Miranda Kerr says nothing makes her happier than her “little man” Flynn

By Andrea Petrou on October 10th, 2011

Miranda Kerr says nothing makes her happier than her “little man” Flynn.

The Australian model and her husband Orlando Bloom welcomed their 10-month-old son Flynn into the world in January and she admits nobody has ever had a bigger impact on her life than her baby.

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar magazine, she said: “I’d say what makes me happy is having this little man. I’m the happiest when I’m surrounded by those I love and we are in a natural environment … It’s the best thing I’ve ever done. Becoming a mother puts everything into perspective. You become more comfortable in your own skin.”

In the publication, Miranda poses naked, showing off her pert butt while lying on a bed and proves she has fully recovered her figure after giving birth.

Although she has to be in great physical condition for her career, the 28-year-old beauty insists she doesn’t deprive herself of culinary treats, she just limits the high calorie foods she eats.

Miranda said: “I always say life is about balance, not about depriving yourself. If you want something then I encourage you to have it. When you deprive yourself, you naturally crave it more.”

The Victoria’s Secret model also revealed she would consider following in the footsteps of her husband Orlando, 34, and try her hand at acting.

She said: “If someone approached me and it sounded interesting, I wouldn’t be opposed to it, but it’s not something I think about.”

Pictures: Rihanna in concert at the O2

By Andrea Petrou on October 6th, 2011

Rihanna may have taken the tube to her concert at the 02 but we’re sure she didn’t wear any of her stage attire on the way.

The singer looked hot in a crochet beaded bikini which she posed with alongside 50s style cars. She also gave a nod to the 80s with her neon pink shoe boots and bright yellow hoop earrings.

Also making an appearance was a short blue wet look mac, which showed off the singers booty, we’re sure there were no complaints from the males in the audience.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley keeps her figure thanks to three personal trainers

By Andrea Petrou on October 3rd, 2011

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has three personal trainers.

The British beauty – who is the face of Burberry Body – admits she needs to always be in the gym to maintain her trim physique, and has trainers in all three cities in which she works.

She said: “It takes lots and lots of hard work. I have three personal trainers – James Duigan in London, Jason Walsh in Los Angeles and my friend Justin in New York. That means there’s no excuse not to be in the gym wherever I go.”

In addition to a strict exercise regime, the 24-year-old model also controls what she eats, and tries to put few carbohydrates into her body.

She added to Britain’s Grazia magazine: “Everything starts with exercise. Then you want to look after yourself and put good food in your body.

“I have a really good response when I cut out carbs so that’s something I always do before a great event. I eat a high-protein diet and lots of greens.”

Jessica Alba loses baby weight with exercise but never weighs herself

By Andrea Petrou on October 3rd, 2011

Jessica Alba never weighs herself.

The gorgeous actress gave birth to her second child, Haven, six week ago and while she has dropped some of the baby weight quite easily with some exercise, Jessica doesn’t put herself under any pressure to lose the extra pounds.

She said: “I didn’t gain too much time so that made a difference and I started working out as my doctor said it was fine. I try to be healthy and balanced. I have definitely not lost the baby weight but it’s coming off slowly but surely. I don’t weigh myself. I just see what clothes fit.”

However, despite her exercise regime Jessica admitted she often allows herself a calorific treat every so often, especially when her husband Cash Warren – with whom she also has a three-year-old daughter Honor – orders dessert.

She told Britain’s OK! magazine: “I try not to indulge in super-fattening food but I still have desserts as Cash always orders them and they taste so good. It’s just everything in moderation.”

Shiny loves: Sexy one-piece bathing suits for summer

By emilyborrett on June 29th, 2011

Lace Print Plunge Suit

Picture 1 of 7

This sexy neon swimsuit reminded us so irresistibly of Christopher Kane's Spring/Summer '11 collection that we just had to feature it. You can find it on Asos.

I don’t know about you, but now it’s summer I’m starting to get the annual pre-bikini anxiety that always leaves me fretting, frantically doing sit-ups and smothering myself in Fake Bake the night before I go on holiday. Ever since I was old enough to wear one, bikinis have caused me absolutely nothing but stress and woe. Sometimes I wish they had never been invented. So I’m deciding to stick two middle fingers up to two-piece peer-pressure this summer for something I can feel a little bit more comfortable in. Today at Shiny we’re going to be looking at one-pieces, which apparently are sexy again – THANK GOD.

I love the high street’s new flux of swimsuits available because they are so much more forgiving than two-pieces – except now they’re sexy as well as functional. The first swimsuit I laid my eyes on in my search for flattering swimwear just happened to be a gorgeous yellow lace-effect costume from Asos.com which reminded me of Christopher Kane’s neon lace dresses and skirt suits – so on trend this summer, and kind to curvy and skinny girls alike. The result is a modern, contemporary design that has just the right of sexiness for me.

Another favourite from my search was a gingham strapless costume from Frost French that reminded me of old photographs of Marilyn Monroe on the beach. It’s a very vintage-feel design that will hide any stray tummy wobbles, but emphasise your hips and waist so that you can cut  a bombshell figure on the beach. I have to say that I love fifties-inspired swimwear but I don’t like time-warp head-to-toe dressing – keep your beach look modern with some contemporary sunglasses and leather sandals

What do you think about the comeback of the one-piece? Do you think it’s fantastic that they’re back in vogue or do you think they should stay a thing of the eighties? Check out the gallery above and let us know.

ShinyStyle loves: Vintage-style swimwear for the beach

By emilyborrett on April 8th, 2011

Cupped Bandeau Spot Bikini

Picture 1 of 7

As we continue to gratefully bask in this amazing Spanish weather that’s sweeping over Britain, ShinyStyle’s thoughts have turned to swimwear. Something so simple, but so easy to get wrong; as I type I have about ten different bikinis lying forlornly unworn in my knicker drawer, that have been bought on the internet on a whim and then never worn.

But this spring, all the trends are working in swimwear’s favour – florals, fruit and bold digital prints are the things to be seen wearing, and we have high hopes for swimwear on the high street this year. Will 2011 be the year that Britain (especially me) finally gets it right?

Our mantra for this summer, we’ve decided, is going to be “flirtation and glamour”. With designers referencing the likes of Brigitte Bardot, Diana Dors and Jane Fonda at the moment in their collections, now is the time to discover your inner sex kitten. Our favourite place for beach-siren swimwear is Urban Outfitters – they have a gorgeous selection of Marilyn Monroe-esque bikinis and one pieces, which we guarantee will make heads turn.

Our other favourite shop for pin-up swimwear is the excellent What Katie Did, who have an expertise in tailoring their bikinis and underwear to create the illusion of a perfect film-star hourglass silhouette. So even if you don’t think you’ve got it, you can flaunt it. Be prepared to pay a little more for their designs, but you’ll get beautiful contour tailoring for your money and a well-made piece that will last forever.

Our number one pick? The cool plaid bikini from Urban Outfitters – we think the grungy tartan print gives an otherwise retro style a cool and modern edge. Check it out along with our other star buys in the gallery above.

Why swimwear shopping isn’t always smooth sailing

By laurenbravo on June 24th, 2010

ursulaandress.jpgAnother year, another swimsuit, another failure in the name of lycra. I don’t know why it is that with swimming costumes, as with jeans, haircuts and chocolate brownies, we spend our lives in pursuit of The One. We begin each summer daring to believe that this will be the year we’ll find the perfect swimsuit. It will glow from the rail when we walk by, with Handel’s Messiah playing discreetly in the background. It will suck us in where we want to be sucked in, cup us where we want to be cupped, make our skin look radiant and our hair more shiny, and never go see-through or baggy around the bum or fall off on a flume in front of an adolescent school group.

But instead of The One, we get an endless parade of The Wrongs. It seems fair to reason that the less fabric there is in a garment, the more things can potentially be dreadful about it. Nun’s habits are a much of a muchness; they always do their job very well. Bikinis, meanwhile, and underwear, cocktail dresses, hats – all the tiny things in our wardrobes – are fraught with potential faux-pas.

It’s also baffling that after everything scientists have achieved in the last hundred years, the field of swimwear hasn’t developed much beyond a stretchy hanky tied over our rude bits, and a million wafty ways of covering up the whole disaster. There are kaftans, sarongs, towelling playsuits galore, but nobody has stopped to say ‘hmm, why not just make what’s underneath it a tad more flattering instead?’ It still surprises me that they haven’t yet tried to make a swimsuit out of boned corseting. Or given one sleeves. I don’t let my upper arms out under normal circumstances, why should it suddenly be different because I’m immersed in water with half my hair stuck to my face?

As someone who hasn’t worn a bikini since John Major was in Downing Street, I can only appreciate them as an observer. And my main observation is this: triangle bikinis scare me, because I am convinced that they will slip off the wearer at any moment. Sturdier, underwired bikinis are better, but bring with them all the same difficulties as an actual bra in the pinching, squeezing, bulging and bagging arena.

Of course there are also tankinis, the eternal saviour of every body-conscious woman. In theory they’re the perfect solution – they offer the coverage of a swimming costume, but are far easier to go to the loo in and can be rolled up for tanning opportunities. In practise, however, a good tankini is hard to come by. With far fewer prints and shapes to choose from, more often than not they just scream, “I’m wearing this to cover my paella belly!” while the bikinis slink on by.

FLORA_1898:1-PRINT 1.jpgThen we have the one-piece. so enigmatic a garment that it pretty much warrants its own thesis. For the past few years it has been rapidly shrinking, a new piece of fabric cut away every season until we have been left with something a cyclist might wear to stop people hitting them. Much as I’m in favour of lycra-based experimentation, designers need to learn: we are not stupid. Putting a tiny strip of fabric down the middle of a bikini does not make us believe it is a proper swimsuit.

But enough of the ranting; now onto the good news. There’s a new wave of swimwear arriving this season, with more emphasis on shape and less on skin. We’re completely in love with Red or Dead’s new line Rescue Me!, which is full of beautifully cut one-pieces and demure, well-structured bikinis in the brand’s trademark fun prints. With their adorable, British seaside vibe, these are cossies that hark back to a time before gold lamé and hipbones took over everything. Particular stars are the low-legged Vintage one-piece with sweet nautical buttons, £62, and this Flora number with attached skirt (right), £67 – perfect for balancing chunky thighs or just a spot of poolside twirling.

FrostFrench bikini.jpgFrostFrench has also hit the mark with its Floozie range at Debenhams. Despite a disconcerting volume of strapless bikini tops (welcome to sag city), they’ve also done a pleasingly retro swimsuit with chevron panels, and this gorgeous halterneck bikini (left), which can be paired with tie-side briefs or boy-cut shorts.

For reference points, look beyond the Lowes, Lottes and Geldofs of this world and focus on some true swimwear icons. Esther Williams in Ziegfeld Follies. Marilyn Monroe in Some Like it Hot. Ursula Andress as Honey Ryder in the belted white bikini. Bo Derek, running along that beach (braids optional). Think swimwear that hugs your figure, not hangs off it. Swimwear that makes you feel powerful, not vulnerable. Swimwear so good that you consider wearing it with a skirt and heels to the pub. If you find all of that, girls, you may have found The One.

If not – hey, there’s always next year.

Fashion Crush: Bikini from H! by Henry Holland’s swimwear range

By Andrea Petrou on June 2nd, 2010

Henry Holland swimwear.jpg />

We’ve covered a range of bikini stories today on ShinyStyle but we felt that this bikini from H! by Henry Holland‘s high-summer swimwear range deserved to be labelled as our Fashion Crush of the day.

This gorgeous on-trend floral bikini, is a designer steal coming in at £10 for the top and £10 for the bottoms and looks fantastic teamed up with this leather waistcoat, which again comes in at a very reasonable £35. We think it’ll look amazing teamed up with some denim shorts and flip-flops too.

And it’s also modelled by Fiona Kennedy who entered a competition to have her face included in a one-off print designed by Henry Holland and used on a handbag and scarf in the Autumn H! by Henry Holland range. Henry was so impressed with Fiona’s entry he decided to approach her to model his high summer swim range.

Designer chic modelled by a real person, can it get any better than this?

Trend Alert: Beach Bikinis

By Andrea Petrou on June 2nd, 2010

The sun is shining and many of you are probably counting down to that summer beach holiday.

And with the spring/summer season fashion in full flow there’s a huge amount of swimwear out there to suit all kind of shapes.

Many stores such as Miss Selfridge and Oasis also offer separates for ladies with smaller or bigger upper halves and Ultimo is also a great place for those out there that have been blessed with bigger busts. On the other end of the spectrum some highstreet stores also cater for sporty type figures offering padded cups and different tops to really enhance what we’ve been blessed with.

And there’s also great alternatives for those who don’t feel comfortable in flashing their tum or who aren’t too keen on wearing briefs.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be bringing you different ranges for different figures and tastes but to kick start the swimwear style we’ve put together a gallery of on-trend bikinis so you can really make an entrance to the pool or the beach.

Have your say: Should Primark be criticised for selling padded bikinis for 7 year olds?

By Andrea Petrou on April 15th, 2010

Primark.jpg
A few weeks ago Katie Price came under our Shinystyle spotlight for announcing that she was thinking of creating a range of make-up for children and judging by your votes many of you agreed that it was encouraging children to grow up too quickly.

And it seems she’s not the only one accused of encouraging this. Primark this week has come under fire from MPs and parenting charities after its decision to sell padded bikinis for 7 year olds.

David Cameron joined Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Mumsnet kicked off at the store, which has since removed the £4 range from shelves.

Following complaints Primark issued a statement claiming: The company has stopped the sale of this product line with immediate effect. Primark will donate all the profits made from this product line to a children’s charity, and apologises to customers for any offence caused.’

But it doesn’t look as though the chain will be getting off that easily as yesterday politicians were still furious

Mr Cameron said yesterday: ‘There is a classic example today where Primark are apparently pushing padded bras on seven-year-olds, which I think is completely disgraceful.

‘The sort of country I want is one where it is not just the Government that feels outraged about the early commercialisation and sexualisation of our children, but companies should stop doing it, they should take some responsibility,’ he added.

Do you think Primark behaved immorally by selling these bikinis or do you think it’s just a lot of fuss over nothing. Vote and leave your comments below and let us know.
