Top ten alternatives to Henry Holland tights

Comments (1)

Now I know I should stay away from tights and brightly coloured ones at that, after my past fashion faux pas, which I admitted to you last week.

However, this week, we couldn't resist telling you about Pixie Geldof's new fashion look, bought on by flamboyan designer Henry Holland.

The up and coming fashion fellow has designed a collection of hosiery for Pretty Polly, which launched this week at Selfridges. And celebs, including Pixi Geldof and Agyness deyn are already covering their pins in his designs made from sheer and opaque fabrics.

These include his trademark purple, with a cream rhinestone-encrusted band around the thigh and mid calf, and a style he's christened the "moc stock" which looks like a pair of stockings but is in fact a far more practical pair of tights.

The tights are a leg hugging £10 per pair. They are available from Selfridges now and nationwide from September.

However, for those that can't get to the store or can't wait that long we've put together a range of other alternatives, after all we can't deny any longer that the tights season will be soon upon us, and dusting out last season's ones might bring a few shocks.

Following the internet leak of the Anna Sui for Target lookbook last month, Target execs have been quick to backpedal on any suggestion that the range has been inspired by Gossip Girl.

"One of Target's top executives got nervous about being that closely associated with the show, given the [debauchery] its characters get into," a source told the New York Daily News.

Comparisons are being drawn between Anna Sui's previous collections, and her forthcoming range for Target. The designer has already cited Gossip Girl as inspiration for her Go International line, but clearly her past runways have also provided a good start. Four dresses from her 2006 and 2007 collections have been modified for her new retail range which is set to land in store on September 13. Most of the items will sell for under $50 (woot!) click here to check out the lookbook.

A war of words, or names rather, has erupted between Katy Perry and Australian designer, Katie Perry. The trouble began when Katie Perry, who runs a luxury loungewear label, decided to trademark her birth name. Lawyers acting on behalf of Katy Perry are opposing the application, despite a difference in spelling. They sent a letter to the designer asking her to stop trading.

Claire DanesWhile at the CFDA Awards on Monday night, Claire Danes let slip that she will be wearing a Narciso Rodriguez gown for her forthcoming wedding to Hugh Dancy.

The actress attended the awards with Rodriguez and revealed their plans to create her bridal dress.

"He's making it. I get weepy... more emotional than I was expecting," she said of the process. "I'm collaborating a little bit, but I'm just trusting him implicitly. I'm offing my ideas, but they always pale in comparison to his."

"She's an extraordinary woman inside and out," Rodriguez gushed of his friend. "That always comes through. You can't hide it. I just try to make her look more beautiful."

Aww... isn't it all just one big love-fest?

Last night's CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Awards in New York attracted the cream of the crop from our design pond, but only a few could take home a gong.

Rodarte's Kate and Laura Mulleavy were the toast of the evening, winning the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award. They brought along a very happy Kirsten Dunst as their date.

Proenza Schouler were named Accessory Designer of the Year. While a very confident Alexander Wang was awarded the Swarovski Award for Womenswear.

For the first time the Popular Award was given to Ralph Lauren. Special honors included Anna Sui for the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, and Marc Jacobs for the International Award. Check out a full list of the winners after the jump...

Is Dancing with the Stars about to get an injection of style?

The rumor mill claims that Vera Wang has signed on to star in the next season of TV's celebrity dance show, due to premiere September 21.

As we all know, Vera trained as a figure skater before embarking on a long career in fashion. She even competed in the 1968 US National Championships and tried out for the Olympics in the same year. Later, she designed outfits for Nancy Kerrigan and Michelle Kwan.

I wonder if we'll get to see some of her moves on the dance floor. In any case, she is bound to have the best costumes in the competition.

emmawatson_burberry_aw0910_2.jpgOur British blogger pals at Catwalk Queen have the lowdown on Emma Watson's new campaign pics for Burberry.

The Harry Potter star has made her modelling debut for the label's autumn/winter 2009-10 campaign alongside four very handsome young men.

"Having known and admired the lovely Emma Watson for quite some time, she was the obvious choice for this campaign," said creative director, Christopher Bailey. "I felt [she] would be strong enough to hold the campaign as the only girl, and I loved the idea of her being surrounded by these young, cool British guys."

zacposen_headshouldershot.jpgIt was bound to happen sooner or later, and now it seems that a Facebook-inspired collection is about to hit the runway.

Zac Posen has hinted that his forthcoming spring 2010 collection has been influenced by the popular social networking site.

"[It's] everything that a New York fashion editor is not looking for," he said. "There's definitely fashion editors who get really bothered by the fact that I'm out and about and promoting my work. It's not what they desire as 'cool,' or what they think is interesting, and it probably de-myths their own existence."

Proving further how much designers are utilizing these outlets, Stella McCartney, has just joined the Twittersphere. Follow her updates here.

The nominees of this year's CFDA Awards have shown off their designs in the latest CFDA Journal. Instead of using models, Marc Jacobs, Jason Wu, Alexander Wang and the rest of the nominees have modelled their own creations as part of Diane von Furstenberg's push to celebrate their work. I particularly like Marc sporting a pair of rabbit ears he designed for Louis Vuitton, and which have been made famous by Madonna at this year's Met Gala.

mariosschwab_confirmedhalston.jpgBlogged by Catwalk Queen...

It is official! After months of swirling rumours, our own Marios Schwab has landed the gig of creative director at Halston. He replaces Marco Zanini, who left after just two seasons.

Confirmed via WWD early this morning, he will take over the label from July 1. Despite its recent troubles following its revival in 2007, the brand will also shortly launch the Halston Heritage collection, featuring reproductions of archival Halston pieces (see below the cut).

Schwab caught the eye of CEO Bonnie Takhar during his spring '09 show in London. "He used a lot of jersey in the collection in a very modern way. The silhouettes were also very fluid, and we thought they had a very modern Halston interpretation," she said.

A new destination, and a whole new era was on the cards for the Chanel Cruise 2010 presentation yesterday. Set in the charming surroundings of Lido Resort, Venice, the show used a boardwalk as its runway and deckchairs for its seating arrangement. The collection itself was drenched in summer days during the 1930s, dotted with sailor dresses, wide brimmed hats, striped knitted shorts and short curly bobs. Karl Lagerfeld was directly inspired by Venetian high-society, namely Marchesa Casati and Peggy Guggenheim, an American art collector whose palazzo is home to Italy's most important collection of twentieth-century art.

"The parties tonight are great, but they don't compare to three days ago, when I sat by the Seine on my own and smoked cigarillos. It's my favorite thing in the world. I smoke this brand La Paz -- they're cheap but it's what I always buy. And then, I peed into the Seine. It's the best thing I did all week."

In a bid to rescue his reputation, Oscar de la Renta made a rare appearance on The View Monday to discuss *those* Michelle Obama comments. The designer has received backlash over his criticisms of Michelle Obama's wardrobe, including wearing a cardigan to meet the Queen. "She's entitled to wear anything she wants to. I may have chosen my words badly, and I regret it," he said.

When Barbara Walters asked if he was jealous, he replied by saying: "Of course I'm jealous. Listen, to dress the First Lady is a tremendous privilege. I'm jealous if I'm not dressing every single woman." Click play on video above to watch.
