2011 style tribute: Amy Winehouse

By Andrea Petrou on December 23rd, 2011

Although 2011 bought us some great new designers and celebrity fashions, it was also a sad year for music and style fans around the world as we said a goodbye to the talented Amy Winehouse.

Her soulful voice, statement beehive and tattoos as well as her ballet pumps will always be remembered in the fashion world as will her preppy chic look, which of course has been channelled in her Fred Perry collaboration.

To mark the end of the year and pay tribute to the talented star we’ve put together a gallery of her style.

AW 2011 hair trends: The Beehive

By Andrea Petrou on December 23rd, 2011

The sixties are a hot look this year. Peter Pan collars, short leather mini dresses, bright tights and bold prints hog the highstreet rails, but unless you add that beehive to the mix the look won’t be complete.

This season copy the likes of Emma Stone and the late great Amy Winehouse and pile up your hair into this look.
For a modern twist to the look dye your barnet a la Katy Perry or add feathers like Lady Gaga for a kooky mix.

See our beehive barnet picks below.

Amy Winehouse’s father turns her home into a shrine

By Andrea Petrou on December 12th, 2011

Amy Winehouse’s father has turned her home into a shrine.

The 27-year-old singer was found dead in her north London home in July and her father Mitch Winehouse says he still can’t bear to touch some of the items in the property because he is still haunted by her tragic death.

He said: “I can’t bring myself to move some things. Some of the stuff that she left – it’s still there, just as it was.”

Mitch says while he is struggling to come to terms with his daughter’s death, he has stopped blaming the drinking establishments she went to near her Camden home.

He said: “I used to blame places she went to, like the pubs in Camden Town, but now I don’t.”

He also wants the council to pay tribute to Amy, who battled drink and drug addictions and was found to have died from alcohol poisoning.

He told the Camden New Journal: “A daughter of my friend died and they had a bench dedicated to her outside the Roundhouse venue. I would love to do something similar for Amy because this will always be the place she loved.

“We want to ask Camden Council if we can have a bench in Camden Square or a memorial of some sort. I think everyone would be happy. The only thing that worries me is that the neighbours might not like it, and I really hope that isn’t a problem.”

Last night Amy’s first album since her death, ‘Lioness: Hidden Treasures’, reached number one in the UK charts and proceeds will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

The foundation was set up by Mitch in the wake of her death to help young people struggling with addiction problems.

Amy Winhouse’s final Fred Perry collection goes on sale

By Andrea Petrou on December 7th, 2011

Amy Winehouse’s final Fred Perry collection has gone on sale.

The fashion house announced in August they would posthumously release the late star’s designs and they are now available to buy from their website, with proceeds going to the foundation set up in memory of the ‘Back to Black’ star, who was found dead at home in London in July.

Fred Perry said in a statement: “Referencing Amy’s Fifties Americana and Art Deco Miami, the collection features an exclusive print scattered with Cadillacs, juke boxes and cats-eye sunglasses in a palette of pink mist pale blue and black.

“Under such circumstances, the usual fees and royalties and fees from the collection will be donated to the Amy Winehouse Foundation. Fred Perry will also make a seasonal donation to the Foundation.”

Amy’s father Mitch has previously admitted it felt “natural” to grant permission for the designs to be sold.

He said: “When Fred Perry came to us to ask what we would like to do with the new collection it was natural to continue.

“Amy loved working on both collections and would want them to be made available. All the money we make and the donation that Fred Perry will give will go straight into to the Amy Winehouse Foundation which we are setting up to help children and young people in her name.”

Amy Winehouse dress sells for £43,200 at auction

By Andrea Petrou on December 1st, 2011

The dress worn by Amy Winehouse on the cover of her ‘Back To Black’ album sold for £43,200 at auction.

The late singer’s chiffon-print frock by Thai designer Disaya went under the hammer as part of the ‘Passion For Fashion’ auction this week and was bought by a fashion museum based in Santiago, Chile.

The proceeds will go to the Amy Winehouse foundation and the family of the late star.

Her father Mitch – who was in attendance at London’s Kerry Taylor Auctions to see the dress sold – said: “We want to give money to projects that make a direct difference. It is a source of great comfort to know that Amy would be proud of this and right behind it.

“Obviously we want to try and raise money for the family and the grandchildren so that they will be able to be helped by Amy too in the years to come so that was very important. We all need to survive.”

It had been estimated that the dress would fetch between £10,000 and £20,000.

Meanwhile, the gown Audrey Hepburn dubbed her “lucky dress” failed to sell at the auction.

The ivory-coloured lace garment she wore in ‘Roman Holiday’ and had adapted to wear when she collected her Best Actress Oscar for the film had been estimated to sell for £40,000 to £60,000 but did not attract any bids at the sale.

Amy Winehouse’s addictions were “within her control” when she died says Reg Traviss

By Andrea Petrou on October 25th, 2011

Reg Traviss insists Amy Winehouse’s addictions were “within her control” when she died.

The film director – who dated the late ‘Rehab’ singer for two years and got engaged to her weeks before she was found dead at her London home in July aged 27 – believes her passing was as a result of the damage she had put her body through during her years of drink and drug abuse, though he insists she didn’t drink excessively for her age and was clean of narcotics.

He said in an interview with the Daily Mirror newspaper: “She had been involved with drugs long before we were together. That was way in the past, that was not a bit of her life.

“You couldn’t put her in a room with drugs, it just wasn’t her world any more. She had nothing to do with drugs, had no interest in drugs, all that was in the past.

“The drinking as well, it wasn’t any more than a lot of people her age. I know girls of 27 who work in the City and they drink more than she drank. They binge-drink three or four nights a week.

“But she had all that within her control. What happened was a reaction to the abuse she had put her body through a few years ago.

“These things take a strain and if the body gets strained it takes its toll.

“I believe that’s what it was and I think that the seizures she had been having were a consequence of that.”

Reg is doing his best to move on with his life and has returned to work, but admits he is finding it “tough” at times.

He said: “It’s been foggy, very foggy… very tough. I have started getting back to work and keeping busy, but it’s difficult.

“You start thinking about it, you get down – it brings you down. Amy had turned a corner, that is the tragedy.

“I get good days and bad days. It’s like that really. You are realistic, you understand it and accept it, and then on the flip side everything seems surreal. Even talking about it is strange.”

The inquest into Amy’s death is due to reopen tomorrow (26.10.11) after it was opened and adjourned on July 25.

An initial postmortem examination proved inconclusive, but her family later said toxicology results had shown there were no illegal drugs found in her system at the time of her death.

Dionne Bromfield will perform at the LOOK fashion show

By emilyborrett on August 31st, 2011

The late Amy Winehouse’s prodigal god-daughter, Dionne Bromfield, has been confirmed to be performing at the LOOK magazine fashion show during London Fashion Week, for the same show that Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding is making her catwalk debut in.

This isn’t Dionne’s first taste of the fashion world, because she’s already the face of the streetwear brand Gio Gio. Last year Diana Vickers performed at the LOOK catwalk, so Dionne is following in the footsteps of other quirky, up-and-coming singers.

We’ve always loved LOOK fashion shows for their ability to turn regular high-street clothes, style them cleverly and turn the whole thing into a proper fashion event. The magazine uses some of the UK’s best-loved high street brands such as Urban Outfitters, Miss Selfridge, River Island and Oasis.

Ali Hall, Editor of Look, said: “The Look Show has become an established part of London Fashion Week and readers absolutely love it. We’re thrilled to be working with Westfield to make this season’s show bigger and better than ever, and to be part of such an exciting retail launch.”

Good luck, Dionne, though you don’t need it – you’ll be amazing.

After careful deliberation it was confirmed not long ago that the final collections Amy Winehouse designed for Fred Perry were to go on sale. And today the autumn winter 2011 range has hit the online shop.

The collection is accompanied by a statement that says: “After much consideration and with the blessing of Amy’s family, we have decided to release the AW11 Amy Winehouse for Fred Perry Collection.”

Fred Perry goes on to note how the collection shows Amy’s passion and dedication to the collaboration and that her ‘signature style’ is evident throughout. They certainly aren’t lying.

The 30-piece collection looks like taken out of Amy’s wardrobe. It’s packed with her retro style: a 60’s inspired houndstooth miniskirt, a black bodycon dress, a cropped cardigan and classic polo shirts, one of Amy’s trademark garments which she was often spotted in around Camden. The accessories include penny loafers, a black belt and a glossy patent bowling bag.

The exceptionally talented singer had also completed a spring/summer 2012 collection before her tragic death which is to be released next year. All royalties and fees from the two collaborations will be donated to the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

Amy Winehouse’s designs for label Fred Perry could be released posthumously

By Andrea Petrou on July 28th, 2011

Amy Winehouse’s designs for label Fred Perry could be released posthumously.

The British streetwear company – famed for their iconic polo shirts, synonymous with teenagers of the 60s and 70s and the early Skinhead moment – had collaborated with the singer, who died suddenly on Saturday (23.07.11), on two successful collections and say they have three in the Fred Perry x Amy Winehouse range which could potentially be released.

Whether the garments will be made and sold, however, has yet to be decided, as the brand is planning to approach her family for input.

A spokesperson for the brand said: “Everything is on hold until we speak with Amy’s family and management.”

Amy was said to have been fully involved with the design of her collections, the first of which was a 50s inspired set which included twinsets, gingham, pencil skirts and capri pants in October 2010.

She then collaborated on a follow up Spring/Summer collection which was Hawaiian-inspired and launched in March this year.

Richard Martin, a marketing manager from Fred Perry, told Harper’s Bazaar Amy was a “delight” to work with.

He said: “Bright, passionate, and dedicated, with strong ideas of exactly what it was that she wanted from the range. Detailing, fabrics-she was all over it.”

The three collections Amy designed for Fred Perry could are enough for the label to release through until late next year.

Amy Winehouse’s funeral will take place today

By Andrea Petrou on July 26th, 2011

Amy Winehouse’s funeral will take place today

The 27-year-old singer – who was found dead at her north London home on Saturday will be laid to rest in a private ceremony for her loved ones, a family spokesperson has confirmed.

The representative refused to give details of the time or location for the service.

Jewish customs normally require a funeral to take place within 24 hours of death.

However, Amy’s had to be delayed in order for post-mortem examinations to be carried out.

Her inquest was opened and immediately adjourned at London’s St Pancras Coroner’s Court today in order to prevent further delays in the burial.

Assistant Deputy Coroner Suzanne Greenaway told the two-minute hearing: “I’m formally opening this inquest. I’m issuing interim certificates to allow Miss Winehouse’s family to make arrangements for the funeral.”

Sharon Duff, Coroner’s Officer at St Pancras Coroner’s Court, had earlier told the hearing: “I bring before you the death of Amy Jade Winehouse, aged 27, born on the 14 September 1983 in London.

“She was a divorced lady living at Camden Square, NW1. She was certified dead at her home by a paramedic and a doctor on July 23.

“She was a singer/songwriter at the time of her death and was identified by her family here at St Pancras this morning. A section 20 post mortem has been carried out and histology and toxicology taken to determine the cause of death.

“The scene was investigated by police and determined non-suspicious.”

The case has now been adjourned until October 26.

Amy Winehouse: found dead aged 27 in London flat

By shinychris on July 23rd, 2011

Troubled singer Amy Winehouse has been found dead at her home in North London, it has been reported.

The Back To Black singer was apparently found at the property by emergency services at 3.54pm this afternoon, according to sources, and her death is being treated as ‘unexplained’ by police.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: ‘Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased.

She had recently finished a course of alcohol rehabilitation in London and at the time was under strict instructions not to drink.

Last month, the north Londoner pulled out of the European tour after she was jeered at the first gig in Serbia for appearing too drunk on stage to perform.

For 90 minutes, she mumbled through parts of songs and at times left the stage – leaving her band to fill in.

Winehouse’s breakthrough disc, 2006′s Back to Black, won her five Grammy Awards and helped her achieve worldwide stardom, but her music had been overshadowed by drug use and run-ins with the law.

Amy Winehouse joins a long list of pop and rock icons who died at 27 including Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Doors lead singer Jim Morrison and Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain.

Singer and presenter Myleene Klass tweeted: “OMG. Amy Winehouse. Exceptional talent and really nice lady. RIP.”

BBC Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton wrote: “Can not believe the news. Amy was a special girl. The saddest news.”
