ShinyStyle’s top 5 runway collections of 2010

By Andrea Petrou on December 16th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

Carrying on from our top 10 fashion moments of 2010, I’m looking at some of the highlights of the various Fashion Weeks that have happened this year. From Alexander McQueen’s first runway show under the direction of Sarah Burton, to the oil-slick punk aesthetic at Balenciaga and classic Parisian style at Chanel, each show has been a joy to cover. But when I got down to it and racked my brains for all the collections I’ve pored over in the last year, I’ve found that the five collections in the gallery below have been particularly special. Check them out below. If you have any other collections this year that you think especially deserve a mention, have your say and leave us a comment below.

5. Christian Dior SS2011

Everything about this collection was just somuch fun. John Galliano breathed new life into the 1950s sexpot pin-up style of dress, with bright cherry and blue colours, neon makeup and cheeky sailor hats. If this is how everyone is going to look on the beaches next year (and we hope they do) then it's going to be a very silly, fun summer.

NYFW Hightlights: Jeremy Scott

By Andrea Petrou on September 16th, 2010

Jeremy Scott decided to ignore the classic looks displayed by many designers at NYFW, sending his models down in 80s chic.

Kanye West, Solange Knowles and Kelly Osbourne watched from the front row as models made up like clones of a young Marilyn Monroe,  took on Debbie Harry fashion with printed 80s tees (we’re sure Vivienne Westwood and Henry Holland would approve), PVC skirts and bustier dresses.

Others strutted down the runway in (fake) prosciutto dresses (take note, Lady Gaga), garbage bag dresses and even a straitjacket wedding dress…. well some people say you do have to be mad to get wed….

NYFW Highlights: Anna Sui

By Andrea Petrou on September 16th, 2010

Hippy 70s chic and boho were the order of the day for Anna Sui.

Sui’s designs have got to be one of   my favourite collections of  NYFW. Models marched down the catwalk channelling  Woodstock and flower power.

Denim playsuits (I’m holding on to mine from this season) teamed with  70′s style floral crochet cardigan  knits and hats filled the catwalk.

And it didn’t end there with rouched suede boots  and floaty chiffon and cotton “maxi” dresses, in a patchwork of florals, paisleys and Liberty prints completing Sui’s  collection.

I can’t wait till I can get myself some of the highstreet copies.

View the gallery below and let us know what you think of the designs.

NYFW Highlights: Elie Tahari

By Andrea Petrou on September 15th, 2010

While some designers sent their models down the S/S catwalk in outrageous designs Elie Tahari stuck to his classic guns.

The designer, known for his safe, yet gorgeous designs opted for neutral colours (they’re going to be huge next season ladies) but added a little bit of glam with some shimmering fabrics, which was demonstrated in his gold-coloured metallic bustier worn with a cotton viole shirt, gold-coloured metallic hot shorts and a platform wedge sandal.

As expected with any S/S 2011 collection, there were lots of shorts, which leaned more towards a sportier look than the previous cutesy styles, and like many designers he also gave a small, updated nod to the 70s with offerings such as a denim playsuit (hold on those), a range of all in ones and smart tailored trousers.

NYFW Highlights: Mulberry SS2011

By Andrea Petrou on September 15th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

As Andrea said before, Fashion Week in New York is coming to a glitzy, air-kissing end and it’s all very sad. As a send-off to one of the world’s biggest fashion events (for now, anyway- it’ll be back, girls), ShinyStyle is bringing you all the highlights from the past week. So far we’ve celebrated the Spring/Summer 2011 collections from both Tommy Hilfiger and Diane Von Fustenberg, but now it’s Mulberry’s turn for a bit of Shiny-Love.

It was clear from the get-go that Mulberry’s SS2011 collection was going to a girl’s dream – the floor space surrounding the runway was decorated to look like a lily pond, with huge peachy lilypads and hot-pink flowers scattered across the floor. The mood of the show had a dreamy, springtime “pretty girl in a pretty dress walking in a pretty garden” feel to it that reflected the clothes perfectly. The milky-skinned, auburn-haired Mulberry girls were sent stomping down the catwalk in full-skirted, ladylike creations in sugary tones of pink and sky blue. Go away Christmas, I’m ready for my spring wardrobe now..

NYFW Highlights:Diane Von Furstenberg

By Andrea Petrou on September 15th, 2010

Diane Von Furstenberg’s designs alway stand out at NYFW. The designs are soft, yet the prints bold and this season the designer didn’t disappoint.

Giving a nod to the 60s, which was perhaps driven by the current Mad Men trend, DVF’s prints were monochrome, colourful in small and large blocks and featured on loose jackets, 60s shift dresses, Capri pants, jumpsuits and swing back jackets.

And the colours were just as bold as the prints with purples, golds,  tan and lime, running through the collection.

Aside from the 60s VonFurstenberg also made the Grecian Goddess theme huge part of her collection, with floaty dresses complete with tassells in lame fabrics and accessories with silver beading.

Alexa Chung debuts her collection for Madewell at New York Fashion Week

By Andrea Petrou on February 16th, 2010
ALEXA CHUNG FOR MADEWELL COLLECTION LAUNCH, Fall 2010

Alexa Chung’s fashionista status has just gone up (yes we didn’t think it was possible either).

The model turned TV presenter turned fashion designer presented her debut collection for US brand Madewell at New York fashion week yesterday.

Her designs, which included tea dresses and shorts were inspired by the 1960s and reflected Alexa’s own personal style, especially the grey socks worn with sandals. However our favourite part of the collection has got to be the cute denim dungaree dress.

Of her collection Alexa said: “[Madwell's] vision is kind of the same as mine. They like laid back styles, they like kind of relaxed clothes — classic, timeless things. So when they asked to collaborate, it was a perfect fit.”

We really hope a UK based retailer recognises Alexa’s talents soon because we’re itching to get our hands on some of her creations.

New York Fashion Week: Marc Jacobs A/w 2010

By Andrea Petrou on February 16th, 2010
Marc Jacobs - Runway - Fall 2010 MBFW

Marc Jacob’s show has been one of the most talked about in the lead up to New York Fashion Week, especially following his decision not to invite A-listers to the event this year.

However, being one of our favourite designers, it was also his collection we were excited about and he didn’t disappoint.

Marc Jacobs - Runway - Fall 2010 MBFW

The show began in typical Marc Jacob’s style, presenting the audience with a giant box, with a smaller box positioned in front of it. To start the show Marc along with Robert Duffy came into the room and ripped away the brown paper sides to reveal a range of models wearing the AW2010 trends.

The collection included a range of fitted tailored workwear with slight 80s undertones alongside femine fitted evening wear, which consisted of empire line long dresses in metallic fabric and 80s sequined numbers.

Hems stayed no shorter than knee length and paved the way for some stunning dresses and skirts, which although kept the tailored look, were transformed into something that little bit girly through the beige colours and accessories including cute ankle socks and t-bar shoes.

However it’s bad news for PETA because it seems fur is definitely walking into the new season if Marc’s designs have anything to do with it.

Lacoste catwalk at New York fashion week

By Andrea Petrou on September 16th, 2009

With London Fashion Week just around the corner, the excitement is building up to see what designers are planning out for us to wear next season.

If you’re a keen fashionista then you’ll already know New York fashion Week has been going for a few weeks now, and although we couldn’t be there to give you the latest news and reviews we have had a scout around to see what other people have to say.

We love this video, which shows Lacoste’s new season looks. As you will see, the brand known for being sporty and preppy has stuck closely with this style this season and we’re sure you’ll agree, they’ve done it well.

We love the white, netball skirt, which can be teamed up with a pair of plimsolls for the ultimate back to school sports look.

New York Fashion Week: Zac Posen Fall 09 Gallery

By Andrea Thatcher on February 22nd, 2009

Zac Posen’s Fall 2009 fashion show was one of the most-talked about of fashion week. It wasn’t just the beautiful couture-level clothes. And it wasn’t only the amazing model watching, yes, Coco Rocha, Lily Donaldson, Alek Wek and Sasha Pivovarova were all there. (I’ll admit to squeeling several times.) But it was the show itself with 5 baby grand pianos on the runway played by the 5 Browns, a brother/sister piano troupe, and the glitz and glamour Posen – and we – love.

New York Fashion Week: Ports 1961 Fall 2009

By Andrea Thatcher on February 20th, 2009

Ports 1961 collage.jpg

Ports 1961 participated heavily in the trend of neutrals, but unfortunately all the beige combined with rougher textures just led to a sort of sack-cloth look to the clothing. When designer Tia Cibani went bright with hot pink saris and black and pink coats it wasn’t much more successful. There were some lovely pieces in the collection, though, when Cibani paid more attention to tailoring. A jasmine lace choli dress, and a black on black Nigella damask stepped up the style a notch and had front row face Olivia Palermo (see pic after the jump) looking like she might actually wear a piece.

New York Fashion Week: Vivienne Tam Fall 2009 collection

By Andrea Thatcher on February 20th, 2009

Vivienne Tam 2.jpg

Vivienne Tam chose one of my favorite presentation styles to showcase her Fall 2009 collection. Models were perched on blocks where viewers could approach each piece to fully appreciate all the details and take everything in. It was especially nice since there was so much concept behind the collection. It was inspired by the concept of nothingness and the Asian philosophy of creating an empty space that gives way to something new and unexpected.

New York Fashion Week: Carmen Marc Valvo party gallery

By Andrea Thatcher on February 20th, 2009

The Carmen Marc Valvo cocktail party Wednesday night was fabulous, of course, but the clothes were still the stars studded around the room on mannequins both live and artificial. It was all red-carpet-worthy eveningwear – maybe we’ll see a piece on Sunday? A video presentation was playing throughout the evening, which you can watch here. Plus check out our gallery below, including a snap of Carmen!
