SS and AW trend alert: Black leather

By Andrea Petrou on August 8th, 2012

Leather has been a hot trend this season, and as we move into the winter months this look is set to get hotter.

Instead of the simple black biker jackets and shift skirts that have made their way into Spring/Summer wardrobes, this look will evolve into a glossy black vixen look for the Autumn/Winter season – think sleek dresses, knee and thigh high boots, that also give a huge nod to the gothic look.

Take inspiration from the looks shown on the Gucci, Fendi and Loewe AW 2012 catwalks or give a nod to this season’s leather looks, which have been channelled by a range of celebrities such as Alexa Chung and Emma Watson.

See the gallery below for the star style.

Chanel Haute Couture fall/winter 2012/2013 collection

By Andrea Petrou on July 4th, 2012

Karl Lagerfeld took Chanel’s Haute Couture 2012/13 collection right back to its classic roots.

Giving a nod to the vintage look, the collection comprised of gems such as shimmering silk tweed skirt suits from the 50s and 60s, as well as a 30s style bolero jacket covered in paintings of Chanel’s house interior.

Big, bold checks in dark colours adorned 80s shaped jackets, while fringing, tulle and flimsy fabrics took the collection right back to the 20s.

With such a varied collection, we’re sure the likes of Alexa Chung and Clemence Poesy, who were present in the front row, enjoyed it as much as we did.

Spring/Summer 2012 Hair trends: Dip Dye

By Andrea Petrou on June 18th, 2012

Dip Dye hair has moved on since it last made a key appearance on our barnets a few years ago, with this season being mainly about subtlety.
Darker roots and ends in a similar lighter hue have become a key look, waving goodbye to the old blonde and black contrasts.

Beyonce, Alexa Chung and Rooney Mara have all been spotted channelling this new trend with brown locks, fading to a lighter, dark blond end, while Gwyneth Paltrow went for a blonde top head with brown ends.

Jessie J and Demi Lovato however, took this trend to the next level incorporating bold colours such as pinks and purples, to their locks.

Pictures- Costume Institute Benefit Gala at the Metropolitan Museum: Rihanna, Beyonce, Alexa Chung and many more

By Andrea Petrou on May 8th, 2012

Hollywood’s elite stepped out last night to celebrate the Costume Institute Benefit Gala at the Metropolitan Museum.

Sporting the big, almost flamboyant frocks, were Beyonce, who went for a sheer black lace number with a blue feathered train, and Florence Welch who went for a three tiered sequined dress. They were joined with this trend by Scarlett Johansson who went for a pale pink sequined bodice and netted skirt.

Going for a simple white frock were Ashley Greene and Amy Adams, while Cameron Diaz went for a slinky silver number.

However our best dressed ladies of the evening had to be Alexa Chung, who went for a leather frock over a secretary style blouse, Rihanna who opted for a slinky black animal print dress, and Gwyneth Paltrow who went for a short silver futuristic number.

Alexa Chung is a “phenomenal” dresser says Christopher Kane

By Andrea Petrou on November 29th, 2011

Alexa Chung always looks “phenomenal”, according to designer Christopher Kane.

The TV presenter-and-model wore one of Christopher’s creations to last night’s British Fashion Awards and he says he was thrilled when he saw it on her.

He told Grazia: “I think Alexa looks pretty hot tonight actually. She’s wearing the last look from the [Spring/Summer 2012] show.

“It was just one of those things. She contacts me, she wanted to wear something so it’s great. She looks phenomenal, she always does.”

And it seems Alexa’s efforts paid off as she won the British Style Award, brought to you by Vodafone, for the second year running and she admits she was very flattered with the accolade.

Talking about the award – which is the only one voted for by the British public – Alexa said: “It’s just nice that I’m still relevant in 2011, isn’t it? I thought 2010 was a big one but now it’s got better.

I think this is the only one that the public voted for so it’s such an honour, it’s crazy, it’s so nice.”

Alexa beat nominees including Adele, Daisy Lowe, Florence Welch, Lara Stone, Stella McCartney and Tilda Swinton.

Handbag designer Luella Bartley says Alexa Chung dresses for herself

By Andrea Petrou on October 25th, 2011

Alexa Chung dresses for herself, according to handbag designer Luella Bartley.

The British model-and-presenter is known for her unique laidback style and Luella says she is a classic example of how English women should look.

Luella – who the best-selling Gisele style bag for Mulberry in 2002 – told the Observer newspaper: “English women are more concerned with looking cool and interesting than sexy or alluring. Alexa dresses in a very stylish way that is not about being sexy. I like to think she dresses for herself. That’s quite English. Men don’t come into it in a way. English women are feminists without thinking about it. We spend more time trying to make statements than looking nice. But not all English girls are like that – there are still the Cheryl Coles.”

And despite designing an iconic bag, Luella – whose own label closed in 2009 – insists she’s not a fan of It-bags.

She said: “It seems awful – I mean the It-bag, that’s the beginning of the end of culture in general. My label Luella was supposed to be lighthearted and all about individuality – not about the most wanted handbags.”

Alexa Chung’s clothes scare her

By Andrea Petrou on October 17th, 2011

Alexa Chung has a “terror room” of clothes.

The 27-year-old beauty spends much of her time working in the US, but back in her home in the UK she has a space so full of outfits she is scared to go near it.

She said: “‘Back in London, I had what I called a ‘terror room’. It was floor-to-floor with shipped boxes from the USA, still unpacked one year on, with clothes spilling out of them-basically, a mattress of clothes up to here. I’m worried that if it’s neatly arranged, I won’t be able to get dressed.”

However, it is not the only problem for the British star – who split with Arctic Monkeys singer Alex Turner earlier this year – she is also scared to take out the Mulberry bag named after her because she thinks it seems too showy.

She joked: “It just seems a bit much now, like, ‘Hey guys, guess what I’m carrying?’

Despite her clothing issues, she also has trouble with the paparazzi, especially when they catch her on a bad day.

She told Teen Vogue: “The annoying thing is that whenever I do spot a pap, I’m like, ‘Ugh! Today wasn’t a good day. Why didn’t you get me yesterday?’ “

New York Fashion Week: 3.1 Phillip Lim S/S 2012

By emilyborrett on September 15th, 2011

3.1 Phillip Lim Spring/Summer 2012

Picture 1 of 13
Picture 1 of 13

If effortless, edgy city-girl style is what you’re all about then you’ll appreciate the new 3.1 Phillip Lim collection which was shown at NYFW yesterday. For a label junkie he’s an absolute must-have, having proven very popular so far with the likes of Olivia Palermo and Alexa Chung.

There was a definite androgynous feel to Lim’s Spring/Summer designs, with sweet feminine twists in the form of sugary pastel tones and bright whites. To balance heavy masculine shapes such as slouchy, wide-shouldered shirts, straight-legged city trousers and padded coats, they were deftly teamed with cute silk tees in pale peach and lilac or short white shift dresses.

Dresses-wise, we were shown a cool, low-key collection of playful black silk pieces, flowing grey jersey dresses and navy-white optic floral prints which were really cool. What we love about 3.1 Phillip Lim designs is that there aren’t any frills or showiness, just simply elegant, fashion-forward and wearable pieces. You don’t need to be a mad Isabella Blow type or a Parisian couture princess to wear his designs – Lim designs for every woman out there in the city streets, and we think that’s really cool.

Check out the gallery above to see the new 3.1 Phillip Lim collection.

Alexa Chung is dating Theo from Hurts

By emilyborrett on September 15th, 2011

Alex Turner had better get back on the dating scene soon, because his newly exed love Alexa Chung is already in a sneaky relationship with Theo Hutchcraft from the electro Brit band Hurts.

We have to admit we were a bit choked when we found out that Alexa and Alex had called it a day on their relationship – fashion’s best couple!- but we like Theo’s style, so maybe he will be a reasonable substitute for Miss Chung.

A source leaked to the Sun newspaper: “It’s still early days but Theo is really keen on Alexa. They met at the American music festival Coachella in April and Theo has been spending a lot of time in New York, where Alexa lives. They share the same interests – music and fashion – and get on really well. But the relationship is still raw and they’re not putting too much pressure on each other to make it work at this stage.”

Awww, you guys. Now your relationship isn’t a secret anymore, can we see some his’n'hers matching denim outfits, please? Thanks.

Alexa Chung favours 60s styles for her figure

By emilyborrett on September 5th, 2011

Alexa Chung says that 60s-style clothes flatter her slender figure best.

The model and TV presenter has a fondness for classic 60s fashion because it was a decade that favoured leggy, gamine girls such as Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy who have a similar figure to Alexa’s.

Alexa told Harper’s Bazaar magazine: “My ex-boyfriend [photographer David Titlow] showed me Antonioni’s 1966 film ‘Blow-Up’ in my late teens. I remember seeing Jane Birkin. And I couldn’t believe it. She even made just wearing a pair of tights look sexy. . . I think the 60s vibe suits my body type, which is skinny legs and a boyish frame. It’s the groupie vibe that I’m attracted to. They had these amazing love affairs, and both the men and the women were made amazing by them. The girls in the 60s were never overshadowed by the men they dated. You can talk about Jean Shrimpton without having to mention Bailey or Terence Stamp first.”

Alexa understandably tried to distance herself from her classic 60s dress sense because every teenage girl in the UK began copying her – oh, the perils of being a style icon! She said about the Alexa copycats: “I fell out of love with the 60s for a while. I think because I was so identified with it. It’s like Sienna Miller when she did boho, then suddenly stopped because she was like, ‘F**k. What else can I do, because I’ve done it?’ Everyone copied my sodding coat for a while too. It was my Harrods kid’s vintage one. Every girl suddenly had one and I was like, ‘Arrgh!’ I got really bored of smock dresses and loafers for a while. But I feel like I’m ready to fall in love all over again.”

Yeah, I feel like that whenever thousands of teenage girls suddenly start dressing like me too, Alexa. I totally feel your pain.
