Madonna teams up with Iconix Brand Group Inc to create clothing range

By Andrea Petrou on March 11th, 2010

It seems today is a day for singer and designer collaborations. Hot off the news that Amy Whinehouse is teaming up with Fred Perry comes the announcement that queen of pop Madonna will also be collaborating with Iconix Brand Group Inc.

The singer will be teaming up with the company behind labels as Badgley Mischka (a favourite with Dame Helen Mirren) and Candie’s (as modelled by Britney Spears) to launch her MG Icon Range of clothing.

And her first foray into the design world will be a Junior Range, w aptly named Material Girl, which will be sold in Macys from August, and includes clothing, footwear, bags and jewellery.

However, we won’t have to be struggling to get ourselves into these, as next year the designer will also be creating something for the “grown ups” and will extend her range to beauty and fragrances.

Oscar 2010: Were we right about Helen Mirren’s red carpet dress?

By Andrea Petrou on March 8th, 2010

Helen Mirren Oscars 2010.jpg

Earlier today we set about predicting what Helen Mirren would be wearing for this year’s Oscars. Looking back at her previous trends, which screamed elegance and bared her trademark sheer sleeves we thought we’d definitely see these trends tonight. We also predicted she would be wearing Lacroix.

Well, we we’re right about the frock. Like fellow Brit Kate Winslet, Helen also opted for silver, but went for a straight dress, covered with a layer of organza and, yes, you guessed it beaded sheer sleeves.

However, we weren’t so bang on with the designer. Instead of Lacroix Helen opted for Badgley Mischka, a designer she is familiar with.

Well, we suppose one out of two isn’t bad is it?

Oscars scoop straight from Mark Badgley and James Mischka!

By Andrea Thatcher on February 19th, 2009

Badgley Mischka Andrea.jpg

Talking to Mark Badgley and James Mischka today at the launch of their new fragrance, Couture, they let slip some Oscar fashion scoopage! They *are* dressing one of the best actress nominees – so it’s Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie, Melissa Leo, Meryl Streep or Kate Winslet. They also said the actress in question does have the fragrance and perhaps hinted that she would be part of the advertising campaign.

“We think it’s important that the Oscars remain important and aspirational,” James Mischka said. “If they all wear black strapless dresses it will be sad.”

The guys were super sweet, and I just loved The Fall 09 Badgley Mischka collection earlier this week, so they’ve definitely earned a fan in me. Be sure to check ShinyGloss for more on the fragrance!

New York Fashion Week: Badgley Mischka Fall 09 gallery

By Andrea Thatcher on February 18th, 2009

Badgley Mischka’s Fall 2009 collection embraced more of the traditional darker colors for fall and winter with blacks, bordeaux and ultramarine with some bright crimson and teal pieces thrown in for good measure. Eveningwear was featured prominently and accented with some fabulous accessories. We were backstage before the show getting an up-close look at the shoes and jewelry that really helped Badgley Mischka’s designs sparkle.

America’s Next Top Model recap

By Andrea Thatcher on February 27th, 2008

Paulina.jpg

The decibal level of America’s Next Top Model is enough to make me want to turn off the television the first time anything that could be remotely construed as exciting happens, because all the girls start screaming their heads off.

The girls’ new loft wasn’t as exciting as that reveal usually is in reality shows. I’m wondering if the price of real estate in New York was prohibitive for the show, or if they really wanted to give the girls the feel of a model apartment. How about a bunch of girls having to sleep in the same bed? Is this the ANTM equivelant of the ubiquitous Real World hot tub?

America’s Next Top Model recap

By Andrea Thatcher on February 20th, 2008

Top%20Model.jpg

The first episode of Tyra Banks’ America’s Next Top Model is typically the hardest for me to watch – it’s maximum hype and minimal fashion, you haven’t identified with any of the girls yet, and there’s a lot of crazy antics. Oh, and someone always tries to rap.

Despite the edgy black and white dominatrix-themed advertising for the 10th cycle, this episode started out with a peppy preppy school-girl motif with the girls attending “Top Model Prep” and a faux pep rally with past favorite contestants cheerleading.

The school-girl idea certainly isn’t new, but since they’re on the same network it really smacks of trying to cash in on Gossip Girl’s popularity with the fash pack. But these uniforms were cheap looking, not posh. Instead of stimulating creativity amongst the hopefuls to try and stand out, it just drowned them in sameness.

One way fashion benefits from writers strike? More celebs in the front row

By Andrea Thatcher on January 29th, 2008

Ellen%20Pompeo.jpg

The Grey’s Anatomy stars seem to have been the first to confirm their fashion show attendance. We’ve already reported that Chandra Wilson and Sara Ramirez will be at the Angel Sanchez show, and now Ellen Pompeo is reported to be showing up for Y-3 after attending Giorgio Armani Prive in Paris last week. She is seen at the SAG awards at left in a Nina Ricci creation she supposedly picked from the pages of Vogue magazine.

It seems that many celebrities are looking to supplement incomes affected by the writer’s strike, either asking flat out for money, flights, and hotels in return for attending shows or even saying they’ll only attend if they can get a contract for an ad campaign.

“Gone are the days when celebrities came to the shows in exchange for a wardrobe,” Alison Brod, of Alison Brod Public Relations, said to WWD. “They want to make money.”

Lori Levine, of talent booking firm Flying Television, told WWD that Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen and Narciso Rodriguez are always popular with celebs. She expects stars with strong relationships with designers – like Jessica Simpson at Michael Kors, Claire Danes at Narciso Rodriguez and Teri Hatcher at Badgley Mischka, to be out en force.

Carrie Underwood at CMA Awards

By Andrea Thatcher on November 8th, 2007

Having earned fame as the winner of American Idol 4, it’s no surprise country crooner Carrie Underwood knows a thing or two about television staging. I love that she chose a totally impractical dress that probably required more placing than my wedding gown and which would not allow her to move if she wished to maintain this pristine image. Because it was totally worth it! This is a lovely shot. Carrie wore a Badgley Mischka couture gown on the red carpet, and it is rumored she wore $6.2 million worth of diamonds with the canary yellow dress during her performance.
