We know we already gave you tons of Carmen Marc Valvo with our interview and backstage pics, but we thought you might like a little more. We know we can’t get enough. This will be our last New York Fashion Week video, but keep coming back for tons of London Fashion Week coverage from ourselves and U.K. sister site Catwalk Queen.
Pay attention to the colors above, because if the fall 08 runways are any indication, you’ll be wearing them in 9 months.
Everyone who sat down for the Temperley London show expecting a girlie, hippie-chic parade got an indication that all was not the same in the house of Alice Temperley when they skimmed the program notes which named early 1900s spy Mata Hari the new muse.
And when the models stomped out wearing black police caps and leather pants, everyone knew a new regime had entered the tents. “”I’m moving on from pretty and becoming stronger and sexier!” Temperley told Style.com’s Meenal Mistry.
Nanette Lepore sent a pretty, wearable, if a bit generic fall collection down the runway yesterday. Don’t get us wrong, we’d be over-the-moon to have a closet full of her girly dresses and feminine-detailed tweed suits and separates. But, they’re just not as thrilling on the runway where we expect a bit more innovation and creativity. Plus, being a more real life collection, some of her extreme high waist pants and skirts were very models only need apply.
Check out our video of the models’ final run at the Max Azria show last night. Look for Lily Donaldson and Chanel Iman amongst the mannequins and watch Lubov and Max Azria take their final bow.
In the show notes Azria referred to his fall 08 woman as “an independent visionary. She cleverly combines textures and volume, adding touches of sensuality through corsetry and silhouette defining belts. Pairing hand molded felt caps with tulle underskirts; she dresses and lives by her own rules.”
No staid stomping here, the models at Betsey Johnson bounce down the runway with balloons during their final turn. The fashions were classic Betsey with bright colors, whimsical prints, and a sexy silhouettes. It was surprising to see a lot of red, white, and blue which is typically a preppy look, but Betsey made it rock.

If the runway was a birthday party, the set was a beatnick bistro, as evidenced by “Beat Chick” scrawled across the show notes and Betsey staffers in black and white striped shirts. Keep reading for more videos!
There’s no better way to view Kati Stern’s stunning eveningwear for Venexiana than in motion, and so we’re super excited to offer this video. Please forgive that the camera girl is only 5’2″.
What’s even better is that the pieces that made this finale procession are really the strongest pieces in the collection. The glitz and glamour are poured on with Swarovski crystals, antique gold payette, sequins, and metallic threading.
With exactly four weeks to go until London Fashion Week (LFW) begins, our UK sister blog Catwalk Queen caught up with the very charming Paul Costelloe for an exclusive interview.
The Irish designer’s show officially opens LFW on February 10. At his London studio, Paul discusses what inspired him to create his forthcoming autumn/winter ’08-’09 collection and what we can expect to see on the catwalk.
“I don’t use real fur. I’d get shot… killed in the underground at Bond Street or something,” he joked with CQ’s Kimberley Foster. Click the image to play video.
TV Guide has a video of their photo shoot with Christina Applegate for the Dec. 24 double issue, which you can watch above. You get to see lots more of her gorgeous Zuhair Murad dress. Christina Applegate has worn the designer in the past, at the Tony’s, and so may have had something to do with the selection. The Lebanese designer has a large Middle Eastern following, and is best known in the US for designing Jenna Fischer’s dress for the recent Emmy’s (fortunately or not, your call).
Accessories designer Claudia Ciuti, best known for her stylish, ladylike shoes in amazing Italian materials, invited us into her showroom during New York Fashion Week to chat and check out her upcoming collection. The spring line puts a lot of focus on shine with pearlized, metalllic or metalized leathers and/or silicone finishes. The shoes are, as Claudia puts it “100% not made in China” and 100% made in Italy, where Claudia grew up, learned the family shoe business and went to fashion school. Her family connections give her access to the best tanneries, heel makers, and manufacturers in Italy, with whom she can collaborate on the best colors and leathers, and exchange ideas. “I can walk into these places and learn the newest leathers and finishes and even make modifications,” she said. Continue reading for a look at shoes from the spring line and more from Claudia.
Catwalk Queen’s Gemma Cartwright was lucky enough to sit down with designer Matthew Williamson before London Fashion Week at the Canon “We Speak Image” event. Williamson is celebrating his 10 year anniversary and so is returning to London after five years showing in New York. While we’ll miss having him stateside, we’re excited for all of CQ’s exclusive London Fashion Week coverage which we’ll of course be keeping you updated on here at ShinyStyle.
Since Caravan brings a variety of designer fashions to their customers at their homes, hotels, or offices with Caravan Mobile, it seems only fitting that they bring a variety of designers from around the world to their fashion week presentation. It was a real change of pace and exciting opportunity to see a lot of different designer’s pieces – like Vivienne Westwood, Social Atelier, Loomstate, Edun and more – all in one show. Plus, it was one of my only chances to see menswear this week, and I saw an actress from two of my favorite teen dramas! Keep reading to find out who!
Flowing dresses and water colors were a big part of the Tadashi Shoji show, following the designers show notes quoting Jacques Cousteau and referencing the “infinite seas that have long nourished daydreams,” but these pieces weren’t really the highlights of the collection for this viewer. I much preferred the darker hughed pieces, and the stunning lace dress at center, left, in particular. Check after the jump for more pictures and show video.
Mercury Style Award winner Nili Lotan presented her Spring ’08 collection last night to an impressive crowd in the Chelsea area. After being picked up in our chauffered Mercury car, we met up with blogger Julia Coney from All About the Pretty. We enjoyed mingling and free samples of Sunsilk products before the presentation.
Lotan’s fabrics were lush and the silhouettes very sexy. Born in Isreal, the show notes say that Lotan expresses her sensibility to the region throughout her work, incorporating related design elements. She prides herself on pure design, expert tailoring, and rich materials. One of the most unique aspects of the show was her pairing of traditional suiting elements with more casual pieces, sometimes even swimsuits. It might not be the most wearable style, but it adds variety to the traditional separates and dresses on the runway.
Fashionistas frightened by the return to more structured fashions for fall can breathe a sigh of relief come spring. And that breath will be easier to take since their diaphragm will once more be released from high-waisted pants and slim, constricting pencil skirts. Spring continued to be a season of voluminous, flowy tunics-cum-dresses, but in a really fresh, modern silhouette at the Form fashion show at The Yard and Gallery at the Soho Grand. While the shapes were innovative, the fabrics and textures were a bit one-note and it would have been nice to see a bit more variety. The ethereal silvery-ivory-white might have been even more powerful if contrasted with some other colors, but it at least shows daring and a cohesive vision from designer Jerry Tam.
