oscar_arrivals131_wenn5440112.jpgWe all know what it's like to have a last-minute outfit crisis (read about my own dress failures here), but few of us have the pressure of the Oscars to contend with.So we felt for poor Anna Kendrick when we heard that she had a wardrobe disaster only a few days before the cermony.

The Up in the Air star, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, revealed that she was forced to find a whole new outfit this week, when her special couture dress failed to live up to expectations. "There was another dress that was being made," Kendrick said. "The designer will remain nameless... It was not for me. It was blue."

Had she stuck with the original dress she would have been in good company, with Mariah Carey and Maggie Gyllenhaal among the stars who also chose blue. But as it was, we thought the actress was one of the most memorable attendees, picking upon this season's nude trend with her beautiful blush-pink chiffon gown. Not too bad for something you threw on at the last minute, Anna...

oscar_arrivals_019_wenn5440213.jpgShe may have had an uncharacteristically girlie moment in her short white frock at the BAFTAs, but tonight Kristen Stewart returned to her vampish roots with this dramatic satin number. Earlier this week we guessed that the Twilight saga star might opt for black (see us proved right here), though her recent penchant for mini dresses had us predicting she'd go for an LBD, not this floor-sweeping slice of old-school Hollywood.

We were also pleased to see that the Twilight saga star had put a little more polish into her look this time round (or, to go straight for the jugular, she'd actually washed her hair). And is that a smile we spy?

In the space of one awards season, the actress seems to have grown from sulky teen into a fully-fledged starlet. From Bella Swann to red carpet swan... top marks.

oscar_arrivals148_wenn5440122.jpgIt was a micro-trend at last year's awards, and this year even more stars are saying 'I do' to dresses in white, ivory and sugared-almond shades. Whether it's a nod to this winter's unseasonably snowy weather, or a series of not-so-subtle hints to noncommittal boyfriends, bridal looks were all over tonight's red carpet.

Best actress nominee Sandra Bullock pulled it off like a true leading lady, with exquisite beaded vintage fabric and sweet pink lips, while Up in the Air star Anna Kendrick was a vision in palest pink.

A little less successful, however, was Amanda Seyfried's meringue - we can only assume the actress seems to have took reference from her starring role in musical wedding romp Mamma Mia when choosing this Armani Prive gown. The quilted satin fabric saves it from true Princess Barbie territory, but alongside so many chic column gowns and flirty ruffles it still comes off a little like the lady your Granny puts on top of her loo roll.

wenn5440194.jpgWe predicted that British newcomer Carey Mulligan would win out in the style stakes tonight, and we're pleased to say that she's filling us with patriotic pride.

Sporting the same bleached blonde pixie crop she unveiled at the BAFTAs last month, the star of An Education took to the red carpet in a black strapless frock by her go-to designer, Prada. From a distance the effect was predictably chic, with its sweetheart neckline and full skirt, but on closer inspection Carey's quirkier side made an appearance, as she revealed that her glittering dress was embellished with tiny metal keys and pairs of scissors. No, honestly. Like an exceptionally well-dressed boy scout, she seems to have arrived in the couture equivalent of a Swiss army knife.

We're hoping the 24-year-old will scoop the Best Actress statue tonight, but if not perhaps she'll find another calling as an unofficial seamstress. And if she needs to take down a rival, at least she's well armed...

Oscar_Arrivals214_wenn5440164.jpgWe suspected there might be a few red dresses tonight, and Sigourney Weaver has proved us right by turning out in crimson chiffon.

The Avatar star has ticked a lot of trend boxes by opting for a grecian-style, one-shouldered Lanvin number, with jewellery by Neil Lane and shoes by Jimmy Choo. The colour makes a change from the predominant hue of her dystopian movie, which is nominated for Best Picture. "I'm in red tonight, but I'm still blue underneath", she joked.

Oscars 2010: Mariah Carey in Valentino

oscar_arrivals146_wenn5440120.jpgWell who would've thought it, Mariah's gone all demure on us. The Precious star has kept her trademark cleavage under wraps tonight (by her standards), with an elegant midnight blue gown by Valentino. The capped-sleeve style was seen on a number of guests tonight, including Carey's co-star Mo'Nique, who also looked radiant in blue.

But Ms Carey hasn't disappointed on the bling front, accessorising with jewels by Chopard and a chunky statement watch. "I don't usually wear one, because I don't care what time it is," she told Sky1's Angela Griffin. "I run on Mariah time".

The star later caught her bling on American presenter Ryan Seecrest as she cruised down the red carpet - in Mariah time, that translates as embarrassment o'clock.

Grammy Awards trend: Gold

Comments (0)

There was a colourful array of frocks at this year's Grammy Awards but one shade that made a huge appearance was gold.

Colbie Caillat donned a dark shade of this colour appearing in a long beaded and organza gown complete with a Jennifer Aniston style split, for her red carpet look, while Kathy Griffin sported a not so different style in a lighter shade.

However others, including Keri Hilson took the trend to a completely different level opting for metallic hues over the traditional red carpet sparkles. This was the same in Country Collaboration With Vocals winner Carrie Underwood's case, who showed off her award wearing a dark gold metallic frock.

Irish rocker Imelda May also showed she'd been struck by the midas touch opting for a gold mid length frock for her performance at the event as did R&B singer Ke$ha.
Although we're sure you'll agree some pulled off this look far better than others.

It's not a nice time to be in work. The snow's playing havoc with travelling and lunchtime trips to the shops and post Christmas blues are not making things much better. However we've stumbled across something that may brighten up your lunch break, especially for those who have always fancied themselves as fashion designers or want a copy of their favourite celebrity dress.

StyleShake.com lets you design your own clothing, which is then made and delivered to you in 10 days. Design your dress or top and then choose the fabric and fastenings. Yes it's that simple.

And it's good news for those of us who are in between sizes or who have trouble choosing between the standard Small, Medium and Large that many online stores offer as you can order a garment to fit your own measurements.

Now this site isn't new, it's been around for a few years, but the company has just added a range of new tools to help you get that perfect work outfit.

These include new 'design parts', which we think are perfect for banishing those back to work blues and will inspire people to create fabulous new work wear to get some office edge. Included in these are the new pussy bow tie detail that gives a modern take on the classic shirt, and a turned back cuff that adds a tailored element to tops, dresses and shirt-dress designs.

Prices for these clothes are around the same as you would expect to pay on the highstreet, so we say, get online and start designing now. However, we warn you, it's addictive, so make sure your boss doesn't catch you doing this while your meant to be working.

Keep reading because next month we'll be reviewing the site to see how good it really is.

Megan pink.jpgMany designers would be pleased just to have a well known actress grace their advertising campaigns but Armani has gone that extra step when it comes to its model Megan Fox.

The designer has created an exact replica of the star's Giorgio Armani Prive pink dress, which she wore to the Russian premier of Transformers 2 just in time for the Christmas season.

We also think the strapless number resembles the frock Sarah Jessica Parker wore to the Did You Hear about The Morgans? Premier.

We understand why the brand would want to go all out for the actress who replaced Victoria Beckaham as the face of Armani Lingerie for 2010 a few months ago and we think she'll make an amazing model for the brand.

However, we wish the designer would try and please us too by making his designs that little bit more affordable. £600 is just a little bit too much by our shopping standards unless of course it miraculously turns us into a Megan Fox look-a-like.

British Fashion Awards - Red Carpet Arrivals

Celebrities, models and fashion designers were out in their droves last night to celebrate the 25th annual British Fashion Awards.

The event, which we we've been excited about since we reported the shortlist a few weeks ago, took place in London's Royal Courts of Justice and this year played host to more British designers than ever before.

As we would expect, it was also attended by Kate Moss, Victoria Beckham and Claudia Schiffer as well as one of our favourite designers Matthew Williamson.

Christopher Bailey the Collection of the Year award, while model de jour Georgia Jagger scooped Model of the Year and there was also good news for Kate Moss who won the public voted London 25 Award.

There was also happiness from Grace Coddington who was given the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator and Katie Hillier was crowned Accessory Designer of the Year.

We also think a huge congratulations are in order for Burberry, which won Designer Brand of the year and Christopher Bailey who was awarded British Designer of the Year.

During his acceptance speech, Bailey also revealed that Burberry would display creations during February's London Fashion Week: "London is our home and our global headquarters, and we are thrilled to be showing again in this, our magnificent and creative city," he said.

We've been keeping an eye on Cheryl's X-Factor look for a while now and we're sure you'll agree she's doing very well at keeping her reputation as a style icon.

She looked stunning in her custom made Giles Deacon pink bodycon dress, which fitted into the WHAM! theme night perfectly and would look great as a Christmas outfit.

She also bought home the Minnie Mouse bow look, sported by many a celeb back in the 80s.

If you want some more of these style ideas then check out our Minnie Mouse inspired looks gallery here.

In the meantime we've put together a range of pink dresses similar to Cheryl's.

X Factor: Get Cheryl's look for less

cherylcole-2009nov14.jpg We think Cheryl Cole (or her stylist) must have been looking at our gallery of Strictly-inspired dresses, because on Saturday's X Factor live show she was wearing a sequined dress just like some of the ones we featured.

Of course, Cheryl's was Alexander Wang, not Dorothy Perkins, but at least we can get a similar look at a price that suits our budget. Cheryl's navy blue sequined dress is really wearable, and she looked great in it on Saturday, especially since it was a bit less experimental than some of her other outfits so far. Alexander Wang has had a really great year in 2009, so expect to see a lot more of his designs on celebrities in 2010...

Find a similar purple sequined number (minus the ruching) at www.dorothyperkins.com.

Smart Christmas outfits for posh parties

Comments (0)

We've been inspired by the outfits Lara wore in her Vogue photoshoot and it's really given us a feel for Christmas party outfits.

At some point in the month, or even perhaps New Years Eve, we'll have to put on more than a pair of jeans to go to a party, especially if its a big posh do. But we know finding an outfit that doesn't look too mumsy or too over the top can be hard.

We've therefore put together a gallery of smart Christmas party outfits, which will have you looking like the stylish belle of the ball, and remember, you don't have to wear a long frock to look the posh part either.

Lady GaGa poses in bizarre Hello Kitty outfits

Comments (1)

lADY g2.jpgAs you might already know, we're huge fans of Hello Kitty here at ShinyStyle, but there are just some lines that shouldn't be crossed when it comes to our favourite furball. We're not sure if you'll agree but we think Lady GaGa may have just crossed it.

The popstar, known for her funky and off the wall style, teamed up with photographers Markus Klinko and Indrani and donned a range of unique outfits to celebrate Hello Kitty's 35th Birthday

Of the many, this included a jewel-embellished shell bra and fishnet tights with a Hello Pussy purse slung around her waist. She can also be seen with a giant red Hello Kitty bow against a gold backdrop. Hmm, don't swap your career in singing for one in styling Lady GaGa.

fc dress.jpgLondon Fashion Week has a lot to answer for.

Not only does it mean we need to revamp our wardrobes with the latest designs but now it seems we have to also make a dash to the shops.

To celebrate 25 years of London Fashion Week French Connection has designed a limited edition colour of their best selling Bonnie Cotton dress for only £25.

Judging by French Connection's price line this is an absolute bargain. Especially when other colour dresses in the same range cost £110.

And now for the bad news. Only 1500 dresses have been made and once they're gone, they're, well, gone. The limited edition will be selling in selected stores nationwide and online from Monday 14th September. Better get queuing from the weekend then.
