AW 2010 trends: Capes
Bring your A/W 2010 wardrobe bang up to date and be a sexy caped crusader this season.
Lady Gaga and Nicole Richie have been spotted in them and they covered the catwalk with Givenchy, Celine and Hussein all displaying these throw on items. Erdem also made a lasting impression opening its catwalk with a stunning embroidery embellished cape.
The key thing about capes is that they not only keep you warm but also give a great silhouette, and they are fantastic for throwing over a tee or party dress for the upcoming festive season.
Here’s our top five capes.
A/W Trend alert: Opulence
Ladies, get ready to preen and pout, because this season’s going out look is all about decadence. That’s right, the opulence trend is making a comeback.
This decadent trend takes it’s influence from the Victorian era incorporating lace, jewels, velvet, feathers and brocade and the more detailing the better. Paul Costelloe, Miu Miu, Christopher Kane and Max Mara were just some of the designers who sent their models down the a/w 2010 catwalk in this trend.
So how do you wear this regal style?
Firstly consider the colours. Jewel tones, mauves, black and berry are all key in this trend, as are accessories, which should be piled on. Think belts, headbands, earrings and chunky necklaces and bracelets.
We’ve picked out our top five key pieces for this trend.
A/W Trend Alert: Awesome Alpine Knits
If you’re not a fan of skiing but heart that cosy, kitsch Alpine look, then it’s good news because one of this season’s hottest trends is all about the Alpine look.
Cosy, chunky knitwear with deer print, bobble scarves and hats, fur boots and gilets were all sent down the catwalk by designers including Max Mara, D&g, Missoni and Chanel, emulating warmth, giving a nod to the Sound of Music and ensuring we’ll be staying warm throughout the cold winter.
The key to this look is layering. Team up thick knitted leggings with skirts and gilets over Tees or take inspiration from the designers and team up fur with chunky knits for a glam take on this look.
We’ve picked out our top five Alpine must-haves.
A/W 2010 Trend Alert: Glee style Geek Chic
Forget about smart and sophisticated, because one huge trend marching into the highstreet this A/W is Geek Chic.
Thick rimmed glasses, knitted preppy jumpers, brogues and socks up to the knees were all huge on the catwalks with designers such as Henry Holland channelling this trend and taking inspiration from TV shows such as Glee and Ugly Betty.
And this trend has already been picked up by celebrity fans with Alexa Chung and Chloe Sevigny leading the way and Britney Spears has also given a nod to this trend donning thick glasses for a daytime look.
So pull up your thick cable knitted socks/tights, grab that cardigan and satchel and get geeky.
Here’s our top five Geek Chic must haves.
A/W Trends: Top five boots
The autumn weather already seems to have hit the UK, forcing us to replace our flip-flops and gladiator sandals with boots and waterproof shoes. If you, like me hadn’t anticipated to be donning that A/W wear quite so soon, you’ll sympathise when I tell you I had to track down my last season footwear becuase I hadn’t yet decided what new season pairs to go for.
There’s a range of different styles to choose from this season. If you want to channel the designer look then leather ankle boots complete with fur lining, a la Burberry, are a great step in the right direction. If fur isn’t your thing then you could also opt for the lace up trend, which has already been channelled by celebrities including Taylor Momsen.
And if that still doesn’t appeal then fear not, because the traditional knee high boot is still lurking around. However, like with every season this has been given a slight revamp.

A/W 2010 Trend Alert: Leopard Print
Not a season goes by without leopard print making some sort of appearance, be it bold or very subtly hiding in trims.
This season it’s back to making a statement prowling into the highstreet in the shape of faux fur cropped jackets, peep toe shoes and Bette Lynch vintage style frocks. And as A/W 2010 gives a huge nod to accessories we can see this print making an appearance in hairbands, clips and skinny vintage style belts, not to mention bags.
Love it or hate it you’re not going to get away from this trend and if you’re the latter we suggest you change your spots and get buying this print, we guarantee with a statement coat you’ll look and feel like the cat who got the cream.

Fashion Crush: Red vintage style dress from Miss Selfridge
We’re flitting in and out of seasons with our fashion crush posts this week and today we’re back in our AW 2010 mode. After all, who can resist this cute frock from Miss Selfridge?
The dress looks like an authentic vintage number with the 50s bow and cut, and the sleeves are perfect for those winter nights.
Wear it to a late summer BBQ, on a night out with Mary Jane or platform heels, or store in your wardrobe for those windy autumn days.
However, don’t wait too long to snap this up, at £28 we have a feeling it’ll be flying off those rails.
Autumn fashion crush: The Trilby hat
The Trilby has made a huge stand this season, appearing at festivals, on the beach and of course on the average day of shopping.
And it’s good news for those of you mad about hats because this little accessory is making its way straight into A/W season.
Trilbys were huge on the A/W catwalks with designers such as Vivienne Westwood showing these off, however, if you think you can get away with wearing the straw one from the summer then think again, because next season it’s all about tweed, heavy fabrics and accessories (think brooches).
This Trilby gem from Topshop is a great example of what you should be sporting, encompassing the winter must have colour, camel, and hinting at the 50s with a cute feather detailing. We think it’s a bargain at £25.
Autumn trend must-have: The aviation jacket
Autumn trends are beginning to sneak into the highstreet, with puffball sleeves, tweeds and camel colours making subtle appearances against the sale rails.
Although we’ll be bringing you a range of galleries showcasing the ultimate autumn must-haves, we thought we’d give you a little preview and what better way to start than with this the aviator trend.
Those of you who have been following catwalk trends will know that the aviator style is going to be a huge must-have this season. It made a big appearance at the Burberry A/W 2010 catwalk show (below), where the British designer showed off a range of bomber style jackets with fur in a range of different lengths (think Top Gun style and you’ll know what we mean.)
Make this look a key item in your wardrobe with this cute jacket from Geox, which comes in at an affordable £329.
