Seen at left with a look from his Fall 2008 runway show, Chai is an Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation winner.

He joins fellow GO designers Jovovich-Hawk and Rogan Gregory, Target’s latest recruits, in offering new ranges this year.

Jovovich-Hawk’s collection is selling quickly, while Rogan Gregory’s collection, which could be limited to swimwear, is due around May. Chai will launch a limited-edition womenswear collection in early August.

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 10th, 2008

Gucci spring campaign.jpg

For the first time since 2005, Gucci will not be showing its cruise collection in New York.

Creative director Frida Giannini will show her Cruise 2009 collection in Rome this July. The show will be staged during Rome Fashion Week though it’s not likely to be on the official schedule.

It is hoped that the move will help publicize the 70th anniversary the newly redesigned Via Condotti Rome store.

The upgraded store held a grand reopening on February 5, the same day Gucci opened their new Fifth Avenue store here in New York – the largest Gucci store in the world.

Urban Outfitters plans new “space”

By Andrea Thatcher on March 7th, 2008

Urban Outfitters.jpg

While most retailers are struggling right now, Urban Outfitters seems to be coming up roses. Could it be that consumers are embracing unfinished hems, sloppy construction and faded fabrics to represent their economic troubles? I kid, I kid…

One of the store’s new pursuits is Space 1520. The new concept will include a large Urban Outfitters store, which will act as landlord to other boutiques. At the shopping mecca food, entertainment and beauty will be complimentary, and the building will open out into a farmers’ market.

While this concept may be expanded to other cities, something everyone can expect at their local UO is new designers. Miss Sixty, Fred Perry, and Insight were all recently introduced, and collaborations with Steven Alan, Charlotte Ronson, Corpus, Geren Ford, Paul & Joe Sister and Bing Bang are impending.

Avril Lavigne to lend her rock and roll style to Kohl’s

By Andrea Thatcher on March 5th, 2008

Avril Lavigne.jpg

WWD reports that Kohl’s Corp. has signed Avril Lavigne for the creation of a lifestyle brand for juniors called Abbey Dawn.

New Abbey Dawn fashion collections will rotate every 90 days beginning in July, if everything goes according to plan.

The collections are expected to blend punk and feminine styles for price points from $24 to $48. Clothing and jewelry will be in store first, with other product categories to follow.

It seems strange to go to the trouble of signing a celebrity and then not use their name, so it will be interesting to see how involved in Abbey Dawn Lavigne ends up being.

Jovovich-Hawk for Target GO International in stores now

By Andrea Thatcher on March 3rd, 2008

Jovovich.jpg

The Jovovich-Hawk collection for Target’s GO International initiative hit stores over the weekend, and it’s definitely worth a trip to the hip mass retailer.

There has got to be a dress for everyone in this collection, in store I counted at least 10, five of which I tried on and one of which I purchased. Thirteen of them are online. If you’re looking for your first spring dress or something for Easter this would be an excellent place to start.

There are a ton of trapeze dresses which hide a multitude of sins, but if you’re curvy, they may end up looking a little tent-like. A couple, like the crosshatch apron dress and corset front dress were a little too costumey. But perhaps this was because I’d just come from seeing The Other Boleyn Girl.

The dress prices range from $24.99 to $39.99. For more on the frock I chose, keep reading.

Oscar de la Renta to design bags for his O Oscar line

By Andrea Thatcher on February 25th, 2008

Oscar%20de%20la%20Renta.jpg

Oscar de la Renta has announced that he’ll be adding handbags to his lower priced O Oscar line available at department stores like Macys.

This comes after a few evening shoes were added to the collection this year, so it makes sense that the line would explore a full line of accessories like this.

“Handbags are an important accessory for the modern woman who is constantly on the go, adding both style and function to her look,” de la Renta told WWD.

We’ve been rather underwhelmed by the O Oscar clothing line, so lets hope the bags resemble those on the Oscar de la Renta fall runway, at left. Judging by the wholesale prices, the bags will probably retail from around $150 up.

If you’re interested in Oscar de la Renta’s main line, check out Coutorture’s exclusive look at some pieces from his fall 2008 collection.

First Madewell store is open for business in NYC, more to follow

By Andrea Thatcher on February 21st, 2008

Madewell.jpg

The J.Crew group’s first Madewell store in New York City’s Soho section was feted by a private reception last night, and three more stores are to follow this year.

That’s great news to those of us who have been intrigued by the internet catalog of sorts, where you have to place orders by phone.

Now New Yorkers can see the styles in person, as will shoppers in Annapolis Mall in Maryland, Lenox Square in Atlanta and Tysons Corner in McLean, Va. this spring and summer.

Piperlime branches out to bags – like the Orla Kiely classic shoulder bag

By Andrea Thatcher on February 20th, 2008

Orla.jpg

Piperlime, which has become a favorite online shoe source for many, is currently building quite a handbag collection. If you’re looking for something in a mid-range department store like Macy’s or Nordstrom and can’t find it, Piperlime is always a good bet.

This Orla Kiely classic shoulder bag, $170, seems to be following a counter trend to all the brights of spring. We’ve seen these more subdued colored, graphic prints at J.Crew as well, and they’re very tempting for the warmer months.

Hot off the runway: Lela Rose for Payless shoes

By Andrea Thatcher on February 19th, 2008

Shoes%20collage.jpg Click image to enlarge.

When Lela Rose sent her “sporty cocktail” fall 2008 collection down the runway at New York Fashion Week, she wasn’t just showing off the clothes. On the models feet were designs from Lela Rose’s fall 08 shoe collection for Payless, her fifth exclusive line for the mass retailer.

A tote bag given out at the show read “I Heart Shoes,” and Rose says she loves shoes “because even one new pair can bring life to any wardrobe.”

Most of the shoes in this collection should be under $45 and will be available in Payless stores in August.

Iman launches accessories collection

By Andrea Thatcher on February 19th, 2008

Iman%20global%20chic.jpg

Looks like HSN has found its answer to the popularity of Heidi Klum on QVC with Iman Global Chic.

Everything in the collection is under $130 and some pieces sold out in the first five minutes on air, so if you’re into the accessories inspired by Iman’s world travels you should act fast.

Looks like the two home shopping giants are going head to head. While Heidi Klum is clearly the higher-profile model right now, with her Project Runway hosting gig, she did run into that little trouble with Van Cleef and Arpels about her signature clover design. Let’s see if Iman can stay out of the hot seat.

Victoria’s Secret seven ways dress – it better come with lessons

By Andrea Thatcher on February 12th, 2008

seven%20ways%20dress%20collage.jpg

This Victoria’s Secret 7-in-1 curvy jersey dress could be the answer to many a “nothing to wear!” dilemma. If you can figure out how to fashion it, that is. There are instructions on the site, but kind of like all the articles telling us we could wear the same sarong every day of our vacation without anyone knowing, it might be easier read than done. It might take an evening at home practicing before you can master the seven different styles, but in great bright colors for spring, this dress might be worth the trouble. The best thing is that while it’s always sexy, you can make it appropriate for work, for a date, or the beach. That’s versatile.

Net-a-porter’s Halson exclusive sells out in 45 minutes

By Andrea Thatcher on February 7th, 2008

Halston%20sell%20out.jpg

The Halston runway items available on Net-a-Porter after the much-hyped show sold out in just 45 minutes after going live. It seems that eager customers couldn’t be deterred from getting their hands on two key dresses, despite what many, including our UK blogging buddies at Catwalk Queen, believed to be a rather lacklustre comeback collection. Around 25,000 shoppers logged onto the website to view the collection and other exclusive tidbits from the show. CQ bets some of those are headed for Ebay.
