Zac Posen Spring/Summer 2012
Lovers of grand, lush eveningwear should get ready to gasp and flutter their hands as we take a look at Zac Posen’s new Spring/Summer 2012 collection, which was showcased at New York Fashion Week this Sunday. The result of another season’s toil over a new collection was a mouth-watering collection of day-dresses and evening gowns which were evocative of old 1940s Hollywood starlets.
What we love about Zac Posen’s work is that he obviously has a woman’s femininity in mind when he designs his gowns – these are designs that would leave the wearer feeling beautiful and special, with a veritable array of dresses with form-fitting dresses that hug in all the right places but artfully skim over the main problem areas. With off-the-shoulder sweetheart necklines, fitted busts and huge silk ruffles, it’s no wonder that Zac Posen is every celebrity’s red-carpet favourite.
As usual some of the gowns are truly spectacular, our absolute favourite being the collection’s black chiffon fishtail gown with an absolutely stunning black chiffon hem that we’re hoping we’ll see a celebrity wearing very, very soon. There’s definitely a darkly glamorous goth vibe to the gowns, as Posen has opted for deep navy, black and wine-red chiffons for an incredibly dramatic effect. The styling for the show was picture-perfect too, with the models wearing absolutely pristine finger waves in their hair and costume jewellery.
A grand salute to Zac Posen and his genius Spring/Summer gowns – ShinyStyle bloody loves ya.

Elizabeth Olsen has revealed that her two biggest style inspirations are the actresses Diane Keaton and Katharine Hepburn.
Elizabeth, who is the younger sister of the famous Olsen twins, has recently been popping up on our style radar in a mixture of vintage-style maxis and European fashion. But it’s not her older sisters that she looks to for inspiration – it’s the icons of the silver screen.
She said: “I always love Diane Keaton and Katherine Hepburn. [Mary-Kate and Ashley always tell me] to always feel comfortable. Their advice is just like, kind of focus on your work and not let anything else come between you and what you want to do and who you are. We don’t actually talk about work much, but they’re just great people and supportive and inspiring and creative.”
For those who don’t know, Katharine Hepburn commandeered masculine dressing in her era and was one of the first women to publicly wear trousers as a fashion statement, while Diane Keaton is famous for her bohemian role as Woody Allen’s love in Annie Hall. Elizabeth has good taste.

Keira Knightley rocked a perfect off-duty look in a chic navy shirt dress with vintage sunnies and tan leather accessories
One of the best things about glittery A-list events such as the annual Venice Film Festival is that we get to drool over all the stars’ red carpet outfits – and their off duty ones too. We were particularly taken with a snap we saw of Keira Knightley in a sweet, smart-casual navy blue shirt dress – oh so chic and ladylike. We love love love.
The 40s-style dress worked perfectly with Keira’s slender figure and cropped wavy bob. She looked like an old Hollywood star out on her way to lunch somewhere glamorous. The star teamed the classic, full-skirted shirt dress with leather accessories for an understated look, cinching the dress in at the waist with a skinny tan belt and fringed brown leather loafer heels by way of chic footwear. Rounding off the look was a simple gold necklace and some vintage-look sunglasses. Perfection!
We had a sly little looksie for pieces on the high street that you can find to copy Keira’s style – we’re completely in love with Jaeger’s quirky umbrella-print shirt dress which has a similar classic, ladylike vibe to Keira’s dress. We were also pleased to find a pair of tan loafer heels at River Island that are almost identical to the actress’ – get to the gallery above right now and check it out.

Peacock in Paradise Brooch

Donna Karan Autumn/Winter 2011
I’m a very happy bunny right now, as one of my absolute favourite looks is going to be totally massive this season – and that is full on old Hollywood detective-movie 1940s glamour, complete with jewels and furs. Today I’m concentrating on the jewels – some beautiful antique-look costume jewellery can make even the simplest of outfits glamorous and on-trend.
Designers such as Gucci, Donna Karan and Marc Jacobs were all over the look on the catwalk, teaming sumptuous furs and nipped-at-the-waist tweed with darkly glittering gems and jewels to match the models’ lips. For costume jewellery, I’m a massive fan of the site
GlitzySecrets, whose jewellery designs look like they should cost a thousand pounds per piece – but they don’t, as you can get a piece of timeless vintage-inspired jewellery for £15.
Whether you’re a lover or not of a head-to-toe vintage look, it doesn’t matter as some simple 1940s-style costume jewellery can make a simple black maxi dress or a skirt and top look dramatic – and make an outfit look a lot more expensive than it actually is. Along with GlitzySecret’s beautiful jewellery, it’s also worth checking charity shops as they often sell lovely second-hand pieces.
Check out the gallery above for our favourite bits and bobs from GlitzySecrets.

Marc Jacobs included hard pill-box hats for vintage mystery in his Autumn/Winter 2011 show
If you’re looking forward to planning your new A/W wardrobe then buying a few new accessories is a great place to start – and Mr. Marc Jacobs’ recent Autumn/Winter ’11 with it’s prim skirt-suits and 194os pillbox hats have got us coming over all wistful for an era we were never in. Luckily stores are already cottoning on to wartime-style fashions, so it’s time to get nostalgic with some vintage inspired headgear.
Hats are a huge part of this year’s Autumn/Winter dressing, as the season’s fashion heroine is a mysterious femme fatale who knows her stuff about tailoring – a good dramatic hat can add mystery and old Hollywood glamour to any outfit.
There are a few good pillbox-style pieces already available on the high street, though we reckon there will be more to come. If you can’t find a style at the moment that tickles your fancy you could also opt for a fascinator headband – lots of high street stores such as Lipsy and RockNRose are already making bands complete with large flower detailing and veils.
Check out the gallery above for our favourite pillbox hats and fascinators.

Lady Gaga was spotted in NYC rocking the new season's 40s-inspired ladylike trend in a houndstooth skirt suit with matching accessories - we've never seen the singer look so demure
We were happily surprised to see this photograph of Madam Gaga’s take on Autumn/Winter’s 1940s-inspired ladylike trend (pictured above) – she’s been seen spotted out in NYC in a head-to-toe houndstooth Salvatore Ferragamo ensemble nipped in at the waist for a vintage feel. When the first lady of quirky fashion is all over a trend, you know it’s time to get in on the action.
Naturally we wouldn’t recommend you tackle the trend in quite the same way as Gaga, who unsurprisingly added a few of her bizarre fashion twists to make the look her own. She may be able to wear houndstooth sunglasses, but thats because she has minders to walk her everywhere – attempt that particular accessory and you will walk into a wall. The rest of it though is a solid look, and we’ve compiled a gallery of our favourite affordable ladylike pieces on the high street.
This trend is all about the feminine silhouette and opulent fabrics such as silk and brocade – perfect for girls who have a good waist. Belted tweed blazers, silk pussybow blouses and ladylike costume jewellery are an easy way to wear the trend and could be worn either in the day or the night.
What do you think of Gaga’s new look? Do you love it, or prefer her more risqué style? Let us know in the comments below, and check out the gallery above so that you can steal her style.
