’re ready to do the same. The three day sample sale was kicked off in glamorous style with Elle Macpherson, Valentino Garavani, Iman, and Kate Moss on the red carpet. It was classic black for these fashion big names, no toying with colours. Elle wore a simple strapless black dress, with pleated detail on the hip, while Iman’s dress featured tiers of ruffles, with metallic silver accents and a sheer top. Valentino and Kate prefered sleek black blazers, well Valentino is actually wearing a three-piece suit.
Project Runway is auf and running, and some stereotypical personalities have already been defined – not to mention frontrunners for the prize. This year? To have your collection sold on Bluefly.com (shoppers win either way!), a feature in Elle magazine (Judge Nina Garcia’s home tome), $100,000 to start their own line and a car (in New York? Why?). Guest judge Monique Lhuillier added her expertise to the panel this week, so we’re excited to see who else they get. We’ll be revealing some spoilers each week in the column so if you’ve haven’t watched the night before’s episode, it’s best to keep scrolling. If you saw the show and are eager to discuss, or just don’t mind being spoiled – keep reading for more photos and our recap.
Heidi Klum certainly will be busy tomorrow with the premiere of season 4 of Project Runway and filming the Victoria’s Secret fashion show! Catwalk Queen reports that Heidi, along with fellow models like Adriana Lima arrived at Los Angeles airport for the annual lingerie show. At the show, to be televised Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 10 p.m. on CBS, will also feature a performance by The Spice Girls, whose greatest hits album is being sold exclusively through VS.
After Fendi’s fashion show on the Great Wall of China, it seems like designers are clamoring for bigger, more exotic locales to present their collections. Like Pierre Cardin, who staged his latest show on the Gobi Desert. “I’ve been on a lot of voyages,” Cardin told WWD. “But this one was very special for me. The light and the emptiness and the color of the sand against the blue sky — it was like showing fashion on the edge of infinity.” The show was concieved as a prelude to a musical production for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing which Chinese officials have invited Cardin to stage. We can’t wait to see how his design aesthetic influences that spectacular show.
Season 4 of Project Runway premieres on Wednesday, have you checked out the new designers yet? There’s Chris, who seems like a combination of Jay and Austin. There are a few Parsons graduates: Jillian, Marion, and Simone. Maybe they’ll go up against FIT kids Kit and Kevin. There are definitely more smirky smiles than genuine grins with this group, so watch out! Be sure to check back after every episode for our recap of the design and drama! The judges say we’ll be surprised with some of their choices this season.
David Beckham’s incredibly hot with his clothes on or off, (Ok, maybe a little hotter without!) so I can’t wait to see pictures posted everywhere of him in his underwear! The world’s hottest soccer player is giving his fashionista wife a run for her money–he’s now signed with Armani to be the new global face of Emporio Armani underwear. And we’ll actually be seeing the ads in person, as the line will finally be launching in the U.S. in February, exclusively at Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s department stores. Beckham began shooting the ad campaign last week in Los Angeles, which will premiere in fashion magazines around the world in January.
Cat eyes and catwalk looks seem to be what Express is all about for Holiday 2007. I might have preferred some holiday music instead of the techno-y ballad, like U.K. store Marks and Spenser did in their ad. Speaking of the U.K. a lot of these looks seem European-inspired with the skinny stripes and pea coats. What do you think? Are you going to shop Express for holiday frocks?
A very hot trend this season is the full, pleated figure skating-style skirt as seen on WhoWhatWearDaily. Usually super short and flowing, it can also be worn longer, as shown above on Ashley Olsen and Molly Sims. Pair it with a wide, high-waisted belt, opaque black tights and metallic or patent leather pumps to complete this ultra-fab look. And don’t worry, this is not a one season trend–you’ll get full wear of this chic skirt through spring and summer ’08. It was a haute trend throughout the runways of PPQ (above, right), Proenza Schouler, and Donna Karan. Continue to the jump to find out wear you can find your own figure-skating-like fashions.
