Trend Alert: Summer hairpieces

By Shiny writer on July 23rd, 2010

Straight hair may be hot for the autumn but summer hair trends are still growing, at least until September. Wavy, boho curls and of course plaits are all huge styles for this season, however, one trend that’s huge this season is the headpiece.

Fascinators are key for smart events – think Ascot, weddings and posh dinners out – while headbands, a la Alice in Wonderland are great for the daytime. And of course there’s no getting away from bands that sit on the forehead, which give a huge nod to this season’s boho trend.

One great thing about the headpiece trend however, is that it can be worn almost anywhere, whether it’s a clip for a casual daytime look to something sparkly and posh for a night out. And celebrities are also taking advantage of this style with everyone from Pixie Lott to Sienna Miller donning a headband at some point over the past few months.

Here’s my top five favourites.

Matthew Williamson’s “Butterfly” range sweeps into Debenhams

By alanamcverry on April 20th, 2010

Butterfly.jpgWell known for his flowing bohemian influenced brightly coloured garments, but not so bohemian prices; Matthew Williamson cuts the hefty price tag and offers us high street shoppers something of his, for much less. His new range for Debenhams enters stores this week taking its name “Butterfly” from an inspirational painting he saw in Rajasthan in 1997, and this Indian influence emerges strongly in the assortment on offer.
The collection houses all one will need to embrace the summer months, from light coloured summer dresses, brightly flowing skirts to exotic looking bikinis. And if you’re willing to pay the maximum price of £120, you can get yourself a maxi dress emblazoned with Williamson’s signature style of vibrant prints. The majority of the items are labelled coral, embroidered, kaftan or tunic, so if the ‘I’ve travelled to far off lands’ look isn’t your thing, and your more comfortable in a pencil skirt and twin set, then this probably isn’t the collection for you. If you are, however, desperate to own a piece of Matthews then the charcoal grey satin dress at £50 is simple, stylish and there’s no pattern in sight.
It’s a particularly large collection, especially in the accessories department with many different items of jewellery, bags, purses, belts and other highly detailed pieces to choose from. Definitely worth a look even if you think at first it’s not your style, you could always buy something and sell it on ebayfor a profitable margin, should you decide it disagrees with you. Given it will surely sell out, the rules of supply and demand are ultimately working in your favour. Finally, if you like the butterfly motif there are also a number of butterflies adorning many of the items. It’s nice when things do what they say.

Butterfly Celestrina Clutch

By Andrea Thatcher on September 4th, 2007

butterfly%20bag.jpg
Live butterfly releases are a huge hit at weddings this season, a great alternative to boring white rice. For butterfly-loving brides, this Judith Leiber Butterfly Celestrina Clutch embellished in pink, lavender, lilac and clear Austrian crystals, is the perfect bag. The closure looks like the antennae on a real butterfly. It’s 100% lined in alligator, and includes a matching mirror and coin purse.
