After a very mild start to the autumn here in England, the chill has just set in and we expect it to keep this way well into the New Year. Light cardigans and t-shirts are once more being replaced by thick, warming winter warmers as people prepare for Arctic winds (and we hope) snow.
While that black coat that you’ve recycled for years is probably still very wearable, if you are looking to upgrade your winter wardrobe with some new outerwear this season here are five coats that caught our eye.

I Love 2 Love is an up-and-coming boutique leather company that boasts a fashion-forward capsule of leather jackets that promise to stand the test of time. With generous reductions happening on the site at the moment, now is the time to check them out.
A favourite of mine out of the capsule is IL2L’s asymmetric leather biker jacket – an updated spin on a timeless style made iconic by heart-throbs such as James Dean and Marlon Brando, IL2L has stripped the biker jacket down to its’ bare bones and added in asymmetric angular detail to create a cleaner, more modern look. It’s a bargain for real leather and is an easy way to toughen up a girlie outfit in seconds. Another piece that caught my eye is their pleather hooded bomber jacket, which will be going on my wishlist come pay-day. It’s definitely a cool way to keep your hair dry when it’s raining (or disguise yourself from people you know when you’re doing the Walk of Shame in the morning).

We’re not sure about you, but the days when we could go to a winter party wearing next to nothing have long gone, and going out without a jacket is unthinkable.

We’re not ashamed to admit that we love a little bit of Girls Aloud, especially their fun, flirty and sometimes saucy, fashion sense.
So when we spotted a picture of Sarah on the set of the new St Trinian’s film (yes there’s another one) wearing these boyish, rocker style boots we had to find out where they were from.
And we did just that. They’re from Cat Footwear and cost £124.99.
We love the fact they are flat yet funky meaning we can still look good without worrying about how to manage the ice in heels this winter. Team them up with leggings (well you might freeze in Sarah’s shorts) and a structured waistcoat for the ultimate winter look.

Balmain’s leather military jacket, $7,045, is hot. Hot in a way that could be styled vintage victorian or New York nightspot. Which is, of course, the very best kind of hot. Since it’s sold out on Net-a-Porter, I like to imagine this designer treasure is going to be worn and loved. This is the type of piece that people who can afford to are splurging on amidst the recession.

We wrapped up $20 gifts under $200 and are on to the $50-$100 price range. The first thing we looked for? A fab coat for gifting to your favorite girl. We like this Gap plaid belted coat, on sale for $94.99, because the plaid can be a little holiday, a little preppy or a little indie depending on the giftee’s style. This Old Navy canvas peacoat is perfect for today’s rainy, dreary weather on the East Coast. If it’s particularly chilly, the coat is roomy enough to layer under, and then you can just add a scarf on top.
While we chose the neutral bone color, there are also fun options like purple and green if you’re looking for something more bold.
The best part? Right now it’s only $25. Old Navy has up to 50 percent off all outerwear this week, and we’re guessing prices will remain low once the cold snaps really hit.
If your part of the country is already snapping – there’s wool versions of the peacoat under $50 as well.

Jessica Alba is doing the talk show circuit this week promoting her creepy new film “The Eye.”
While we might have to cover our eyes if we were to see said film, we can’t get enough glimpses of a wide-eyed alba before her appearance on Letterman.
With fashion week imminent we’re definitely scouring for chic ways to stay warm on city streets and this brown toggle-ish coat is a great one. And we love the peek of red at the bottom too.
