Top five new models to watch in 2012

By Andrea Petrou on January 11th, 2012

Move over Miranda Kerr and Karlie Kloss, there’s a new model pack in town.

Whilst we adore you, it seems designers are slowly moving the bar, introducing younger, fresh faced ladies with a different look to showcase their creations.

This year it’s all about haughty, willowy gals such as Maja Salamon who was a hot face on the Balenciaga catwalk and Dempsey Stewart who captured the fashion world’s hearts at Louis Vuitton’s SS 2012 runway.

See our top five new faces in the gallery below.

Alistair Carr has been named as Pringle of Scotland’s new design director.

By Andrea Petrou on March 29th, 2011

Alistair Carr has been named as Pringle of Scotland’s new design director.

The Balenciaga designer succeeds creative director Clare Waight Keller at the luxurious label and he will present his first Pringle collection in September for spring/summer 2012.

Jean Fang, Pringle of Scotland’s chief executive, told the Telegraph newspaper: “We are thrilled to have Alistair on board. His passion for both cutting-edge and contemporary luxury design is the perfect alliance for Pringle of Scotland, and we look forward to continuing our success as an international luxury brand with an emphasis in knitwear.”

Alastair – who completed his womenswear MA at Central Saint Martins – was until recently in charge of the design team at Balenciaga under Nicolas Ghesquiere and has previously worked at Marni, Cacharel and Chloe. He also showed his own label at London Fashion Week for three seasons.

Clare announced her resignation earlier this month after being at the label since 2005.

The designer – who is pregnant with her third child – said: “It’s a sad moment – but the perfect time to close my era at Pringle. I leave incredibly proud of Pringle’s growth from a Scottish knitwear company to an international luxury brand. And to a certain extent, this move is for personal reasons.”

Pringle of Scotland’s latest campaign was fronted by Tilda Swinton.

Salma Hayek wears the first ever Gucci Couture dress to the Cannes Film Festival 2010

By Andrea Petrou on May 13th, 2010

Salma Hayek red carpet Gucci.jpg

Salma Hayek’s one very lucky lady. The actress who is married to Francois-Henri Pinault, head of the PPR group which owns Gucci, Balenciaga and Yves Saint Laurent has been given the ultimate fashion privilege – to wear the first ever Gucci Couture dress.

And what better place to wear it than to the Cannes film festival 2010.

We reported on rumours of the brand’s new venture back in January, but until now we’ve seen no concrete evidence. However it seems the company has been working behind the scenes with this one and one thing’sfor sure; now that Salma’s started the trend, celebrities will be out in this designer range too. But will they look as stunning as Salma? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Spring Trend: Beautiful bags

By Andrea Petrou on March 12th, 2010

Just when we thought the expensive “IT” bag had taken the hint and disappeared (well for a good few years anyway) it’s decided to return once again to the shelves.

According to Selfridges its sales of designer bags have increased by a massive 60% over the past year with many handbags queens making a beeline for the Mulberry Alexa Chung inspired satchel bag. There’s also been a huge increase in the much coveted Marc by Marc Jacobs ‘Hillier’ bag in bright purple and red City bag by Balenciaga.

However, we know, like us, many of you may not be able to fork out those thousands, or at least high hundreds you need to buy one of these bags so we’ve decided to have a little rebellion against the IT bag, giving you alternative spring 2010 trends instead with a much fairer price tag.

Twilight’s Kristen Stewart is turned into a doll – but looks better in real life

By lotte on November 13th, 2009

The Twilight Saga: New Moon - UK Fan Event Following the completely crazy, mega-huge success of the first Twilight film (and the books) Kristen Stewart has been in the media spotlight non-stop. But it’s her fashion choices in the last few weeks during the promotional tour for New Moon, that have been getting our attention. Most recently she’s been photographed in next-season head-to-toe oufits from the coolest designers, like this neon Proenza Schouler skirt and top – Dakota Fanning, also in New Moon, was photographed in similar furturistic-but-fun looks for the December issue of Teen Vogue.

We’ve also just found out that Bella and Edward from the films have been made into dolls by Barbie. We’re not so sure Kristen Stewart’s Barbie alter-ego looks as good as the real thing, especially when she’s working the sheer panel trend as well as this in Balenciaga.

If you think someone you know would love a Twilight doll for Christmas (and let’s be honest, don’t we all), you can preorder them from Forbidden Planet.

Catwalk Queen’s Kimberley Foster writes:

Who is she kidding? After Valentino’s final show, we all knew that Natalia Vodianova’s semi-retirement from the catwalk wouldn’t last forever, but we didn’t realise it would be quite this soon. The Russian beauty opened the Balenciaga spring/summer ’09 show this week in Paris. Click here to see more photos from the show.

Keira Knightley’s September ’08 cover for Vogue U.S. – revealed!

By Kimberley Foster on August 11th, 2008

Click image for a closer look.

Following dwindling sales in April and May, the pressure riding on the September ’08 issue of American Vogue has been fairly high. As previously reported, Anna Wintour chose Keira Knightley for the cover, which has been shot by Mario Testino. So far, public reaction to the cover hasn’t been favourable. Fashion fans don’t seem to be warming to the British actress and her messy hair, and not even her Balenciaga outfit is winning her much praise. This, coupled with the fact that the issue has slimmed down from 725 pages, from the same time last year, to 674 pages due to a drop in ad sales, and things don’t seem to be sitting too pretty right now for Wintour and co.

Will Smith and Charlize Theron at ‘Hancock’ premiere

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on June 19th, 2008

Will Smith Charlize Theron Hancock copy.jpg

Will Smith and Charlize Theron certainly do make a fine pair on the red carpet for their new movie “Hancock.”

We like the fit of Smith’s suit, especially the blazer, though we might prefer a shirt and tie.

Theron stuck with her red carpet staple of late – highly structured, modern little black dress packing a designer punch – this time from Balenciaga.

Vogue’s next ‘It’ girl: Julie Macklowe

By Andrea Thatcher on June 3rd, 2008

Julie Macklowe copy.jpg

Usually everyone’s talking about the latest Hollywood “It” girl, but we’re more interested in fashion’s It girls – and what better barometer than Vogue.

It’s rumored that New York socialite Julie Macklowe will hold the coveted title in Vogue’s July issue.

Though socialite probably isn’t the right descriptor for the fashionista since in addition to being a staple of the social circuit, Macklowe is also a career woman as a portfolio manager for Sigma Capital Management.

Paris Fashion Week: Balenciaga

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on February 28th, 2008

pfw-balenciaga-aw0809.jpg

Seeming to continue the momentum of last season’s floral body-reshaping dresses, Nicholas Ghesquiere is changing the women’s silhouettes again at Balenciaga. It seems that the Balenciaga women no longer needs definition in their body, as it will be reshaped any way with stiffly-voluminous pieces, case in point, his shiny scarlett egg-shaped dress. It’s so rigid in a oddly tailored way, it puts last season’s pieces to shame.

If we disliked the Jennifer Connelly dresses, you can imagine how we feel about this latest developement.

Watch a video of the show over at Catwalk Queen.

Yay or Nay Wednesday: Balenciaga Derby shearling high heels

By Andrea Thatcher on January 2nd, 2008

Balenciaga%20bootie.jpg

So we know it’s us, and not Nicolas Ghesquiere, but we’re not totally getting Balenciaga’s shoes as of late. These derby shearling high heels for instance, when we think of them in terms of Carrie wearing something like them in a fictional Sex and the City world we get it. But then we think about the real world we live in, and we don’t. Do you? Yay or Nay?
