Diane Kruger thought Calvin Klein bosses were “kidding” when they asked her to be the face of their Beauty fragrance.
The 35-year-old actress – who began her modelling career in Paris at the age of 15 – believed the public would adopt a, “Who does she think she is?” attitude if she fronted the brand.
She explained: “It’s very cool to be the face of a perfume, that’s a very flattering thing. When Calvin Klein asked me to be the face of a perfume called ‘Beauty’ I was like, ‘Who are you kidding?’ when they told me the name.
“I was thinking people are going to say, ‘Who does she think she is from Helen of Troy to ‘Beauty’?’ Then with all the work I’ve done for cosmetics companies too it becomes very global.”
The German-born beauty admitted she is pleased to now have more of a say in which campaigns she fronts, as she likes the idea of making products “accessible to all women over the world”.
Diane added to The Independent newspaper: “From my modelling days, I have relationships with all these people and it’s kind of a cool thing that I still do that as well. It’s better these days as I now have more of say in what I do and so I don’t sign with people that I don’t stand behind.
“I like the idea of accessibility, coming from a lower-middle-class background myself, I feel like beauty and products should be accessible to women all over the world.”
Calvin Klein signed Kate Moss for his iconic 1990s campaigns as a reaction to “distasteful” glamour.
The legendary designer was tired of the way women were trying to boost their assets and so chose the slender supermodel to front his collections as a statement against what had gone before her.
He said: “”The reason for Kate and this whole group of women I found that someone named ‘waifs’ was because before that, a lot of women were getting breast implants and doing things to their buttocks. It was getting out of control. I just found something so distasteful about all that.
“I wanted someone who was natural, always thin. I was looking for the complete opposite of that glamour type that came before Kate.”
Calvin, 69, is also known for his eponymous underwear line and while he wears his own garments, he is also willing to wear those created by rival designers in order to see how they compare with his own creations.
He told ‘Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis’: “My second wife Kelly worked with me in the design studio for a long period of time and she was greatly responsible for us doing underwear. I still wear it. And I wear other people’s underwear, too, because I want to check out the competition.”
The supermodel Lara Stone has confessed that modelling was never her ambition when she was growing up.
Lara said that as a child she never thought that modelling could be an “actual job”, planning instead as a little girl to become a stay-at-home mother. We bet if Lara’s younger self could see her now, fronting campaigns for Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss and Givenchy, she’d be staggered.
She said: “Modelling wasn’t on my radar at all. I remember looking at all those amazing photos of Kate Moss but at first I didn’t realise it was an actual job. I came from a standard family – my mum was a stay-at-home mum and my dad worked. So you think that’s what your life is going to be; meet a nice man, get married and have some babies. I know when I was younger I wanted to do tonnes of different jobs. I used to come up with these crazy jobs to try and provoke my parents but they said you can be anything you want. I was like, ‘I want to be a garbage man’ and they were like, ‘That’s OK, we still love you!’”
We’re so glad Lara realised her ambition – she’s one of our favourite models.
Maxis are still a big deal this Autumn/Winter - if you're not a fan of its hippy/boho connotations then opt for this elegant silk maxi.
There are two main fashion camps that you’ll feel the pressure to fall into come this Autumn/Winter: will you take your inspiration from the likes of Givenchy and Meadham Kirchoff and turn yourself into a peculiar, cat-lady rainbow of oddities, or will you keep things sleek, modern and minimal in muted palettes and clean shapes? I know that I’ll be straying into definite cat-lady territory this year, but minimalism isn’t to be sniffed at – sometimes keeping things simple can have a dramatic effect, as the likes of Lara Stone and Diane Kruger are always proving.
Luckily, you don’t need a hot-shot actress’ salary to get in on the action as this is on trend that the high street is wholeheartedly embracing. Asos in particular is an excellent source for simple, clean and modern designs – we were especially wowed by a Poltock Walsh for Asos silk maxi dress in soft grey silk, which could look equally amazing worn with heels and jewellery at night or a slouchy blazer during the day.
However, accessory-lovers beware. This is a trend that requires careful styling – too little could look frumpy, too much will definitely look ridiculous. Do not cancel out your outfit’s clean simplicity by emptying your entire jewellery box over yourself. Instead, seek out pieces that will work on their own to compliment your look – Topshop has some brilliant cuff bracelets and futuristic-style earrings that could set off a minimalistic outfit wonderfully.
Have a look through the gallery above for our favourite pieces rocking the trend on the high street.
Say what you will about supermodels and the debatable exclusivity of the inner circle of fashion, but Lara Stone is a model that’s difficult to dislike. With her disarmingly wholesome and beautiful, gap-toothed smile, her curves, which set her apart from every other ten-a-penny size zero clothes horse, and her own admission that she is “afraid of other females”, she’s one of the only famous models that we could imagine ourselves being best friends with. (If she’d let us, because we’re female). We want to hang out with her on the weekends with her comedian hubby David Walliams, drinking tea and watching Take Me Out on Sky Plus, and yes – raiding her wardrobe.
What we like about Lara’s personal style is how effortless and simple it seems. She never puts on too much eye glitter or wears a hideous assortment of garments that even Gok Wan would turn up his nose at – her outfits are always low-key and classic. It’s no wonder that she’s the face of Calvin Klein, one of the most classic minimal fashion houses practising today. Whether she’s wearing a spectacular party dress or a LBD, she always manages to look immaculate without appearing too studied. Want to see for yourself? Check out the gallery above for our favourite Lara looks.
If you’ve seen Avatar then you’ll remember its sexy female leading actress, Zoe Saldana, being all blue and leaping about on screen. Well, now she’s set to become the face of Calvin Klein’s new underwear campaign. I personally think she looks way better without the body paint and dodgy dreadlocks.
Said Zoe Saldana, on her revealing photoshoot for CK: “Calvin Klein has always put forth such beautifully executed campaigns and it’s very exciting for me to be associated with such an iconic, globally recognised brand.” She’ll be joining the legion of other beautiful famous faces that have modelled over the years; Calvin Klein’s ad campaigns not only kick-started the career of actor Mark Wahlberg in the 1990s, but were also responsible for supermodel Kate Moss’ climb to international fame. Calvin Klein ads have most recently featured such famous faces as the star of Twilight, Kellan Lutz, Eva Mendes and tennis star Fernando Verdasco. Congratulations, Zoe!
The rumour mill is in full swing this morning. First we heard whispers of a Lady Gaga sunglasses range and now the grapevine is buzzing with news that Lara Stone is the new face of Calvin Klein.
According to rumours the model du jour and bride-to-be is being signed up to be the face of the designer’s main collection as well as the Calvin Klein Jeans line and the cosmetics part of the brand too.
She would be stealing the Calvin Klein campaign crown from Jac Jablonski, who has fronted the collection for a couple of seasons and Eva Mendes who was the saucy face of the jeans brand this season. We’ll say it for the second time today: Watch this space.
Politician’s wives are becoming nearly as famous as their other halves across the fashion world. The dowdy outfits donned by these supportive female figures have been binned and replaced by must-have wardrobe labels such as Erdem (a favourite of Sarah Brown) Calvin Klein (as worn by Michelle Obama) and even Marks and Spencer (who can forget Samantha Cameron’s polka dot dress).
And as they become more and more popular, the media world is alight with news of Samantha Cameron’s pregnancy, the fashion spotlight on these women becomes bigger.
Rarely a day goes by without some comment about Michelle Obama’s latest outfit hitting the news wires and Sarah Brown has thrown herself into the fashion world, becoming an iconic figure of many high profile events. She jointly opened London Fashion Week this year (we were there to see it and we have to admit her speech was inspiring) appeared at the Elle Style awards and also held a reception for the Cosmopolitan Women Of The Year at Downing Street.
However, as in any industry there’s always the quiet dark horse, and it’s no different here with Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg‘s wife Miriam Gonzalez staying out of the fashion spotlight.
However, although she may not be fashion forward Mrs Clegg knows exactly how to dress. She’s appeared alongside the MP on various occasions in stylish frocks, and even donned the braces look for one event, which we think is slightly daring but works incredibly well.
With four stylish women who all do a great job of promoting fashion and keeping in with political values we’re a little bit torn as to who to award the fashion crown to.
So once again we’ve decided to leave it to you. View the gallery below and then vote in the ballot box to tell us who you think is the most stylish. And if there’s anything else you want to say, tell us by leaving your comments in the box below.
We’ve covered many politician’s wife’s fashion here at ShinyStyle and although we’ve been taken by their styles (who could forget Samantha Cameron’s polka dot M&S dress) one lady that always comes up trumps is Michelle Obama.
The wife of the American president has really come into her own in the fashion stakes stepping out in her trademark high waisted belt and other trends from leopard print to smart tweed.
So we thought it was about time we put together a gallery of her style. Use her fashion sense for your own inspiration, and you may just bag yourself a man in power too.
It didn’t take long (just enough time to achieve maximum exposure, I’m presuming) for Calvin Klein to pull it’s controversial jeans billboard in Manhattan. The company has instead replaced the “threesome” ad with a much less provocative shot of Doutzen Kroes in a red bikini. I’m sure this will come as a sight for sore eyes to many of the locals, namely of the male variety.
Calvin Klein is in hot water yet again after a provocative billboard for its womenswear and menswear jeans line was unveiled in New York this week. The racy ad which depicts a young female semi-naked model lying across one man and kissing another has caused uproar amongst appalled Manhattanites. However CK designers are at a loss to see the problem.
“It’s my favorite campaign ever!” said CK menswear designer, Italo Zucchelli. “I hope they’re going to be, ‘Ooooh, what is that?’ And then they buy our jeans. In the best tradition of Calvin Klein.”
It’s beginning to be par for the course – Calvin Klein creates a commercial, it’s too hot for TV and is banned and gets more attention and buzz than it ever would have on the airwaves.
This time the commercial, above, and admittedly a little NSFW, was even banned from late night cable. But it looks like a toned down version will make it to your TV.
Celebrating 40 years in the business was Calvin Klein on Sunday night at New York Fashion Week. The label attracted a bevy of Hollywood-ites including previous and current CK faces such as Eva Mendes. The red carpet bash, held at a disused railway line, consisted of everything recyclable including the plants and flowers. To see what all the stars wore check out our gallery below.
