Paris Haute Couture Week: Chanel

By Andrea Petrou on January 26th, 2011

By Emily Borrett.

All the hardcore fashion lovers which have flocked to Paris Couture Week for some extraordinary sights were waiting with baited breath yesterday to see what Euro-genius Karl Lagerfeld had come up with this time for the Chanel runway. And when your past shows have featured models tumbling sexily around in a barn full of hay and girls stomping around a melting ice-cap in swathes of fur, you’ve got a lot to live up to. Luckily Karl didn’t let us down.

There were plenty of the timeless silhouettes that we’ve come to love and expect from France’s most beloved luxury brand – but this time, there were a few wry twists that let us know that Lagerfeld doesn’t intend to play it safe when it comes to design. The classic black-and-white fringed, distressed tweeds that have been so en vogue in Chanel’s designs were given an update by being teamed with tougher fabrics – a classic example being the beautifully cut monochrome blazer that was sent down the catwalk teamed up with a pair of sheeny black sequined trousers and flat shoes. More bad girl than Parisian lady-in-waiting, non?

Pastel colours were also a key theme for the brand this season, with funnel-necked little jackets and tailored trousers being shown in shades of sugared violet and pale peach. An unexpected turn for the fashion house, which has always favoured its’ fabrics in classic black, greys and whites, but by golly it works. Adorned in crystal fastenings and shining trims, we hope that Karl’s new approach to outerwear will translate onto the high-street later this year. Could pastels overtake camel?

Mr. Lagerfeld has clearly also been taking peeks at the likes of Marchesa lately, as we saw more than a hint of the frou-frou in his dressier designs. Babydoll silhouttes, midi-hemlines and puff-sleeves were given the extra fashion oomph with an absolutely insane explosion of gathered, ruffled chiffon which gave the eveningwear a playful, princess-esque feel. We’re not sure if us normies could pull it off, but if Asos reproduce a forty-quid version then we’ll damn well give it a try.

Our verdict on the Chanel show? Karl Lagerfeld has pulled yet another rabbit out of his Swarovski-encrusted hat. He must have a whole field of them by now.

The five trends to carry you into Spring/Summer this year

Florals on the catwalk at Erdem

The rubbish, typical British drizzle and winds that we’re all having to endure at the moment may be making us all feel a little bit like there’s no point even thinking about our Spring/Summer wardrobes. But the beautiful clothes that everyone is predicting we’ll be wearing later this year are so special, that maybe we should stiffen our upper lips like true  Brits and start planning for the marginally less dire weather ahead. Here are the top 5 trends that you should take into consideration this year when you’re hitting the shops.

1. Florals

If you followed the many Fashion Weeks that happened at the end of last year, you’ll be able to remember with wistfulness the beautiful lace-swathed jamboree that was the Erdem SS11 catwalk. From their embroidered white lace dresses with red flowers creeping up the hemline to their floral patterned shirts and shorts, flowers were absolutely everywhere and they’ve never been prettier. Head-to-toe florals may be a difficult look for us mere mortals to rock in our daily routine, so keep it understated – team a floral skirt or pair of summer shorts with a simple blouse for a garden-party perfect look.

2. Bold colour

Forget floaty and ethereal for this summer’s maxi – German designer Jil Sander showed us that the best way to rock a sweeping floor-length this year will be with a vibrant splash of colour. Everyone was talking about her collection at fashion week, and with good reason too – Sander showed us a fresh and modern take on the hottest length to be seen in at the moment. As for how you wear it? Exactly how it was seen on the catwalk. All you need to work a JS-esque maxi is a classic white tee and a slash of neon lipstick.

3. Bright whites

While cutting-edge fashion house Alexander Wang has often been in favour of moody black clothes and leather in the past, at this last NYFW all the models were sent down the catwalk in refreshing tones of white and celadon that made us all go – ahhhhh. We’ve already heard about the phenomenon of the little white dress, now get ready for the little white everything. This spring it’s all going to be about a clean, fresh look and white is the perfect colour to opt for.

4. Frills and ruffles

Sugar, spice and everything nice – it’s not hard to see why so many celebrities favour designs by Marchesa for fancy events at the moment. Last year it was about body-con, velvet and a very grungey aesthetic, but this year things seem to get a whole lot prettier as we’re told that ruffles, embellishment and peekaboo lace are going to be the only look to be seen wearing when you’re out on the town. With their sheer lace harem pants, embellished necklines and floaty, ruffled voluminous dresses, Marchesa are the designer to emulate.

5. Ladylike

Louis Vuitton started it all off with their now iconic A/W last year, where it was all about nipped in waists, modest hemlines and 1950s silhouettes – everyone went mad for his full-skirted dresses. If you’re wondering how to take their sexy-but-prim aesthetic into the new year, then look no further than Valentino. Hemlines crept up a little (summer is too hot for a midi) to flutter at the knee prettily and necklines were modestly high. But if that sounds a little too safe for you, it isn’t. They kept things from being matronly by using sheer, floaty materials which still hinted at the skin and body beneath – a perfect look for those big and small this year. If you’re looking to copy Valentino this year, keep an eye out for sheer, high-necked blouses and tailored skirts.

Milan Fashion Week highlights: Missoni

Missoni SS2011

Italian knitwear label Missoni is one of my all-time favourite designers, so it was a treat to have a look through the Spring/Summer 2011 collection and see what they’d come up with this time. And what they came up with was super-fun.

Somebody said (I don’t remember who) a couple of years back, “it’s impossible to be unhappy in a poncho”.  Well, I don’t know how it would feel to actually wear one the Aztec-printed, eyewateringly bright ponchos that got sent down Missoni’s catwalk (I’d probably just explode) , but I sure felt pretty happy just looking at them. With lots of Milan Fashion Week shows churning out plenty of euro-glamour and not much else, it was lovely to see that Missoni weren’t taking themselves too seriously.

The iconic brand showed us exactly why they are famous for their knits and use of colour, using what looked like an awful lot of inspirati0n from Native American and Mexican textiles for the collection, which proved to be a happy poncho jamboree. Perhaps a little silly, yes, but there was also a lot to wear for those of you who don’t fancy completely channelling the Speedy Gonzales look, with beaded midriff-baring tops and little miniskirts in the same prints that were far more wearable and easier to integrate into your wardrobe.

I for one think it’s great to see designers having so much fun with their clothes. After all, that’s what dressing up is about – fun. I might dig out my childhood poncho now.

LFW highlights: Christopher Kane

By Andrea Petrou on September 20th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

Christopher Kane showed us at Fashion Week today just exactly why he’s one of the country’s favourite current designers. The fashion world’s only just getting over his disgustingly gorgeous, flower-embroidered leather collection and then BOOM! - along comes SS2011 to make us all dribble and ache with clothes lust.

Kane’s choice of colour in his designs have all been a bit “femme fatale” and gothy of late, with lots of wine reds and dark sumptuous leathers, but he seems to have revisited old collections for inspiration for this coming Spring. For those of you that remember, his explosion onto the fashion scene was a riot of traffic-stopping neon brights, sheer lace and as much bodycon as a girl can handle. It was the one good thing to come out of 2006′s “New Rave” phase – everybody wanted one of those dresses. Now Kane’s gone back to having fun with colours similar to those that we first saw on his catwalks, but with a more grown-up twist. Instead of tight crotch-skimming dresses that are only suitable for giraffes and the under-21s, hemlines are soft, floaty and just above the knee. Very ladylike and true to the current 1960s trend – but in eye-watering neon fabrics, it’s far from old-fashioned.

If I have my way I’ll be wearing his dresses to tea parties next Spring. Which I probably won’t. But a girl can dream.
