And so the Fashion Week fun begins, girls and boys, as one of our favourite fashion months of the year starts off in New York today. I don’t know about you but I’ve been waiting for the NYFW mania to begin for a while now – and while I wait with baited breath to see what the USA’s finest will come up with this season, I’m taking a look at one of the Big Apple’s best designers: Jason Wu.

Wu, who has a large celebrity following including Michelle Obama and Diane Kruger, is one of my favourite Manhattan-based designers because he simply knows how to make a girl look good. His collections may not have the over-the-top couture drama of iconic designers such as Dior and Gaultier, but they are something far more important – truly stylish, wearable designs for real women. When I imagine who Wu, in his mind, designs for it is not a madcap Isabella Blow character but the average fashion-savvy woman on the street.

His last two collections or so are particularly special to me because to me, they show that Wu has really hit his stride now as a designer and found a trademark in elegant tailoring and cocktail dresses. My dream Jason Wu piece? The slate-grey men’s coat from his Autumn/Winter 2011 collection (pictured above in the gallery) with the black lace sleeve details. Such a modern take on masculine fashion.

Take a look at my favourite Jason Wu moments in the gallery above – and keep checking back on the site for NYFW updates.

New York Fashion Week: Marc Jacobs Fall 2009 Gallery

By Kimberley Foster on February 16th, 2009

Are we seeing a theme here? Everywhere I turn it’s a tribute to the Eighties for fall 2009… and I like it! Marc Jacobs wasn’t exempting himself from this nod to the neon era, but added a futuristic twist. There wasn’t a kilt in sight, just loads of bright hues, pleated trousers, sculptured cocktail dresses, colorful ponchos, printed leggings, thigh-high boots, all worn over black tights and topped with coiffed hair. Throw in some serious ’80s block shades, padded clutch bags, and long leather gloves and it was clear that Steven Sprouse for Louis Vuitton was still very much on Jacobs’s mind. Overall, it was daring, exciting but above all, fun. That said, I’m sure many will struggle to transfer these looks into wearable pieces, let alone afford to buy them. And sadly, at a time like this, that’s a worry.

New York Fashion Week Spring 2009: Shumaq

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on September 10th, 2008

Shumaq 1.jpg
Peruvian Shumaq designer Vanessa Barrantes (who is a total sweetheart BTW!) got her inspiration from a recent trip to Mexico in a small beach town. “I was feeling relaxed, and in turn the look became relaxed and sexy,” she told me.” They are fun and the dressing and shorts are fitted to the body, high-waisted with emphasis on the waist. I wanted clothes that felt good. ”

Using eco-friendly organic cotton as the basic fabric for her clothes, with denim and jersey, she has created a line that is flirty, playful, summery, sexy and feminine. The emphasis is on what feels good. And believe me, these clothes looked great! The dazzling palette of sherberty colors was sweet and fresh, hinting at happiness.

New York Fashion Week Spring 2009: Tracy Reese

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on September 10th, 2008

If you’re looking for flirty, feminine and fun, Tracy Reese never disappoints. Plus she puts on a good show.

When the strings of lights above the runway slowly lit up as the music began to pulse, everyone eagerly anticipated the first look.

The theme was soft, wearable dresses that translated to everyday wear; clothes that were effortlessly chic and sassy. Soft chiffon and slim ruffles combined with fitted belted waists added an ethereal look that just made the models merely float down the runway.

For more on Tracy Reese and who was front row (hint: an Ugly Betty star) keep reading.

Inside the tents at Bryant Park

By Andrea Thatcher on September 6th, 2008

Wizard of Oz shoe display.jpg

Remember when we told you that shoe designers like Manolo, Choo and Louboutin were asked to reinterpret Dorothy’s ruby slippers for the 70th anniversary of the “Wizard of Oz?” Well those shoes have been designed and produced and are on display inside the tents at Bryant Park.

Each year a different fashion display is placed around the Bryant Park fountain inside the entrance to the tents. It gives standing room guests something to look at while they wait to get in the show, when they’re done reading The Daily.

New York Fashion Week: Celebs at Herve Leger – Joss Stone, Padma Lakshmi, and Rose McGowan

By Andrea Thatcher on February 3rd, 2008

Herve%20Leger%20collage.jpg

While running around back of the tents headed backstage at Twinkle by Wenlan (more on that later) I spied a bunch of photogs snapping away at the backstage entrance, so of course I had to join them! It turns out celebs were just getting out of the much anticipated Herve Leger by Max Azria show. I spotted Joss Stone who was everywhere today, Padma Lakshmi, model and wooden (though beautiful) Top Chef host, and Rose McGowan who is rumored to be at many shows tomorrow.

I was most impressed with McGowan’s style, she had on a beautiful black trench coat and was actually reticent to take it off because she felt like it didn’t go with what was underneath. It was cute to see a celebrity have a self-concious moment like that.

Bryant Park Fashion Week tents will hold down the fort until 2010

By Andrea Thatcher on September 13th, 2007

bryantpark9.jpg
With Spring 2008 Fashion Week officially over, the rumors of the change of location for future seasons have been officially confirmed as untrue. Talks of a new location for Fashion Week filtered throughout organizer circles this year, but the contract confirms that the semiannual event will continue at the easy-access, Bryant Park location. IMG has signed a contract to continue pitching up the Fashion Week tents in New York’s Bryant Park until 2010. Though some residents of the city have expressed dissatisfaction and objections at the bi-annual event’s location–simply because it is not open to the public, but takes place in a public park to host exclusive events and extra-large crowds–the Mayor has decided to keep Fashion Week running in its traditional spot.
