Get the look: Karen Gillan at the 2011 TV Choice Awards

By emilyborrett on September 14th, 2011

Karen Gillian looked sultry at the 2011 TV Choice Awards in a crystal-detailed nude dress with simple accessories and smoky eye makeup

When it comes to the British TV Choice Awards, fashion-wise it’s usually a bit of a cringey affair (there’s not much you can say about Gail from Corrie’s wrap dress from Per Una) but yesterday there was one actress there that shone through for us: Doctor Who star Karen Gillan, who plays Matt Smith’s sexy assistant in the show.

We’ve been a fan of Karen’s style for a while  because we like the way she mixes cool, tomboyish style with ultra-girly feminine twists, like yesterday where the clever girl teamed a crystal-encrusted peach shift dress with some simple, grungy jewellery, dark makeup and some mens-style patent loafers. She’s doing it Alexa Chung style, and we think she can pull it off.

We tried and tried in vain to find a replica of Karen’s dress on the high street, but we did find a very sweet nude-coloured tea dress from Topshop with the same girly, playful vibe as the actress’ and teamed it up with some uber-sparkly River Island jewellery to give the outfit the same sparkle. We’ve also found the perfect pair of patent women’s loafers too, on the Kurt Geiger site. Aren’t we good to you?

Check out the gallery above to get Karen Gillan’s TV Choice Awards look.

Ten fashionable gifts under $100

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on December 11th, 2008

10 under $100 1.jpg

We wrapped up $20 gifts under $200 and are on to the $50-$100 price range. The first thing we looked for? A fab coat for gifting to your favorite girl. We like this Gap plaid belted coat, on sale for $94.99, because the plaid can be a little holiday, a little preppy or a little indie depending on the giftee’s style. It’s a little something different for the girl who usually sticks to pea coats.

Old Navy has knocked off their own version of the enamel bangles everyone from Coach to Kenneth Jay Lane has offered lately, with pretty cute results!

The bangles range from $7.50 to $12.50, and could easily slip onto a wristful of pricier pieces without notice.

Or buy a few of these to get you in the mood for spring, and start you on your way to embracing the bright color trend.

Edgy necklaces by Dirty Librarian Chains

By Andrea Thatcher on October 31st, 2007

If dainty jewelry isn’t your thing and you have a hard time finding items that suit your edgier aesthetic, then Dirty Librarian Chains designer Susan Domelsmith knows exactly how you feel. Domelsmith began her jewelry line after she couldn’t find jewelry to fit her style. According to dirtylibrarianchains.com, the designer wanted to find jewelry “that possessed an edgy, understated and yet slightly askew elegance.”

She began by finding vintage chains that she put back together through knotting and tangling, to create pieces that could be both dressed up and dressed down. Because the pieces are all created from vintage chains, many are one of a kind or only made in small batches.
