The Jolie-Pitts graced the red carpet at the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, but floated past all interviewers so we’re still trying to figure out who designed Angelina Jolie’s ethereal dress. Can we assume it’s St. John? With Angelina, we never assume. After splitting her pants at a premiere a few months ago, she almost had another fashion trauma when she stepped on the hem of her dress and almost pulled the top down. I’m sure Brad Pitt would have covered her up.
Angelina is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Mariane Pearl in A Mighty Heart.

With the Golden Globes reduced to a half hour press conference, the red carpet traded for a picket line, and all the parties cancelled, it was not a very glam evening. But with many winners being of the lower-profile, less headline-grabbing sort, would a gala telecast have been a letdown anyway? Would everyone have worn black?
Take Julia Roberts, for instance. Pretty much the most megawatt star you can find, she has been sticking to basic black on the red carpet for a while (here at the American Cinematheque Awards and the Charlie Wilson’s War premiere). Her film did not win any of the five awards it was nominated for, giving way to lesser known performances like Cate Blanchett in I’m Not There and Javier Bardem in No Country For Old Men.

The Hollywood Reporter has released its annual list of the highest paid actresses with Reese Witherspoon, Angelina Jolie, and Cameron Diaz topping out with $15 million to $20 million paychecks. But we’re of course more interested in who’s more high fashion than who’s high earner. I think the answer is the same: Reese Witherspoon, seen here at the premiere of Rendition. (We kept things even by foregoing award show frocks and sticking to red carpet premieres.) While she doesn’t give off a big fashionista, all I care about is clothes vibe, she’s continually best dressed at red carpet events and just running around town.

Angelina Jolie stayed cool as a cucumber Sunday at the European premiere of her new movie Beowulf, despite a few wardrobe malfunctions that might send lesser stars into a tizzy. The cold London breeze may have had some effect when her leather pants began to split down the back. Ever the loving hubby, Brad Pitt covered the offending seam with his hand. But that wasn’t it, Angelina also stepped in gum in her Christian Louboutins! That would qualify as a bad night even if you weren’t in the spotlight of the international press. Pair that with the fact that Jolie has said she was surprised by how realistic and larger-than-life her love scenes are in the film, and Mama Jolie may be in bed with some aspirin this morning.

They were all fabulous, but my ultimate favorites were Angelina Jolie’s and Zahara Jolie-Pitt’s matching white Valentino Histoire bags ($1695 at Bergdorf Goodman), Eva Longoria’s Prada snakeskin frame bag, and Ashley Olsen’s Fendi crocodile tote. Angelina’s bag is listed above, but to get chic designs just like Eva’s, Instyle suggests you try New York & Company’s City Skins handbag tote for $34.95. A similar find to Ashley’s is the Helen Welsh ‘Large Croco Square’ shopping bag from Nordstrom for $198.

Turns out I’m not the only one who finds it odd that the most famous, most beautiful tattooed lady in all the land is the face of conservative women’s wear brand St. John. Rumor has it that Angelina Jolie, once famous for wearing Billy Bob Thornton’s blood in a vial around her neck, might be free of her multi-million dollar contract with the company. Obviously, Jolie doesn’t need the money, and her recent remarks about the Iraq war has led the company to question how well Jolie can represent their brand.
