Michael Kors Spring/Summer 2012
New York was transported to the plains of Africa yesterday as the legendary American designer Michael Kors unveiled his new Spring/Summer 2012 collection, which had clear tribal world-traveller vibes with rusty khaki shades and lush animal prints.
Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is all about the Michael Kors show, so naturally we were excited to see what the newly-wed designer had come up with this time. Like Diane Von Furstenberg earlier this week, there was an obvious African inspiration, though Kors’ designs and prints were less graphic and more earthy than DVF’s, working in shades of khaki green, stone, fawn and rust with a few splashes of zebra and snake-print here and there.
It was primarily a casualwear collection, sportswear and casual separates being what Michael Kors usually does best, but naturellement he didn’t leave us high and dry when it came to glamour, either. His high-waisted 50s-silhouette swimming costumes and bikinis came either in rustic-looking batik or snake-print, while his evening dresses and skirts came as incredible weathered-looking ruffled creations made out of tiny feathery strips layered over one another, in cheetah print, cream and scarlet, leaving the models looking like amazing exotic birds.
All in all, it’s another excellent collection from Kors that I can’t really fault. The styling was perfect, too – I’m so hankering for those knee-high black leather gladiator sandals that all the models got to wear. I think teaming the edgy fetish-y footwear with draped batik fabrics and animal prints is a cool, modern new take on the world-traveller look.
Check out the gallery above to see the highlights from Michael Kors’ Spring/Summer 2012 collection.

Jessie J wore a quirky lilac-fringed bodysuit for her performance at V Festival
If you’re sad that summer is pretty much over now and you’d like to cling on to your louche, festival-style outfits as much longer as possible, it’s worth taking note of the summer’s fringing trend which will happily still be wearable when winter comes. We spotted more than a couple of artists rocking the trend at V Festival over the weekend, as Jessie J wore a quirky eighties-inspired bodysuit with purple fringed sleeves for a dramatic take on dancewear and Katy B teamed black skinny jeans and a band T-shirt with her fringed black cardigan for a 70s hard rock look.
Wild West-influenced styles are huge for this Autumn/Winter, a look that fringing and tasselled pieces will fit into nicely. For wrapping up warm you could try Urban Outfitter’s amazing plaid hooded cape with tassels (checks and tartan are massive this season too) and team with a little dress and opaque tights for a snug and chic back-to-school look. Or if you want to go a bit more down the evening-wear route try a showgirl-style fringed dress like the amazingly sexy dip-dyed red one that we found at Rare – big earrings and some simple high-heeled sandals will make you look like a glamorous heiress.
Of course, if you’re tentative when it comes to the idea of head-to-toe fringing and can’t get the image of Dolly Parton out of your head, a simple fringed bag or accessory can add a touch of laidback bohemian cool to an outfit. We love ASOS’ black fringed hoop earrings – so Edie Sedgwick.
Check out the gallery for our favourite fringed pieces on the high street.

Red Chelsea Girl Print Jersey Dress
Jane Birkin is still one of our ultimate fashion icons, so I was excited today when I clocked this red Chelsea Girl dress (above) which is just so Birkin and bohemian. From the cool red folk-print to the thigh-skimming hemline and slight bell sleeves, this is 60s-inspired dressing at it’s best – it has a total Woodstock feel.
The dress is part of River Island’s revived Chelsea Girl line, which produces pieces inspired by the 60s era that the Chelsea Girl store was originally popular in. Also in the CG collection are brown suede hotpants, Missoni-style knits and Mick Jagger-esque blouses in eye catching shades of orange and red. We love everything in the range, but the red printed mini dress that we’ve featured has to be our absolute favourites.
Along with featuring the dress we’ve suggested a few pieces in the gallery that would go perfectly with it – just remember when styling a dress like this that Madam Birkin liked to keep things simple and carefree. Any accessories were chic, delicate and discreet. Our favourite piece to go with a dress like this is a good pair of Swedish Hasbeens; now we know that they’re not exactly cheap but a pair of their clog-style sandals are so European chic and will last forever. We also recommend with a dress like this that a simple vintage gold pendant is a pretty addition to an outfit that will compliment the folk-print of the mini dress perfectly – our favourite pendant is a pretty golden key from Nicole Richie’s jewellery line, House of Harlow, which you can find in the gallery above.
Check out the gallery to see our star buy, the red Chelsea Girl dress, along with pieces to make it an outfit.

Jane looked like true rock and roll royalty in a simple micro-minidress and a seventies pendant. This is one girl that didn't ever have to try to look good
We’ve all been going mad here at ShinyStyle for the seventies and boho trends over the last few weeks, so it seems only fair to pay tribute to one of the trend’s most important icons, Jane Birkin. The actress and singer was right in the middle of it all through the late sixties and seventies and was one of that period’s most well-remembered and well-dressed women.
The then-lover and collaborator of French lothario Serge Gainsbourg, and an impressive film actress, everyone wanted a piece of her. It’s no wonder that Hermes designed a bag in her name in 1984.
You know that you’re obviously a big deal when women like Kate Moss are citing you as one of their main style inspirations. When you look at photos of Jane from the period which she is so famous for, she embodies the laid-back cool hippy spirit of that time: bare feet, scruffy hair, denim and floaty prints which are – surprise surprise – all parts of pretty much the coolest trend right now.
In celebration of Jane Birkin, retro style and all things seventies, we’ve put together a gallery with some of the actress’ best looks and pieces on the high street to recreate them. Aren’t we good to you, readers?

Asos Maxi Dress with Ruffled Sleeves
This gorgeous dress is such a statement that you don't need to add anything to make this an outfit - and it'll look just as good on the beach as at a party. Find it here.
Whether you’re into over-the-top 70s-inspired glamour, huge hair and all, or more laidback hippy-girl style, there are different ways to rock one of this summer’s hottest trends: bohemian. When I first heard that this trend was tipped to come back I felt a little uneasy (who doesn’t remember the style’s heinous comeback in the beginning of the noughties? No, Britney Spears, that yak-wool gilet and paisley babydoll smock don’t look good on you) but this time around the look is being given a little more sexiness, a little more glamour and versatility.
Yesterday, Shiny’s lovely editor Andrea showed us which stars are rocking the trend best this year, featuring the likes of Sienna Miller, Nicole Richie and Kate Moss (no surprises there). The key thing to take note of is that instead of heaping on the accessories and crazy folk prints until you look like a mad old woman that runs a candle shop, keep it simple.
Going out for a relaxed day with friends in the sunshine? Opt for a sweet boho-printed sundress with some vintage accessories and some ankle boots a la Sienna for a look that’s cool but not too try-hard. Or if you’re going out for a party and you’re sick of your regular uniform of minidresses and heels, go for a beautifully simplistic maxi dress with some gold seventies-esque jewellery and tousled hair – it’s a look that will walk the line between dressed-down and sexy glamour perfectly.
We’ve found some of the best boho pieces on the internet for you readers and whacked it all into one lovely gallery – whether you’re looking for a new wardrobe staple or just some accessories to round off an outfit, it’s all there. Check out our gallery above!

Soft and delicate in pale silk at Cannes Film Festival, we think Lou can pull of fairy-esque prettiness just as well as her trademark leather and lace
It’s going to be hard to come back down to Earth after yesterday’s Royal Wedding madness (didn’t Kate Middleton look beautiful, just like a 21st century Grace Kelly?) but, alas, life goes on, and it’s time that we tidy our Union Jack bunting away. Our thoughts are travelling back to Paris today to take a look at one of France’s most beautiful, rock and roll fashion enigmas – Lou Doillon, daughter of style icon Jane Birkin and one of Karl Lagerfeld’s fabulous couture-clad harem.
Always seen in attendance at Chanel’s most exclusive dinners, cocktail parties and launches, and often hanging off the arm of Herr Lagerfeld himself, the actress is a strong patron of Chanel and lends the label’s designs attitude and edge in bucketfuls. With her shaggy brunette hair, French smile and razor-sharp cheekbones, Doillon’s is a face that you couldn’t mistake anywhere whether it’s at a Vogue party or in the front rows at Paris Fashion Week. She is, by the way, always at the front row at PFW – we want this girl’s life so much! Oh, and did we mention that she is the muse for Givenchy?
So many celebrities at the moment try hard to work the European bohemian look, but it is obvious from Lou’s family roots that this is one girl that doesn’t have to try hard at all.
With Jane Birkin as her mother and French director Jacques Doillon, it’s obvious that this is one actress with first-hand experience with the bohemian lifestyle. We’re completely in love with her nonchalant laid-back style, and it’s clear to see why Karl is too. Check out our gallery for our favourite Lou Doillon looks.
