Dame Vivienne Westwood constantly questions why she is still working in fashion.
The British designer – who is credited with launching the UK’s punk scene in the 1970s – is not sure if she has made a conscious decision to develop her style and is just pleased to have done “so many” collections.
She said: “I don’t know if I have developed in any specific way. I always tend to like my latest collection best. I’ve done so many and I keep thinking, ‘Why do you need to keep on doing this?’ ”
The 69-year-old fashion legend also reveals the key to maintaining a successful talent is always reading, something she would encourage new designers to do.
She told the New York Post newspaper: “This is the secret: reading. A young person might be talented and can make two great collections, but then they dry up. You have to have culture.
“If not, where do you get your ideas? If you don’t understand the past, you don’t understand the world. By knowing what has been done, you know what’s possible.”
Nicole Scherzinger has been signed up to host the US version of ‘The X Factor’.
Simon Cowell has reportedly signed up the former Pussycat Dolls singer – who is managed by his rival, ‘American Idol’ boss Simon Fuller – to present the show after negotiating a deal with Nicole’s American label CAA to ensure she has a clear schedule when the series launches later in the year.
However, with the 32-year-old beauty originally tipped for a role on the judging panel of the US ‘X Factor’, her “natural” ability in front of the camera convinced the 51-year-old music mogul to offer her the coveted hosting job instead.
An insider told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “Never has there been so much behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing as with ‘X Factor’ USA. “Having lined up Nicole as a potential judge, Simon decided to try something different and unexpected, and have a non-mainstream presenter present.
“Nicole’s had screen tests and is a natural in front of the camera. Autocue does not faze her at all. As an established singer, both as a solo artist and in a group, Nicole will be great with the contestants and knows what she is talking about.
“The approach was made a few weeks ago. And although she has still not formally signed, it’s all looking very positive.”
With Nicole having bagged the presenting job, Simon is still attempting to convince Fox bosses to sign up Cheryl Cole for the judging panel, amid concerns the ‘Promise This’ singer is relatively unknown in the US.
The source added: “On the judging front, things are changing almost daily, but Simon has put his neck on the line to sell Cheryl to network bosses. After being stonewalled initially, Simon believes he has convinced them to sign off her deal.”
Simon and record producer L.A. Reid are the only judges confirmed to appear on the panel so far, while Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey and Paula Abdul have all been linked to the two female roles.
An as-of-yet-unnamed male star will also co-host the series alongside Nicole.
The 24-year-old singer – who is well known for her ever-changing hairstyles, including a wool-like up do and a waist-length blonde wig – admitted she is worried about her locks because of the amount she has dyed them.
She told People: “[I had to] get a chemical haircut because my blonde hair is falling out.”
The ‘Born This Way’ hitmaker, who is naturally a brunette, also confesses she sleeps in her make-up every day of the week.
Asked how often she goes to bed with her face full of make-up, Gaga said: “Seven. That’s not good for your skin, but I’m blessed with good genes.”
However, she admits she no longer uses mascara and fake eyelashes because she thinks they are both old fashioned.
She said: “I think it’s more modern not to wear either. I just wear eyeliner.”
Last week it was revealed Lady Gaga would receive a style award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).
The eccentric star will pick up the Fashion Icon award on June 6.
Riccardo Tisci initially turned down his job as creative director at Givenchy.
The designer – who is widely tipped to take over from shamed designer John Galliano at French fashion house Christian Dior – explained while he was first chosen to replace Julien Macdonald at Givenchy in February 2005, he was reluctant to give up running his own line.
However, when his mother told him she had to sell her home after falling on hard times, he quickly changed his mind.
Riccardo explained: “I wasn’t interested. Not at all. I was going to say no. But the week before, my mother called me and said to me, ‘I am going to tell you something I haven’t even told your sisters: I think I am going to sell our house because your sisters are struggling, they’re having children, they need the money. I will go to a retirement home.’
“When I heard that it was like a knife in my heart. I felt like such a failure, that my mother had to sell the house of my father whom I don’t remember.
“And then I went to Paris, and they showed me a contract with all these zeros on it, and it was like help from God. I thought ‘If I sign this, my mother will never have to worry again.’ So I signed it.”
The Italian designer credits his mother with giving him the “confidence” he needed to believe in his skills in the fashion world.
He added to the Financial Times newspaper: “My mother, she gave me everything. She gave me the confidence to believe in myself. It’s a strange time in fashion – everything has got so big.
“We can get very insular, the fashion tribe – we think we’re a lot of people but actually we’re very small – but my mother, my sisters don’t understand fashion now, which is how I know what the final consumer feels. They don’t want to buy image, they want to buy substance.”
Mel B always loses her pregnancy weight straight away.
The 35-year-old former Spice Girl – who already has 12-year-old Phoenix Chi and three-year-old Angel Iris from previous relationships – is expecting her first baby with her husband Stephen Belafonte this summer but isn’t worried about piling on the pounds.
She said: “I don’t really stress about pregnancy weight because I take it all off as soon as I’ve had the baby. I put on more weight with my second baby than my first.
“My first baby, I was on tour with the Spice Girls until I was five months pregnant so that kept me pretty fit, doing a two-and-a-half hour dance show. When Angel was born I relaxed a little bit more, my life wasn’t as hectic and I just chilled out.”
Mel also revealed she loves being pregnant because she can eat whatever she wants.
She told HELLO! magazine: “I like the feeling of being pregnant. I like being able to eat something if I’m craving it.”
Lady Gaga is getting an ‘egg’ bed.
The eccentric singer is spending £1.2 million on renovating her New York condo as a shrine to her onstage persona and it will include a version of the ‘egg’ vessel she arrived at and climbed out of at the recent Grammy Awards.
Her home will also showcase her flamboyant costumes, several props and keepsakes she has collected on her travels, which include bones and masks.
An insider said: “This house project is Gaga’s new baby.
“The egg vessel is being made especially for her. She’ll be able to sleep in it, in place of a double bed. She felt so a home in the egg on stage – she spent hours in it meditating and says when she’s in it she feels at peace.”
Architects will reportedly start work on the ‘Born This Way’ singer’s property in a fortnight’s time and she is said to have also enlisted the help of her close friend Rick Genest and fashion director Nicola Formichetti to advise her on the interior design.
Last month, Gaga revealed she will always live in the New York neighbourhood where she grew up as she wants a “normal” life and was left unimpressed after a brief stint on the Hollywood party scene.
She said: “I actually made a choice to keep my life pretty normal.
“Some point about two years ago I said to myself, ‘OK, am I going to put my toe in Hollywood’s pond and figure out if I want to live a glamorous life and assimilate to the glamorous lifestyle’, but I really didn’t want to do it.”
“I still live where I always lived, I still hang out and drink whisky at the same bars. I still go to the same hardware store.”
Kate Moss wants Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones to play at her upcoming wedding to Jamie Hince.
The British supermodel – who is tying the knot with rocker Jamie on July 2 – has reportedly drawn up a long list of acts she is keen to have perform at the couple’s nuptials in the hope of turning the event into a “mini Glastonbury” festival.
As well as Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones, the 37-year-old catwalk queen is also believed to be firing off calls to Duran Duran, The Clash, Kanye West, Primal Scream and close pal, Gossip frontwoman Beth Ditto.
An insider explained: “Kate is pulling out the big guns for her wedding. She has drawn up her dream list of artists she wants to play and is wasting no time asking them. A lot of them are her mates and shouldn’t have any problem doing a number.
“Her pals are dubbing it Kate’s mini-Glasto from the line-up she has in mind. It’s turning into a whole weekend celebration.”
However, while the pair are hoping to secure an A-list line-up of performers for their wedding, her huge guest list is proving problematic when it comes to finding a venue big enough to accommodate Kate, Jamie and their showbiz pals.
The source added to Britain’s The Sun newspaper: “After weeks of searching, there are options but Kate’s out-growing them with her guest list. She has been worrying about it as it’s getting so big and she’s reluctant to take anyone off.
“She wants to invite everyone who has been there for her since she was young.”
Mila Kunis was happy to go back to her normal body size after working on ‘Black Swan’.
The actress – who stars opposite Natalie Portman in the Darren Aronofsky – directed psychological thriller about a troubled ballet dancer – had to lose weight to become a typical dancer in the film, but was grateful to stop working out when it had wrapped.
She said: “To be able to pretend to be a ballerina for five months was great – but boy, was I happy to get out of that life.”
However the Hollywood beauty did enjoy the “challenge” of becoming so physically fit.
She said: “The best part was the challenge of it, the challenge of changing your body.”
Natalie – who won the Best Actress Oscar for the role earlier this year – worked out for eight hours a day to get as thin as she could to play a dancer.
Discussing it recently, she said: “You are constantly putting your body through extreme pain, so you get that understanding of the self-flagellation of a ballet dancer.”
Fergie stays fit by bringing her trainer on tour.
Although the Black Eye Peas singer performs punishing dance routines during her concerts she revealed she is so fanatical about keeping fit that she brings an exercise expert with her to ensure she stays in shape and even asks her dancers for tips.
She explained to People: “I brought my trainer on tour.
“I have the most amazing dancers. They do all these different things, a lot of squeezes, a lot of lunges. It’s building what you want in the derrière – working for it!”
Fergie’s obsession with exercise is not surprising as she has previously admitted she struggled to lose the 17lbs she gained for her role in the movie ‘Nine’ after filming finished.
She said: “I was eating my brains out. I ordered everything fried, full of fat and salty.
“It was a very gradual thing, getting back into it and finally letting a trainer train me. I didn’t want to be told what to do, and I wasn’t mentally ready to crack the whip.”
Katie Holmes developed her Holmes & Yang clothing line especially for “working moms”.
The actress established the fashion range with her stylist Jeanne Yang and Jeanne revealed their mission when they started was to create a set of clothes that busy mothers can “depend on”.
She said: “Sometimes when life gets really busy you don’t want to have to think about what it is you’re going to wear and you just want to have certain pieces that you know you can just depend on – what are those pieces? – and so that was kind of our challenge.
“Both of us are working moms, so we’re pretty busy, and, having a line, being moms and then having our careers is quite a lot.”
The business partners started their line after realising that they were both fans of sewing at home.
Jeanne told NY magazine: “It’s so rare, unfortunately, that I actually know people who are into crafting and doing stuff like that.
Katie – who has a four-year-old daughter, Suri, with husband Tom Cruise – said her favourite things to sew are “aprons for the girls, pillows, tablecloths, baby clothes, Barbie clothes.”
The pair also agree that making money from the label isn’t as important as all the pieces being produced in the US.
Jeanne said: “100 percent of our line is produced here in the States. We can make some of the most beautiful luxury pieces here.
“Kate and I are always talking about how we’re Americans, and we want people to realise this, and so our price points – you know we don’t have the best margins but it doesn’t matter for us.”
Katie added: “It’s more important that it’s made in the USA.”
Kate's seethrough dress raised a huge £78,000.
The see-through dress that first attracted Prince William to Kate Middleton has been auctioned off for £65,000 plus an additional £13,000 in buyer’s fees.
The dress, which cost £30 to make, was originally worn by Ms Kate Middleton at a charity fashion show held at St Andrews University in 2002.
When Kate Middleton hit the catwalk wearing the see through dress and black lingerie her future husband to be, Prince William, was in the crowd. The two originally met at St Andrews and will be married next month at the Westminster Abbey.
The dress was purchased at the auction by one individual on behalf of “Nick from Jersey.” The buyer considered the dress to be an iconic piece and was very happy to pay the combined £78,000 for the purchase.
The auction had begun at a starting bid of £20,000 but soon climbed up via telephone bids. Once the price reached £50,000 the bidding became a two-way battle between some pre-registered bidders and the individual who walked away the winner of the auction.
The dress was originally created by Charlotte Todd back in 2000 when she was a student in the fashion design programme at the University of West England. Ms Todd explained that she and her husband will most likely put the money towards the purchase of a home.
“It was just pure luck that Kate, out of all those girls, wore it for a few seconds,” said the 31-year-old, who lives in Bristol. “I don’t even see it as a dress, really. To me it’s just a piece of fabric.”
Kerry Taylor, a London auctioneer, had estimated that the dress would be auctioned off for somewhere between £8,000 and £10,000.
The gorgeous singer shocked fans in 2008 when she unveiled a new pixie crop and Rihanna credits the drastic cut with influencing her sound and personal style.
Rihanna says cutting her hair changed her life. Rihanna – who is currently sporting curly red hair – told US Vogue: “When I cut my hair, the whole sound changed, my style changed.”
The 23-year-old pop star is renowned for her unusual outfits and Rihanna explained she now loves experiment with her style.
She said: “Fashion has become more about taking a risk. When I am putting looks together, I dare myself to make something work.”
Rihanna also revealed she has finally come to terms with her curves and has decided to celebrate them rather than wishing she was skinnier.
She explained: “Over the holidays…I realized that I actually like my body, even if it’s not perfect according to the book. I just feel sexy. For the first time, I don’t want to get rid of the curves. My body is comfortable, and it’s not unhealthy, so I’m going to rock with it.”
John Galliano’s alleged anti-Semitic outburst could have been caused by his demanding workload.
The designer was sacked from his role as creative director of Christian Dior following claims he verbally abused a couple in Paris last month but his friend and fellow designer Azzedine Alaia blames the pressures of the fashion industry and said John is “irreplaceable”.
He told WWD: “It’s sad. He’s a friend. It’s too much: too many collections; too much pressure. There are some people who are irreplaceable.”
