Lifetime promises no changes made to ‘Project Runway’

By Kimberley Foster on May 29th, 2009

projectrunway_seasonsixpromo.jpg
Execs at Lifetime have responded to the concerns of many Project Runway fans by making few changes to the reality show from its original home at Bravo. After nine months of legal battles and other setbacks, the first images of season six have hit the web, showing the same set, logo, panel, etc. The only difference seems to be the location, it is shot in L.A. instead of New York.

”I was shocked. It was déjà vu. I was looking forward to different scenery, and everything was the same!” Heidi Klum said, after hoping that a new network would equal a show overhaul. I guess for some fans the familiarity will be comforting, but for others perhaps a little stale?

Project Runway cycle six is due to premiere on Lifetime August 20.

Bravo dumps Project Runway for copycat show ‘Fashion House’

By Kimberley Foster on October 28th, 2008

Project Runway Heidi.jpgHeidi Klum is facing pressure to find a new network home for Project Runway, after it was dumped by Bravo for a copycat designer reality show, called Fashion House.

TV execs at Bravo have all ready opened auditions for the replacement series, announcing casting call dates in four major cities, which began in New York on Sunday.

Series owner, Harvey Weinstein, sold the series to Lifetime for a reported $150 million last summer. But that deal was blocked by Bravo, which issued a court order to stop the sale.

The case is due back in court next month, however it seems that plans to pause production on a clone show until it is settled have been scrapped.

Weekend Update: what we missed including Project Runway scoop

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on September 29th, 2008

Weekend update collage.jpg

While sleeping in, going out and changing our wardrobes over from summer to fall, the fashion world kept churning.

Paris Fashion Week is in full swing, check out photo galleries of Nina Ricci, above right, top, and Gareth Pugh.
We love the Rodarte-heavy editorial spread in Italian Velvet Magazine posted on Foto Decadent, above left. Shot by James Macari, styled by Sabrina Vanotti and starring Eniko Mihalik, it kind of rivals that Steven Klein shoot in American Vogue for Rodarte mesh tights usage.
NBC rather quietly won its injunction against producers at The Weinstein Company for trying to take Project Runway to Lifetime. Fashionista breaks it down.

UPDATE: Nina Garcia exits Elle … or does she?

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on April 15th, 2008

Nina project runway copy.jpg

After yesterday’s announcement that Nina Garcia had left her position as fashion director at Elle, certain editors and industry people felt comfortable expressing their pleasure at the move. There was talk that Garcia hadn’t really been fashion director for years, it was just a title, and she was rarely in the office.

Better swallow those words, people. It looks like all the trouble with Project Runway moving from Bravo to Lifetime has caused problems for the magazine, which is signed on for one more year of participation with Bravo, and Garcia, a popular judge on the program.

Will Project Runway have fashion insiders tuning in to a network they never expected?

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on April 8th, 2008

Project Runway.jpg

The Bravo Network has long had a hold on fashion fans with projects that reach out to creative communities. Project Runway made the network the channel to watch if you were interested in the fashion industry.

Now it seems Lifetime, home to melodramatic made-for-tv movies for housewives, is surely hoping for the same cache as they make a play for the show.

Alice + Olivia dress seen on Bravo’s Real Housewives of New York

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on March 19th, 2008

Real Housewives tunic.jpg

Last night on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York, the so far less-entertaining or engaging spin-off of The Real Housewives of Orange County, Countess LuAnn de Lesseps donned this Alice + Olivia for the Seventeen magazine fashion week party and later attended the Alice + Olivia presentation.

Project Runway – the final three!

By Andrea Thatcher on February 27th, 2008

Rami.jpg

It’s always very interesting, and sometimes very telling, to see Tim Gunn visit the designers at their homes during their final design phase on Project Runway.

Christian’s apartment/studio is ridiculously small, and would so fit into the mythology of the young struggling designer who makes big. His designers were very big, very dramatic, very what you would expect. I don’t know about those feather pants. That’s no typo: feather, not leather.

New York Fashion Week: Victorya Hong’s show/Project Runway reunion

By Andrea Thatcher on February 1st, 2008

Victorya%20collage%202.jpg (Click image to enlarge. Left to right, top to bottom: Two looks from the runway show, Victorya Hong and Christian Siriano, from this season of Project Runway, Jack Mackenroth, also from this season, Victorya, and stylist David Evangelista, Christian and Elisa Jimenez, also from this season, a makeup artist backstage, and Jay McCarroll, legendary winner of season one.)

All the antics from Project Runway contestants past and present captured here make me wish I hadn’t had to hightail it back to Bryant Park for one more show at the close of Victorya Hong’s presentation. But I stayed focused then, and that’s what I’ll do here – on to the fashion!

After flipping through Victorya’s past designs on Project Runway, I realized two things. It’s incredible that she lasted as long as she did, and tonight’s runway show was leaps and bounds beyond anything she ever showed the PR judges. The construnction, and particularly the fit, were much more sophisticated on Victorya’s runway. Clearly she is not the sort of designer that is inspired by wacky challenges and incredible time constraints, she spreads her wings when she has time and a clear vision.

Padma may be painful to listen to on Top Chef, but she’s easy to look at in Dolce and Gabbana

By Andrea Thatcher on October 26th, 2007

padma.jpg

Let’s hope Padma Lakshmi, host of Bravo’s “Top Chef” didn’t have to read any lines to marr this beautiful image at the 4th Annual Black Ball concert for Keep a Child Alive presented by Conde Nast at the Hammerstein Ballroom last night. While she seems perfectly lovely in unscripted interviews, her hosting of the cooking competition can only be described as wooden. Moving on the the important stuff – her dress – Padma looked ravishing in this Dolce and Gabbana gown. The spaghetti strap dress featured a bustier look and a subtle yet sweeping train. But in a gorgeous cream, she’d better keep that frock out of the kitchen.

“Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style”: childish knits to professional picks

By Andrea Thatcher on September 28th, 2007

promote_costume_trap_200x155.jpgThis was my favorite episode of “Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style.” Tim and Veronica took a pediatrician with a very young attitude and made her all grown up! Stephanie from New York was very much into Care Bears and toys, and horizontal (gasp!) striped dresses that made her petite frame look akin to an 11-year-old (and they were just scary). She was looking for a new look for an ex-boyfriend’s wedding that was fast approaching. Tim helped her find dresses and skirts that elongated her legs so she appeared taller, had her pick new eyeglass frames that enhanced her face and chose dresses that made her look and feel sexy and confident. Tim advised three accessories one should always have. They are a great watch–nothing too gimmicky–I love Cartier; a decent handbag (I’ll take any bag, really, but I love the Coach totes), and classic black or brown pumps in leather (surprisingly, my latest pair is from Mandee’s, for $48, a happy bargain).

Guiding subjects into style with Tim Gunn

By Andrea Thatcher on September 14th, 2007

tim_veronica.jpg
Quite possibly my new favorite show on TV. Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style is on Bravo at 10 p.m. ET/PT every Thursday night. This isn’t a show that barges in, remakes you and leaves you in so-so fashions good for one season only. Fashionister Tim Gunn and sidekick former model Veronica Webb enter in ‘verbal agreements’ with his subjects to help them find what is a great style for them, because, as Tim says, style comes from within. The clients use clothes that are theirs, with a few alterations, and they do get a few new amazing clothes selected for the body shape and size. I love that Tim uses a computer to input the sizes of the subjects, then ‘dresses’ them in the clothes they had to keep, thus showing why a particular article of clothing is better (or worse!) than another style.
