Saks Fifth Avenue unveiled its expanded designer shoe department this August, inviting shoe enthusiasts to browse with ease on a floor that reportedly has its own zip code. The flagship store in New York City is dazzling shoppers with attractive displays—over 100,000 designer pairs in inventory—along with luxe amenities such as private shopping appointments, rotating pedestals, and plenty of space to try on a few (dozen) pairs at your leisure. It’s a trip to shoe heaven for any well-heeled enthusiast, and you’ll find more than just the average collections at this ritzy emporium. Accessories and refreshments await on the eighth floor—from Dior to Christian Louboutin—it’s too soon to tell if you might need a traveler’s map to find your way around.

Trilogy Stores, the famous London-based streetwear and denim shop, has quickly become an addictive boutique stop for fashion-savvy travelers with its vast collection of top-brand denim designers. With a full stock of the latest flare, hipster, and boot cut jeans for all shapes and sizes, plans to open up the online shop are underway.
Signature brands include Juicy Couture, Citizens of Humanity, Sass and Bide, as well as the latest most-coveted collections from J Brand Jeans as seen on Victoria Beckham, above. Since it’s difficult for most American enthusiasts to head over the ocean on a regular basis, Trilogy is launching an online shop on September 1; getting a hold of the latest by Pyrus and Paper Denim Cloth may not be so difficult after all.

Have you ever felt like you’ve tried on every pair of jeans that exist? I have a really tough time finding the perfect pair of jeans. Right now, I have only one ‘perfect’ pair, and even then, they’re a little too long and a little too low cut for most of my shirts–but hey, they make my butt look good. That’s all that really matters, right? Well, a friend just told me about this site, www.zafu.com, that finds the brands of jeans that fit you best. It asks you a few questions about how jeans typically fit, and your body shape, and then links you to the sites to buy those jeans. You can shop by price and save your ‘My Jeans’ profile to the site. I found a bunch of brands that I’ve never tried before in a great price range–less than $50. I’m definitely going to check those jeans out, I’ll let you know how it goes.

Italian designer Roberto Cavalli, known for animal prints and curve-hugging dresses (see image above) worn by Jennifer Lopez and Madonna, has been slated to join the likes of Viktor & Rolf and Stella McCartney to design a collection for H&M.
Margareta van der Bosch, creative director for H&M, said of the designer, “There is no place for shyness and no possibility of ending up with a mainstream wardrobe of everyday basics. The Roberto Cavalli collections represent an exuberant, successful lifestyle.”

Walmart’s making waves in the fashion industry. The world’s largest retailer has recently made an exclusive deal with Iconix Brand Group to carry the Ocean Pacific and Op brands—the labels in surf and beach culture. The brands have been featured in high-end specialty stores like Fred Segal and Barney’s, as well as department stores Kohl’s and J.C. Penney. The new Walmart lines are expected to be released this spring.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are fixtures on both worst dressed lists and in the front row of fashion shows from Marc Jacobs to Balenciaga. We watched them grow up from matching cutesy flowery outfits, selling their monikers to Wal-Mart collections for tweens, to towering platform heels, layered on black sweaters and scarves, and floor-length gowns, becoming muses to avante-garde designers. Now the teeny tiny twins are foraying into high-end clothing with the launch of the Row. Minimalist separates like blazers (see the plaid one worn by Ashley, above) and mini skirts, knit t-shirts starting at $150, and oversize fur coats (breaking the bank at over $3,000) make up the line, to be sold at Barneys. Ashley Olsen spoke to New York Magazine, “Wal-Mart was about the customer. It taught us how to be commercial. This is about me and my sister, and what we like to wear.” The twins are involved in every part of the manufacturing process, working closely with a designer, and Ashley has been caught by paparazzi exiting the factory where the clothes are being made.

Burberry Limited filed a lawsuit August 24 in Manhattan federal court against Iconix Brand Group (the company that purchased London Fog out of bankruptcy a year ago) for infringing on the British brand’s signature check design and style of advertising in London Fog’s four-page ad spread of Glamour magazine. The ad features celebrities such as Kevin Bacon, Teri Hatcher, and Cheryl Hines wearing the allegedly infringing check pattern. Burberry says that Iconix’s launch of the new London Fog brand with a trenchcoat that has a checked lining “is no accident,” and described how the spacing, thickness, squares and overlapping lines are identical to its own. But I don’t know, it’s a little hard to tell, because the London Fog ads are in black and white, but it doesn’t seem like the two patterns are all that similar. They’re both plaid, but the London Fog pattern looks different to me, like more of a squarish pattern. What do you think?

London-based designer Alice Temperley first introduced her feminine frocks to the English runway in 2003. By the time she debuted in New York in the spring of 2006 she already had a following in America. For her Target Go International collection coming to stores September 16th, Temperley created interpretations of her fall 2007 ready-to-wear collection, using the same gray, black, white, and blue palette, high Victorian necklines, and floppy bow accents, while making the clothing more everyday wearable and, of course, a lot more affordable.

Joining past designers Behnaz Sarafpour, Proenza Schouler, and most recently Libertine, Erin Fetherston has been announced by Target as the next designer for their Go International collection. Fetherston is known for her girly dresses and cute accents like ruffles and bows, and she brings these trademarks to her Target collection. The clothing is very ‘little Parisian girl’ with Peter Pan collars, ruffle accents, and an oversize heart handbag. The American-born, Parsons Paris-educated designer’s collection won’t debut until November (Alice Temperley’s Target line comes first), so for now we’ll just have to ooh and aah over the pictures from the Target pressroom.

If you’re anything like me, you mostly venture into Lord & Taylor for a bonus gift event at your favorite makeup counter, an end-of-season sale on Ralph Lauren sweaters or a Christmas gift for your grandmother. But the mid-range retailer is looking to get you in stores and on their Web site more often with a $10 million image campaign. The overhaul is more about branding the store as a more modern destination for classic fashions than getting you to buy one specific item, according to WWD, and they swear they’re not trying to go too young and hip.
