The Halston runway items available on Net-a-Porter after the much-hyped show sold out in just 45 minutes after going live. It seems that eager customers couldn’t be deterred from getting their hands on two key dresses, despite what many, including our UK blogging buddies at Catwalk Queen, believed to be a rather lacklustre comeback collection. Around 25,000 shoppers logged onto the website to view the collection and other exclusive tidbits from the show. CQ bets some of those are headed for Ebay.
Nanette Lepore sent a pretty, wearable, if a bit generic fall collection down the runway yesterday. Don’t get us wrong, we’d be over-the-moon to have a closet full of her girly dresses and feminine-detailed tweed suits and separates. But, they’re just not as thrilling on the runway where we expect a bit more innovation and creativity. Plus, being a more real life collection, some of her extreme high waist pants and skirts were very models only need apply.
Inspired by the characters played by Catherine Deneuve in “The Umbrella Cherbourg” and “Belle de Jour,” Malan Breton sent a very classic, throwback collection down the runway this morning. All-natural fabrics like chiffon, organza, duchesse satin, taffeta, satin-faced gazar combine with rich wools in twill, an open lino plaid, and cashmere to pair perfectly with their respective silhouettes.
Marc Jacobs had the fashion crowd schlepping their way downtown to the New York State Armory for his Marc by Marc Jacobs show this afternoon, but it was definitely worth the trip. I’ve always preferred this line to the collection, because I really enjoy the more accessible, wearable pieces Jacobs creates. His fall 08 runway was full of preppy-punk looks – lots of plaid and houndstooth in a palette of blacks and greys infused with bright pink, blue, and yellow. There were plenty of new It bag contenders, both large and small, and some fantastic shoes as well.
Spotted: Rachel Zoe, Hillary Alexander, Carine Roitfeld, Fergie and countless NY socialites.
Check out our video of the models’ final run at the Max Azria show last night. Look for Lily Donaldson and Chanel Iman amongst the mannequins and watch Lubov and Max Azria take their final bow.
In the show notes Azria referred to his fall 08 woman as “an independent visionary. She cleverly combines textures and volume, adding touches of sensuality through corsetry and silhouette defining belts. Pairing hand molded felt caps with tulle underskirts; she dresses and lives by her own rules.”
In contrast to his comparatively girly show for Hervé Leger Max Azria’s A/W 08 show was a more mature affair. The palette was a slighty drab but earthy mix of midnight blues, mustards, greys and beiges and worked really well with the clothes. The froth of the Leger show was replaced by sheer tailoring and folded detailing on necklines and strict looking corset belts. Suspenders and stocking tops showed through sheer skirts but were tempered by demure top halves. My favourite detail from the show was the black ankle boots with grey gaiter-like tops (above right).
No staid stomping here, the models at Betsey Johnson bounce down the runway with balloons during their final turn. The fashions were classic Betsey with bright colors, whimsical prints, and a sexy silhouettes. It was surprising to see a lot of red, white, and blue which is typically a preppy look, but Betsey made it rock.

If the runway was a birthday party, the set was a beatnick bistro, as evidenced by “Beat Chick” scrawled across the show notes and Betsey staffers in black and white striped shirts. Keep reading for more videos!
This was my first Betsey Johnson show, and I knew it would be different than the other shows, but I didn’t know the difference would be so immediate and so exaggerated. Right when you walk backstage, you know that only Betsey Johnson, seen above with hair stylist Italo Gregorio, could throw a party like this mere hours before her runway show. A birthday party to be more specific, this year marks 30 years since Johnson formed a partnership with Chantal Bacon and launched the Betsey Johnson label that we love today.
Sweaters, dresses, coats, they were all belted at Tuleh last night. The waists were a little high, higher than your natural waist, but without being too exaggerated. What was exaggerated were the 50′s full skirt silhouettes – to lovely effect. But make no mistake that this collection was decidedly modern. A beautiful strapless cocktail dress was paired with a long, slouchy cardigan and patterns, colors and fabrics combined to keep the look fresh and new. The runway was a veritable rainbow of sweaters, skirts, and coats. Shine is no longer the heavy patent glare, but a more satiny sheen. For pics of my backstage adventures, keep reading.
That’s right, the bandage dress is officially back…
One of the most highly anticipated shows of this season took place yesterday, thanks to Max Azria who relaunched Hervé Leger at New York Fashion Week. Our U.K. sister-site Catwalk Queen is helping with our FW coverage, and say Azria couldn’t have taken over the label at a better time with the recent revival of the body-con trend, which Hervé Leger made famous in the late ’80s to early ’90s. The iconic bandage dress was resurrected and updated with one-shoulder necklines and ribbon appliqué. Evening style versions featured floor-sweeping satin and feathers, adding an entirely new element. Overall, it was a welcome return for the label and a fitting tribute to the “king of cling”.
Fifteen sexy celebrities in stunning red dresses strutted down the catwalk for The Heart Truth Red Dress Collection Fashion show, at New York’s Fashion Week. These ladies put the “star” back in “all-star,” showing audiences exactly it means to be a strong healthy woman.
The Red Dress Collection show is part of The Heart Truth campaign for women, which aims to raise awareness about heart disease.
Lela Rose seems to have taken a cue from the way real women are beginning to dress when she focused on a “sporty cocktail” vibe for her fall collection. Instead of responding to a more casual woman with tracksuits and velour, she integrated outerwear shapes like parkas, anoraks, and racer back details into cocktail attire. Colors of mallard green, cardinal red, and goldfinch came down the runway that also offset the sporty vibe.
Keep reading for more of Lela Rose’s designs, plus a pic of Law & Order’s Mariska Hargitay, and check back later for more on the Lela Rose for Payless shoes we saw on the runway.
Ten students from San Fran’s School of Fashion at Academy of Art University, presented yesterday at New York Fashion Week. But, two A+ ladies and a gent from this show stared the daunting white Bryant Park tents in the face and had fun with fashion.
We were backstage at Abaete today to get you up close and personal details that you’d never catch on the runway. We chose some of our favorite looks to take you from the fittings via polaroids used on the day of the show, to an in-person glimpse of the clothes, to what they looked like on the catwalk. The beauty team talked about a combination of strength and beauty, and the theme certainly seemed to extend to the clothes. Enjoy our little behind-the-scenes rundown with many more pictures after the jump, and head over to ShinyGloss later this afternoon for interviews with the hair stylist from Redken and the makeup artist from NARS.
There’s no better way to view Kati Stern’s stunning eveningwear for Venexiana than in motion, and so we’re super excited to offer this video. Please forgive that the camera girl is only 5’2″.
What’s even better is that the pieces that made this finale procession are really the strongest pieces in the collection. The glitz and glamour are poured on with Swarovski crystals, antique gold payette, sequins, and metallic threading.
