As we pointed out in our last post, metallics were hot on the AW 2011 catwalks. Balmain bought us the blazer, while Stella McCartney showed metallic pieces in sporty silhouettes, which is great news for the ladies who aren’t as girly as some.
And of course the highstreet is packed full of these sparkly lovelies, which brighten up any style, just in time for the Christmas party season.
Go for a simple tunic dress for a casual work party or go all out with a fierce bodycon number. If you’re not too keen on showing off those pins then there’s also a great range of metallic tees, which look great teamed up with shinny jeans.
See our top five picks in the gallery below.

What better way to stand out at that Christmas party than with a little metallic number.
Gold and silver fabrics were hot on the aw 2011catwalks with designers such as Balmain and Vivienne Westwood fashioning them into jackets and others such as Stella McCartney going for this fabric in frocks.
To get the look just right this season, let metallics take centre stage and keep accessories minimal. Team up blazers with skinny black jeans and a plain t-shirt for a simple yet affective look.

The 70s are a hot fashion topic right now. And while we love all the funky prints and denim the best style to come out of this era and into this season is of course the jumpsuit.
This little one piece has been around for a few seasons but for AW 2011 its taken on a wide legged silhouette and a satin, velvet or silk appearance.
If you want to wear one of these lovelies to that Christmas party then keep it simple. Add a thin waist belt to accentuate that wide leg and add some super high heels.
Finish off the look with a little leather jacket to go right back to that Studio 54 look.
See the gallery below for some designer inspiration.

The luxury label Balmain is most well-known for its opulent and glitzy designs
It looks like it’s time for label-lovers to start saving up their pennies and stretch out their overdrafts that teeny bit further, as high-powered superlabel Balmain announces the launch of its new diffusion line, Pierre Balmain, will happen in December.
The diffusion line aims to target a younger, more on-the-pulse market with a collection of more affordable pieces, stocking knitwear, basic tees, denim and tailoring for both men and women. When we say more affordable, it’s not that affordable, with some of the more glamorous pieces coming in at a cool £795, but we’re still going to want a piece of the action, even if we can only afford a T-shirt.
The director of Balmain, Alain Hivelin, said on the new label’s launch: “We see Pierre Balmain as a new and distinct brand that is inspired by the successes and history of a great house, but offers a look and product that respond to the needs and desires of today’s marketplace…. Our goal is to position Pierre Balmain as a new global brand that will be established in all the key international markets.”
To us, Balmain has always been the wild child at Paris Fashion Week – always fabulously over the top and rock and roll with sprayed-on silhouettes and brilliant metallics. Can we expect the same from their diffusion line, or will we be surprised? Watch this space.

Sad faces everyone because it looks like Balmain is losing a great designer.
That’s right Christophe Decarnin is leaving the fashion house.
The designer – famed for introducing the rock and military inspired look to the label – has announced he will depart the French fashion house, which he joined in 2005 before being made creative director in November 2007, though his successor has not yet been named.
Paying tribute to Christophe, Balmain CEO Alain Hivelin said: “Since 1945, the house of Pierre Balmain has been one of the leading French and international luxury brands. Christophe Decarnin’s work with the house’s design team contributed to the success that the brand has enjoyed in recent years.”
It is expected the fashion house will promote one of their current employees to the position of creative director.
Questions about Christophe’s future with Balmain were first raised last month when he was absent from their autumn/winter 2011-12 show in Paris.
However, at the time, a spokesperson cited medical reasons for his absence.
They said: “Christophe was feeling unwell and was asked to stay at home by doctor’s orders. It’s been a demanding season and unfortunately he couldn’t be at the show today. The collection was done completely under his creative direction. Now he needs to rest.”

Paris Fashion Week

Punk was the theme Balmain decided to run with for its SS2011 collection.
Skinny jeans with plenty of rips, safety pins and, what looked like DIY graffitied t-shirts marched down the catwalk.
There were roughly cut denim shorts black leather mini-skirts, the occasional corset and white double-breasted jackets, which were made to look sexy by being worn very tight (think about how you wore your shorts and tees when you were 15 and you’ll understand).
We can imagine many of you crafty fashion girls will be trying this look out yourself in the season to come but a word of warning. Balmain’s collection may look like it’s easy to copy but when you look closely you’ll see cuts are sharp, studs and crystals are carefully placed and those graffiti tees thought about.

Paris Fashion Week
By Andrea Petrou on September 29th, 2010
It’s been a busy month for fashionista as the various fashion weeks have taken them from New York to London and to Milan. However as Milan Fashion Week came to an end the fashion crowd were packing their bags and heading off in the direction of France for Paris Fashion Week.
Staring yesterday, the 9-day event will be host to 91 catwalk shows to keep the fashion crowd alert. Day one, which was yesterday, saw a few collections from up-and-coming designers like Aganovich, from London, and Anthony Vaccarello who was targeted by Vogue’s influential September issue.
And we have to say we were impressed with the latters designs.
Vaccarello sent his models down the catwalk in classic Parisian chic. Asymmetric structured dresses in black and black frock flounced down the catwalk alongside risque sheer styles that showed off more than a little bit of cleavage.
There were also backless bodices as well as rouched mini skirts and open blazers with nothing underneath. We need to be hitting that gym if we want to be wearing these designs next season.
Keep reading as we’ll be bringing you all the gossip from Balenciaga, Balmain, Celine and Givenchy – who will all be showing off their new creations here as well as Giles Deacon who is showcasing his first collection for Ungaro. Jean-Paul Gaultier willalso reveal his last ever collection for Hermes, before he hands over to Christophe Lemaire. It’s going to be very exciting.

Buttons were left on designer’s shelves over the summer period as bold zips took the “must have” crown and pushed themselves onto the front and back of dresses, tops, jackets and of course trousers.
However, this season buttons have battled back landing the top position in A/W 2010 wear.
They swarmed over the catwalks proving a military look at Burberry, became bold and brassy at Balmain and formed centre pieces for double breasted coats at Oscar de la Renta.
The key way to wear this style this season is by giving a nod to the military trend by choosing jackets with brass buttons. If this doesn’t rock your boat go for something a little bit more subtle and choose cardi’s with bold buttons, or keep it simple with a single oversize button strategically placed beneath a princess collar.
If your feeling a little bit experimental then why not go for buttons down the sides of trousers and skirts.
Here’s our top five button buys for A/W 2010.

Trend Alert
By Andrea Petrou on July 1st, 2010
Ahhh military. We talked about this trend yesterday when we gave you our top five military must haves, but we thought it was only right that we did a separate gallery for military trousers, afterall they’ve marched the trend right out of the 80s and into 2010.
Ever since Balmain showed these off in his SS2010 show, skinny military style trousers have replaced those baggy cargo styles and have become hugely popular.
And of course the highstreet has got wind of this, stocking a huge range of styles, which either scream military or just give a nod to the trend with brass buttons and khaki colours. We pick out the best 5.

Military is a trend that many women fear. It’s heavy looking, difficult to match up, and evokes memories of the 80s combat trousers we once used to wear (ours were elasticated, but to be fair we were only 9).
There’s been a few times since then that the military look has tried to make a comeback into the mainstream fashion world, think way back in the 90s when All Saints wore nothing but military pants, but it’s not really stood out as a “must-have” for a while.
Until now that is. The trend has fought back from all the negatives and was a main contender at the Balmain SS2010 show, which accentuated the look with brass buttons, peep toes lace-up boots and fitted military jackets. Skinny military style trousers replaced those baggy cargo styles and have become hugely popular. So much so that they sold out within days, and highstreet alternatives had the same success. Jean Paul Gaultier also gave a nod to the trend in his collection.
As expected, these nods have caused the highstreet to go into overdrive. Visit any store and you’ll find blazers with military style brass buttons, khaki tops and trousers, utility style dresses (we heart) and peep toe shoes.
We’ve put together our top five military must-haves for this season. And look out tomorrow for our skinny military trouser special.

We thought we wouldn’t have to be bearers of bad news again today (we thought Ugly Betty being axed was enough) but it seems the fashion world has other ideas with news that Balmain won’t be launching a diffusion line.
We were really excited last week when the fashion grapevine went into full swing (we didn’t report on it because we didn’t want to get your hopes up) claiming that the brand was going to launch a lower priced collection. However, it seems as though this is not the case.
A Balmain representative told Vogue: “There is no Balmain lower priced line. What I think you might be referring to is a capsule collection that was prepared for some Parisian retailers.”
If we were texting this story we’d finish it with a ”
” just to show how unhappy we are.

Seriously, what’s cooler than Balmain? Vintage Balmain. Penelope Cruz had her eye on this vintage piece for eight years and finally decided now was the time to wear it. I can’t help but fear that she stole some girl’s wedding dress out from under her, but glamorous, glitzy white gowns are the trend of the 2009 Oscars. Cruz won the Best Supporting Actress award for Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

There aren’t many people out there who can wear a head-to-toe runway look and make it look better than the model, but Jennifery Connelly really loves the challenge. First with her Balenciaga turn, and now (I think) more successfully with Balmain at last night’s premiere of He’s Just Not That Into You. Dressed in Christophe Decarnin’s revered Spring / Summer 2009 collection for Balmain, she not only pulled off more sequins and sparkles than Dolly Parton, but also showed us how to work the wide shoulder silhouette that we’re going to be seeing constantly in the coming months. Plus, I love the shoes and am so glad she stuck with them to complete the look. Other well-dressed attendees like Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore and Ginnifer Goodwin paled in comparison to Connelly’s fashion-forward look.

Catwalk Queen’s Gemma Cartwright writes…
Is Riccardo Tisci in cahoots with Christophe Decarnin? The edgy Givenchy show at Paris Fashion Week had a lot in common with the headline grabbing Balmain show from earlier this week. It’s a far cry from Julien Macdonald’s romantic tenure at the label, and harks back more to what we saw from Alexander McQueen while he was at the helm. Sharp cuts, interesting textures and a ‘western bondage’ theme saw models in jewelled body-con dresses, skintight trousers, textured lemon and beige mini dresses and leather bondage tops. Barbie-doll proportions and a lot of glitter and glitz added a bit of whimsy to the very polished, stylish look of Balmain’s spring 2009 collection. If Max Azria wants to see a new way to do a bandage dress, this is where he should look. There were lots of legs – in micro minis as well as cutaway front dresses that would have been more surprsing if Balmain had shown before Nina Ricci. Olivier Theyskens did them a bit bigger and better, but Balmain’s had a glamorous aesthetic of their own.
