Why are sunglasses so expensive?

By Andrea Thatcher on December 3rd, 2007

Bulgari%20sunglasses.jpg

Nonprescription sunglasses sales totalled $2.12 billion last year with 112 million pairs sold, but they’re largely a very small, very plastic accessory. While the vast majority of sunglasses sold cost less than $30, the remaining 11 million pairs make up more than half of the business. I doubt anyone’s surprised, having seen price tags like the one on the Bulgari pair at left which retail for $650. But what’s the deal?

One winter necessity – the scarf – goes high fashion

By Andrea Thatcher on October 29th, 2007

Scarves.jpg

The Washington Post is of the mind that the scarves on Balenciaga‘s fall runways are going to change the way we look at and wear the accessories this winter. While the look on the left is perhaps an accurate portrayal of what East Coasters end up looking like in the winter, we’re thinking that without the uber-tailored look, 6-foot frame, and designer styling (and with snot frozen to your face) it’s not going to look so fashionable and suggest trying to emulate the look on the right. For the details on the wrappers we’ve chosen, keep reading.

Victoria’s Secret, best known for their lingerie and televised fashion shows, has expanded their clothing and accessories options in recent years. What once started as a catalog selling tanks with built in bras and jeans suitable for your grandmother, the website has started selling additional brands, like BCBGirls, and has expanded their stock to include trendy items inspired by designer collections. Two remarkable items available at victoriassecret.com are boots taken straight from the runways of Balenciaga and

New York Magazine’s amazing online presence has taken a step up with their new Shop-A-Matic feature. With 283 women’s shoes to look at, you can pick boots, flats, platforms, or pumps and browse through pictures. The options are unique and have obviously been picked out by hand by someone very in the know. The David Bootie by Pink Studio, $99, is reminiscent of the Balenciaga witch boots Mary Kate Olsen wouldn’t be seen without, and the graduated patent leather pump by Prada, $550, is sure to become a museum-worthy piece someday.

Model citizen: Irina Lazareanu

By Andrea Thatcher on October 18th, 2007

Irina%20Lazareanu2.JPG
Born in Romania and raised in Quebec before moving to London at 13 to study ballet at the Royal Academy of Arts, model Irina Lazareanu is helping bring back the supermodel. She became friends with former Libertine rocker Pete Doherty while living in London. Kate Moss, Doherty’s girlfriend at the time, picked Lazareanu to appear in an issue of French Vogue, which Moss was guest editing. Moss also picked Lazareanu to be the face of her first collection for Topshop. Lazareanu’s rocker vintage style is muse to designers Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel and Nicolas Ghesquière of Balenciaga. Lazareanu says of her look, ”I’m very influenced by the whole ’60s-’70s London era, not only in terms of my clothes, but also in terms of the music I listen to, the movies I watch, the writers I read. Those influences probably translate into my personal style in an unconscious way.”

Trend watch: buy affordable jodphurs

By Andrea Thatcher on October 15th, 2007

Jodphur.JPG

If you love being the first to wear a trend that others might not dare touch, but don’t want to fork over a ton of money, try a pair of jodhpurs. After appearing on Balenciaga’s fall runway, jodhpurs have become the new pant look that the fashion insiders say they love, but not many people have actually been photographed in yet. Rumor has it that Gap will have a pair, but they’re not yet available on their Web site. If you can’t wait for Gap, try these “Jodphur Jean” pants from British store Warehouse, UK£45. Coutorture.com recommends pairing the horseback rider pants with these boots by Kurt Keiger, available at kurtgeiger.com for UK£140.

Nicholas Ghesquière hit the mark with his aesthetically colorful relaying of this season’s ‘tough look’ into spring and summer. Ghesquière manipulated bold floral patterns into fashion armor! While the box-shaped military-style tops and suit of armor-like shorts remained consistent throughout the show, the colors, patterns, and accents varied magnificently. Check out Catwalk Queen for more on the show.

For Balenciaga’s fall 2007 ready-to-wear collection, Nicholas Ghesquière created worldly, wearable pieces with influences ranging from Bali to upper-crust England.
