Designer Pick of the Week: Tod’s leather bag

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 18th, 2008

Tod's handbag.jpg

What is it about spring that has you ogling smaller purses?

Maybe it’s the expectation of carefree days requiring nary a gadget or umbrella in sight that leads to buying purses only big enough for a wallet and some sunglasses.

J. Crew shines a spotlight on accessories

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 18th, 2008

J. Crew accessories.jpg

Looks like we’ll have more accessories to lust after at J.Crew as they unveil their extended assortment and a new accessories-only catalog this Friday.

The assortment also includes the new J.Crew fine jewelry collection. These pieces are a bit more formal (and expensive) than the costume jewelry line.

To get an idea of the prices, a 10-karat gold boule ring with pearl is $495 and a ribbon-tied long pearl necklace is $200.

“This is our first foray into fine jewelry,” Creative Director Jenna Lyons Mazeau told WWD. “We want to be approachable.”

The new variety of bags, shoes, and jewelry is already available on J.Crew.com.

For more on the bags and shoes, keep reading.

The first images of the new H&M Marimekko print collection are starting to come out and we love the two above.

Price points vary, but are all affordable: $29.99 to $49.99. And hopefully there will be plenty to go around with 50 pieces, which include menswear.

Forever 21 tunic dress

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 17th, 2008

tunic dress.jpg

We’re loving this tunic dress from Forever 21, $27.80.

We love their ability to create cute cuts on the cheap and this is no exception.

Plus, the embroidery provides a level of detail it’s hard to find on more affordable pieces.

We’d love this with some brown sandals and a bright cardigan that picks up one of the colors of the dress.

Japan Fashion Week: Takumi Hatakeyama

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 17th, 2008

Japan Fashion Week.jpgClick image to enlarge.

Japanese fashion is so fun and creative, and so many of the things all fashion should be but too rarely is, that it is surprising that more attention isn’t paid to Japan Fashion Week. We’re doing our part to correct that by bringing you these images from the Takumi Hatakeyama fashion show. Not only is the collection fun, with a fierce sense of personal style, it’s easily relatable. You can take pieces from your own wardrobe to create similar looks. A fashion show is at its best when it gets you thinking about how you can wear pieces you own in new ways. But so many designers are so focused on having the next new exclusive shape or design that that’s often impossible.

Rachel Bilson answers tween dreams by launching clothing line with DKNY

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 13th, 2008

Rachel Bilson has one of the most sought-after and oft-copied personal styles in young Hollywood, not to mention one of the least tacky and most age-appropriate. So we’re thrilled that the former O.C. babe has teamed up with someone else familiar to the teen market – DKNY Jeans.

Bilson and DKNY Jeans are set to collaborate on a junior sportswear line called Edie Rose. (Just like Kohls and Avril Lavigne, Bilson’s won’t be on the label … interesting. More on that over at Catwalk Queen.)

But don’t worry, Bilson won’t be completely invisible, she will star in the advertising to debut this fall.

“I am just amazed at how the team at DKNY Jeans were able to listen to my ideas and come out with exactly what I was talking about. They literally brought my ideas to life,” Bilson told WWD. “I also want to show people that you don’t have to pay a million dollars for clothes that look good. You don’t have to spend a lot to get a great look.”

The Edie Rose for DKNY Jeans label will consist of a 15-piece collection featuring button-down tops, sweaters, jackets, T-shirts, dresses and two jeans styles – a straight leg and a skinny leg.

Yay or Nay Wednesday: Christian Louboutin cutout bootie

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 12th, 2008

Louboutin cutout bootie.jpg

For many of us, booties themselves were questionable enough. So what do you think of this Christian Louboutin cutout bootie, $860?

And furthermore, when you see a shoe or bag or any item that you’re not sure about – does it help sway you when it’s by a favorite designer?

Would you buy a shoe by Christian Louboutin that you would never buy from a less iconic designer? Why?

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 12th, 2008

While most of us are just shopping the Target Go International Jovovich-Hawk collection, Target is announcing its next designer phenom: Richard Chai.

Seen at left with a look from his Fall 2008 runway show, Chai is an Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation winner.

He joins fellow GO designers Jovovich-Hawk and Rogan Gregory, Target’s latest recruits, in offering new ranges this year.

Jovovich-Hawk’s collection is selling quickly, while Rogan Gregory’s collection, which could be limited to swimwear, is due around May. Chai will launch a limited-edition womenswear collection in early August.

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 11th, 2008

Pucci dress.jpg

Spring is the perfect time for Pucci!

This sundial kimono elongated top, $1,150, could probably double as a dress – and be worn with some bright tights until the weather turns if you’re brave enough!

The fainter of heart might want to try it as a beach cover up. Then slip on some jeans and you’re ready for the bar!

Urban Outfitters plans new “space”

By Andrea Thatcher on March 7th, 2008

Urban Outfitters.jpg

While most retailers are struggling right now, Urban Outfitters seems to be coming up roses. Could it be that consumers are embracing unfinished hems, sloppy construction and faded fabrics to represent their economic troubles? I kid, I kid…

One of the store’s new pursuits is Space 1520. The new concept will include a large Urban Outfitters store, which will act as landlord to other boutiques. At the shopping mecca food, entertainment and beauty will be complimentary, and the building will open out into a farmers’ market.

While this concept may be expanded to other cities, something everyone can expect at their local UO is new designers. Miss Sixty, Fred Perry, and Insight were all recently introduced, and collaborations with Steven Alan, Charlotte Ronson, Corpus, Geren Ford, Paul & Joe Sister and Bing Bang are impending.

Old Navy enamel bangles

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 6th, 2008

Bangles.jpg

Old Navy has knocked off their own version of the enamel bangles everyone from Coach to Kenneth Jay Lane has offered lately, with pretty cute results!

The bangles range from $7.50 to $12.50, and could easily slip onto a wristful of pricier pieces without notice.

Or buy a few of these to get you in the mood for spring, and start you on your way to embracing the bright color trend.

Avril Lavigne to lend her rock and roll style to Kohl’s

By Andrea Thatcher on March 5th, 2008

Avril Lavigne.jpg

WWD reports that Kohl’s Corp. has signed Avril Lavigne for the creation of a lifestyle brand for juniors called Abbey Dawn.

New Abbey Dawn fashion collections will rotate every 90 days beginning in July, if everything goes according to plan.

The collections are expected to blend punk and feminine styles for price points from $24 to $48. Clothing and jewelry will be in store first, with other product categories to follow.

It seems strange to go to the trouble of signing a celebrity and then not use their name, so it will be interesting to see how involved in Abbey Dawn Lavigne ends up being.
