Twill Slacks

These brilliant purple high-waisted slacks are sporty, sexy and on-trend. You can find them at American Apparel.

Fashion Week is long gone now, but spring is on the way – there’s no better way to celebrate that than with a graphic explosion of colour, as seen at Jil Sander (pictured). The fashion house’s long eye-popping column skirts, teamed with fluorescent lipstick and beautifully cut plain white tee-shirts, has become one of the most referenced catwalk collections of the year. Beautifully simple, youthful and fun, this is one trend we can get behind.

It’s so easy as a lover of the high street to fall into the trap of black, black, black. Little black dresses, black heels, black everything. Very classic, yes, and a bit Chanel, but – whisper it – a tiny bit boring. If you’re not interested in vampy dramatic black clothing or ballerina-esque neutrals, then this might be a trend that you want to try out.

It’s a trend that might be tricky to nail if you’re new to experimenting with colour – believe me, I know I definitely am – but the key to this look is to keep things simple. For full-on eye-popping fashion choose a statement piece in a vivid colour, such as a maxi skirt or pair of tailored trousers, and team it up with simple accessories and a clean white shirt for a look that’s both youthful and modern. Or, if you’re feeling a bit too timid to meet the trend head-on, give a nod to the look with a fluorescent handbag or pair of heels. River Island is fantastic for bright shoes – check out their “Fashion Fix” section for a selection of eye-popping shoes.

Also high on our colour-popping hit list is American Apparel. It may seem an obvious choice, but you really need to look no further for a wide range of sexy, youthful basics in eye-wateringly bright colours. We love their twill slacks in bright purple.

Asos Premium Flower Detail Hat

If you want to rock nude the romantic way, this turban-style floral hat will look incredible worn with head-to-toe neutrals. You can find it at Asos.

It’s been no secret for a while now that in fashion, nude tones are hot, hot, hot. Ever since pale peaches, beiges and neutral greys have become en vogue they’ve been absolutely everywhere, from buttery leather totes at Mulberry to refreshingly pretty and feminine blazers at your local Topshop. With the emergence of red-hot colour being the next explosive trend on the catwalk, as seen at Jil Sander and House of Holland, you might be mistaken to think that nude is on it’s way out – but au contraire, it’s not. With the dazzling success of December’s “Black Swan”, starring Natalie Portman, ballet-beautiful fashion is more in than ever.

Wondering how to carry these colours into your spring/summer wardrobe as the year continues? Make like Stella McCartney, who boldly opted for pale pink and peach skinny trouser suits in her S/S 2011 collection, and choose jackets and slim-fitting chinos in nude tones for a look that is feminine, yet manages to be fashion forward. When it comes to eveningwear, anything goes – romance is the word for the whole season and you can opt for as many ruffles, embellishments and pleats as you like.

Style spotlight: Kate Hudson’s laidback cool

By Andrea Petrou on February 4th, 2011

By Emily Borrett.

Ever since I saw actress Kate Hudson doing a brilliant turn as the dreamy 70s groupie Penny Lane in Almost Famous, I’ve had a bit of a fashion crush on her. With her blonde waves hair, golden skin, bubbling laugh and sweet smile, she was the epitome of laidback California cool. Whether she’s out shopping in a sloppy maxi-skirt and shades, or at an event looking relaxed and on-trend in a blazer jacket and tuxedo jacket, she always manages to look amazing without trying too hard. And it’s been a good a year for her – she’s embarked on a long-term relationship with Muse singer Matt Bellamy, shot a cover for Elle magazine and now, it’s recently been announced, has fallen pregnant with Bellamy’s child. She’s just one of the various gorgeous celebrities to have recently announced pregnancies, but we think she’s going to be one of the yummiest mummies of the year. We can’t wait to see how she styles up her baby bump.

So here’s Shiny Style’s fashion salute to the fabulous Miss Hudson – congratulations on the pregnancy, Kate, and keep on doing what you’re doing! Here’s a gallery of her best outfits over the past year.
