Top Five knee high boots for AW 2011

By Andrea Petrou on October 20th, 2011

It’s good news for fans of the knee high boot, with this trend walking right back in for this season.

Gone are the over-the-knee boots with their shorter cousins being paraded by Prada, YSL and Jaeger on the AW 2011 catwalks.

Give a nod to the 60s and wear a pair with a mini skirt or go for a more daytime 40s look and team them up with a midi skirt. For those who want to keep it casual, the over skinny jeans, or with a long knitted sweater looks are also hot.

Buy a pair now and step right into style. Below are our top five. Just click on the links to buy.

Christian Louboutin says women wear heels for “seduction”

By Andrea Petrou on October 18th, 2011

Christian Louboutin believes women wear high heels because they are empowering.

The shoe designer – renowned for his use of a bright red under-sole on all of his footwear – says men and women have different attitudes to shoes, with the female sex wearing heels for “seduction” purposes.

He explained to the Sunday Times newspaper: “There is an element of seduction in shoes that doesn’t exist for men. Think about Marlene Dietrich crossing her legs – the whole attitude. The language starts with the shoe and radiates over the whole body. A woman can be sexy, charming, witty or shy with her shoes. Shoes for men are about elegance or wealth; they are not playing with the inner character.

“That’s why women are happy to wear painful shoes. For some a little discomfort is balanced by something else, which has to do with desire. You feel yourself, empower yourself, know yourself. You are aware of your body. This little act of discomfort pays off in lots of other ways.”

Christian has previously revealed he measures how good his shoes are by what they look like on a naked woman.

He said: “The ultimate must still look good when a woman is naked. The design that encapsulates my career is the Pigalle, a low-cut, high-heeled pump. It’s so subtle in that it adds something sexy to the body, but you don’t immediately know that it’s the shoe that is making the difference.”

ShinyStyle loves: Jeffrey Campbell for Office

By emilyborrett on August 9th, 2011

We’ve been huge fans of Jeffrey Campbell’s edgy and wildly outrageous shoe designs ever since we first clapped eyes on them on the American clothing store Nastygal.com. His often sculptural, avant-garde and loudly colourful shoes have had us coming over all funny with severe shoe lust – so we’re incredibly happy that some his designs are now being stocked specially in Office.

Pixie Geldof is already a huge fan of the JC heels that are being stocked there – and it’s not hard to see why our favourite party girl is all in a tizz over the designs, as it is a small, compact collection of edgy ankle-breakingly high platforms and stacked heels made out of sparkles, leather and velvet. Want to make your party outfit more exciting, Pixie-style? Try teaming a vampy LBD with a pair of Jeffrey Campbell’s black velvet platform-heel mary jane heels, which you can find in the gallery above, which will lend any outfit a sexy and retro twist.

We can’t say these shoes are going to be a steal, as prices are over £100 per pair. But it might be worth setting aside a little of your savings to get your mitts on a pair before they sell out, as we guarantee Jeffrey Campbell’s shoes will be a smash hit in the hit.

Check out our gallery above to see the JC heels stocked at Office.

Paris Fashion Week: Kenzo A/W 2011

By Andrea Petrou on March 7th, 2011

By Emily Borrett.

Kenzo A/W 2011

Picture 1 of 22
Picture 1 of 22

It was a return to cool, slouchy bohemian style yesterday at Kenzo’s A/W 2011 show. Famed for their explosively vibrant florals and bold colours, this season saw the label working in more muted tones of dark blues, browns and creams that we think will work perfectly come winter.

Behind a huge lit-up display of what seemed like half folk art, half electric doilies, models came down the runway in long floaty hemlines that fluttered around leather studded ankle boots. Maxi-dresses in trademark Kenzo florals were worn with slouchy wax gilets and fur hoods. Combining the heritage trend with a hard, studded edge, we think we can spy a boho revival just around the corner.
This season’s collection was a lot more subtle than the last, with the label opting for more understated palettes in the fabric – olive green and black were favourites – and surprisingly pretty peekaboo hints of lace, which skirted along hemlines and necklines, showing a feminine side to the fashion house’s approach to design that we haven’t seen before. The maxi dress trend looks like it’s going to be here to stay for a fair while longer, if Kenzo’s collection is anything to go by – we predict that come Autumn we’ll all be teaming delicate floor-length dresses with casual boots and wax Barbour-style jackets.

A/W Trends: Top five boots

By Andrea Petrou on August 27th, 2010

The autumn weather already seems to have hit the UK, forcing us to replace our flip-flops and gladiator sandals with boots and waterproof shoes. If you, like me hadn’t anticipated to be donning that A/W wear quite so soon, you’ll sympathise when I tell you I had to track down my last season footwear becuase I hadn’t yet decided what new season pairs to go for.

There’s a range of different styles to choose from this season. If you want to channel the designer look then leather ankle boots complete with fur lining, a la Burberry, are a great step in the right direction.  If fur isn’t your thing then you could also opt for the lace up trend, which has already been channelled by celebrities including  Taylor Momsen.

And if that still doesn’t appeal then fear not, because the traditional knee high boot is still lurking around. However, like with every season this has been given a slight revamp.

View the gallery below for my top five.

Autumn fashion crush: Fur lined boots

By admin on August 16th, 2010

We love the summer, butthere’s a tiny part of us that craves the autumn/winter season for the sheer amount of new fashion items we can add to our wardrobes.

Although it may seem a teeny tiny bit early to be buying autumn clothes, the highstreet has begun stocking must have items, which, if aren’t snapped up quickly won’t be around for when the nights get darker and the days colder.

One thing we urge you to buy as soon as your bank card allows are these cute fur lined boots from New Look, which give a nod to Burberry’s A/W 2010 collection and will keep you warm and on-trend throughout the winter months.

Trend alert: Top five tanning must haves

By Shiny writer on July 29th, 2010

My holiday tan is fading fast and leaving me for people who are out on a beach topping theirs up. And if you’re experiencing this too, you’ll know how depressing it is.

There are a few ways to get that holiday tan back, firstly you could take to the park and coax the sun out (although judging by today’s weather you’re more likely to get rain), top up on a sunbed (no I don’t recommend this), pay for another holiday, or do it yourself safely with fake tan.

If like me you are inclined to go for the latter then there’s hundreds of fake tanning products on the market with everyone from Primark to St Tropez offering these.

And, if you pick the right ones then you’ll avoid those tell tale streaks, which have always been associated with these. I’ve picked out my top five tanning must-haves to help you top up or give you a head start before you go.

Armed and Glamorous: Can you work the military look?

By laurenbravo on May 20th, 2010

wenn5363147.jpgMilitary is one of those trends that strikes fear into the heart of many a committed shopper. It’s notoriously difficult to wear and has so many unpleasant associations – the mid 90s, Jodie Marsh, war – that many of us steer clear altogether. But that might prove hard this season, as not since All Saints topped the charts has the khaki colourway been so cool.

WAG’s favourite Balmain marched the look down the runway (left), with brassy detailing and fierce boots, while Max Mara, Jean Paul Gaultier and Alexander Wang all showed collections with a distinct utilitarian flavour. You’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a default move of the fashion pack, to ‘go military’ every few years as a backlash against all the cupcake-cute florals that spring and summer inevitably dish up. But who, apart from Demi Moore and Scary Spice, can really pull it off?

Well, if the high street is to be believed, we all can. This time round the look is less GI Jane and more Little Drummer Boy, with buttons, embellishments and epaulettes adding some glitz to the mix, while shapes are a combination of structured and soft – think cropped jackets with draped jersey trousers and heels. The colours are softer too, with flashes of pink, coral and nude livening up the army tones. And best of all, there’s no camouflage print in sight.

It’s a move away from the purposeful butch of previous military trends, which tended to feel fancy dress if you let your Girl Power mask slip momentarily and squealed, or something. The military woman of 2010 is a hardy sort, make no mistake, but she’s more likely to be knocking back a cocktail than doing a jumping high-kick over a tank. She’s an adventurer. She wears peg-legged khaki trousers with industrial wedges and a softly draped blazer. She goes from the office to the bar without needing to run home and change. She never complains that her feet hurt.

But can we be the military woman? I’m a pacifist, for a start, but then fashion has never been too concerned with the reality of its motifs. Hooker boots? Lolita dresses? You see my point. Besides, the stumbling block for me, as I’m sure with lots of you, is the colours. Khaki and its dirgy cousins, stone, taupe and (shudder) beige have always been style no-gos in my head. They are colours for grown-ups; they feel ‘chic’ rather than fun. all-saints.jpg

I’ve ventured into the realms of military only once since I was 12, and that was with a parka. Having seen Quadrophenia a few too many times, I thought the mod staple would channel some sixties cool into my festival look, so I wore it for a summer over flowery dresses and blouses. I relegated it to the back of the wardrobe when I realized it made me look like a dumpy Geography teacher on a field trip. And there we have the most crucial rule of military dressing: clothe, do not conceal, your assets.

Those of us blessed with lean, boyish frames can do the parkas, the Breton tops and the braces to their hearts’ content, but my shapelier sisters need to take it in another direction. To embrace your lady lumps while staying utilitarian, try mixing in the underwear as outerwear trend – khaki shorts or trousers with a silky pink camisole is a great place to start. Or you could steer it toward safari and work a shirt dress or playsuit, keeping shoes flat and make-up low key to avoid the Anne Summers Does Solider Girl look.

Or if you’re still unconvinced, there are always accessories. Beaten leather satchels are having a massive moment right now, and wearing one with a cross-body strap is an easy nod to combat style. Likewise aviator sunnies, army boots and jewellery that looks like battle armour. Or failing all else, just put on Never Ever and pretend to be one of the Appletons. The 90s did worse things, after all.

Tried and tested: foundations of the future

By laurenbravo on March 28th, 2010

Foundationpalette.jpg

When did shopping for makeup turn into a science lesson? The secret to a flawless face used to be water, fresh air and eating apples while frolicking in the middle of a cornfield; now, there is a positive laboratory’s worth of fancy-pants formulas waiting to take our skin from nice to NASA-approved.

The upper end of the cosmetics market has long been home to mystifying science-baffle, with all their ‘nanotechnology’ this and ‘kelp minerals‘ that. But now the effect is leaking onto the humble high street, and one trip to Boots is like double A-level chemistry all over again.

So here at ShinyStyle, we’ve done your homework for you with a round-up of the new, space-age and downright fruity foundations on the market. There are ‘photochromatic pigments’ doing battle with blue sapphire and ginger extract in a bid to make us look like Zooey Daschanel. Textures are getting exciting too, with mousses, creams, minerals and ‘soufflés’ all competing with the traditional liquid as the best way to give good face. But does the most futuristic blurb necessarily mean the best results?

Revlon PhotoReady Makeup – £12.99 for 30ml – 6/10

Buy it online here

They say: “Get poreless airbrushed skin in any light. Photochromatic pigments bend and reflect light to erase every flaw.”

We say: This has a nicer texture than most liquid foundations, but still felt a little sticky while drying. As for the ‘photochromatic pigments’, there was a radiant shimmer but the colour tended a little too dangerously towards the oompa loompa for our tastes.

Loreal Matte Morphose – £9.99 for 30ml – 8/10

Buy it online here

They say: “A transformation you can see and feel, with a 12hour luminous matte finish. Pores and wrinkles look smoother.”

We say: Yum. With its lovely moussey texture, this self-proclaimed ‘soufflé foundation’ made us think of dessert (but be warned, it doesn’t taste as good as it looks). The colours all looked a little dark, but went on smoothly and blended beautifully well on the skin. Somewhere between foundation, powder, concealer and pudding, it gave particularly good coverage under the eyes.

Max Factor Second Skin – £13.99 for 30ml – 5/10

Buy it online here

They say: “Now you can create a finish so flawless it’s virtually undetectable even to the professionals…Second Skin uses clever multi-tonal pigment technology to smooth over and blend flawlessly into your own natural complexion in seconds.”

We say: Now, we don’t know about you, but if we wanted our makeup to be ‘virtually undetectable’, we just wouldn’t bother buying any. More a tinted moisturiser than a foundation, this was beautifully silky and slipped on nicely, but the ultra-sheer ‘second skin’ effect was a little too much like our first skin (the one we’re trying to cover up in the first place). Only the flawless need apply.

Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation – £9.99 for 30ml – 4/10

Buy it online here

They say: “Gives you 70% more radiance and a flawless complexion for up to 16 hours. With ‘fruit therapy’, including apricot for radiance, melon for hydration, apple for antioxidants and ginger for energy.”

We say: Hmm, does this count as one of our five a day? Despite all the science claims, the only fruity grounds this foundation delivered on was looking orange. It felt sticky going on, and the finish was powdery and unsubtle. Think we’ll keep the fruit for eating, thanks.

Boots 17 Hide and Chic Anti-Fatigue foundation – £5.99 for 30ml – 2/10

Buy it online here

They say: “Energises and brightens your skin.”

We say: Sadly, the cheapest of the bunch was also the most disappointing. Far from brightening skin as promised, we found our pores looked clogged and cakey. There was even a worrying return of our old teenage nemesis, the tidemark. Best left on the 17 year olds.

Maybelline Dream Creamy foundation – £7.99 for 14g – 9/10

Buy it online here

They say: “Our new cream-whipped foundation for 100% baby smooth perfection. The combination of rich hydration in a lightweight formula blends seamlessly for 100% smooth perfection for a foundation that stays looking fresh all day.

We say: Maybelline dish up baby-fresh beauty for those of us who maybe aren’t born with it. Like couture for your face, this was cool and lightweight but its creamy solid-to-liquid texture gave reassuringly good coverage. In short? Lush.

Rimmel Match Perfection – £8.99 for 30ml – 7/10

Buy it online here

They say: “Adapts to your skin colour and texture, with blue sapphire pigments for true colour. Give a natural flawless finish.”

We say: Why do advertisers always think the way to sell to women is to tell us that there are jewels in our cosmetics? If we had a pound for every ‘pearl-infused’ conditioner and ‘diamond technology’ facial we’ve been offered, we’d have enough to buy some actual jewellery. But annoying faux-tech blurb aside, this was a pretty good performer. It was sheer but not too sheer, didn’t look powdery or orange on the skin, and gave lovely natural coverage.

Boots No.7 Essentially Natural Mineral foundation – £13.00 for 40ml – 8/10

Buy it online here

They say: “Lightweight hydration for a healthy-looking finish.”

We say: Cool, nicely textured and lightweight to wear, this actually did what it said on the tin (or tube, whatever). Not the sheerest of coverage, but skin looked flawless and felt moisturised and peachy.
