Early 60′s revival continues – Banana Republic launches Mad Men range with MM designer Janie Bryant

By Ashley on March 4th, 2013

Banana-Republic-Mad-Men-Clothing-LineBeing a devoted MM fan and in desperate need for series six to come into my life, the news of a Mad Men inspired clothes range hitting our shores courtesy of Banana Republic (-or at least the US for now) presented fantastic promise – almost as good as the real deal. Everyone likes to own a piece of the action of something they truly love and consider a masterpiece in it’s own right. When it involves iconic and razor sharp tailoring and polished silhouettes, I’m definitely in the buying zone. And hearing that the clothing range is actually developed in collaboration with the series costume designer Janie Bryant, well – it doesn’t get much more of a promise than that!

Questions like: Am I going to recognise who this outfit is inspired by? Which characters’ style would be my ultimate dream outfit? (hmm – still torn between whether it’d be delectable Joan or doing-it-for-the girls Peggy), or I wonder will it include lots of beautiful accessories and all important finishes and detailing that really capture the period? spring to mind. So with all this souped up hope and in need of a MM shot of pure pleasure and indulgence I clicked onto Banana Republic’s Mad Men range which frankly left me feeling a touch dissatisfied (not something I’d normally associate with a certain Mr Draper).

This number is definitely the best of the collection – a silk dress with a striking cactus flower repeat print, with buttoned cuffs and tie front belt – a fine addition to anyone’s wardrobe. But minus a couple of other interesting prints and textures this is pretty much it people. After that, there is a melange of not so different wardrobe basics lacking in much detail or depth – sure there’s a distinctive nod to the 60’s, but overall comes across pretty sanitised and lacking in the MM essence any self-respecting fan would love to linger over, and pay the (not-so-cheap) price for. I would actually go further to question how much Janie had to do with this not particularly inspiring collection other than sign off the BR design prototypes.

Do I want to part with the best part of a hundred quid for a white dress with vertical stripe? Nothing is inspiring me to this, which is a shame as I think they have missed a trick here, particularly now with the fashion landscape totally embracing black & white, stripes and 60’s influences. As you might have gathered by now, this collection leaves me slightly cold and wanting to head for the nearest ‘Beyond Retro’ branch to make it all better again *and relax*….

AW 2011 hair trends: The Beehive

By Andrea Petrou on December 23rd, 2011

The sixties are a hot look this year. Peter Pan collars, short leather mini dresses, bright tights and bold prints hog the highstreet rails, but unless you add that beehive to the mix the look won’t be complete.

This season copy the likes of Emma Stone and the late great Amy Winehouse and pile up your hair into this look.
For a modern twist to the look dye your barnet a la Katy Perry or add feathers like Lady Gaga for a kooky mix.

See our beehive barnet picks below.

ShinyStyle loves: Edie Sedgwick-style costume jewellery

By Andrea Petrou on October 20th, 2010

Edie Sedgwick used to make dancewear and thrift store clothes look more expensive with dramatic costume jewellery

As Marilyn Monroe was so fond of reminding us, diamonds are a girl’s best friend, something that rings especially true as the party season approaches. But who can afford them? Not even celebrities tend to wear their own jewellery on the red carpet; just like we borrow a cute dress from a friend to wear out to the office Chrthristmas party, celebrities ring up Cartier’s and ask them if they could borrow three million smackers’ worth of diamonds for an important première, pretty please. But that kind of behaviour is really only okay if you’re Jennifer Lopez or similar – I think if I rang up a jeweller’s and asked to borrow some diamonds to go and meet Barry the plumber for a date at the cinema, all I would hear on the other end would be hysterical laughter and them hanging up.

Which is why we should all be taking a leaf out of fashion icon Edie Sedgwick’s book when it comes to making the cheapest of outfits look expensive. One of the true original party girls and face of the 1960s “Factory art” era, Edie knew all about how to make cheap look good. She continues to inspire fashion today with her poor-little-rich-girl style, and is one of my favourite dressers of all time. Pop-art artist Andy Warhol said of Edie in his memoirs, From A to B to Back Again, “She was trying to prove to her family back in Charleston that she could live on nothing, she would go the Lower East Side and buy the cheapest clothes, which happen to be little girl’s skirts, and her waist was so tiny she could get away with it. Fifty cents a skirt. She was the first person to wear ballet tights as complete outfit, with big earrings to dress it up. She was an innovator–out of necessity as well as fun–and the big fashion magazines picked up on her look right away. She was pretty incredible.”

Edie was lucky enough to have a trust-fund – unfortunately, most of us don’t have one of those, which is why I thank the heavens above for costume jewellery. They look like expensive jewels, they glitter like expensive jewels, but they don’t cost like expensive jewels – you can pick up a pair of statement chandelier earrings or a gorgeous cocktail ring from costume jewellery site GlitzySecrets for about twenty quid. Once you’ve got that, it doesn’t matter what else you wear – Edie showed us that all you needed to look party-ready were a pair of black tights and a leotard once you had the jewellery. Hell, you could wearing a binbag to a party and still be the most fabulous person in the room, as long as you’ve got the jewellery.

Viva fake luxury! And viva Edie. Check out the gallery above for our favourite pieces from GlitzySecrets.

Get the look: Mad Men 60s style

By Andrea Petrou on September 9th, 2010

It’s very rare that the fashion industry takes inspiration from TV but one show that’s driven some of this season’s trends is 60s show Mad Men. The advertising programme has hit the headlines thanks to it’s glamour and style, which covers the period from 1960 to 1963. As it was the pre mini skirt and pre hippy era, the fashions are still formal and the classic feminine shape of the fifties was all the rage.

Joan Harris’ (née Holloway) style is typical of the era with curve hugging dresses that show off her ideal late 50s to 60s figure, while Peggy Olsen is more girly, opting for a more innocent style of dress in gingham and tweed fabrics and high neck cardigans. And Betty Draper dresses in the style of a typical 60s “Desperate Housewife” in full skirts, petticoats, scarves and body hugging dresses on a night out.

Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant hints at her own clothing line

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on January 27th, 2009

Mad Men cast.jpg

Wouldn’t it be exciting to be dressed by the same woman who creates January Jones’ fashions on Mad Men? Well, when Janie Bryant, costume designer for Betty Draper, Joan Holloway and all the AMC series’ stars, was asked about doing her own line by Glamour magazine she had this to say:

“I’m working on some things right now…I hate to be so mysterious but I can’t really say! It would have my name attached to it though.”

We’re guessing it couldn’t be completely 50′s/60′s inspired no matter how much we’d all eat that up, but you can count on some vintagy touches and Bryant’s attention to detail.
