Why bare legs are a national style crime

By Lauren Bravo on March 23rd, 2010

wenn2711201.jpgLauren Bravo writes:

Fact for the day: did you know that in France, a girl wearing a winter coat with a miniskirt and bare legs is said to be dressing “a l’anglaise”? It’s true, I heard it somewhere.

Now, I’m not suggesting we should all be cowering with collective national shame – after all, our oh-so-chic Gaelic cousins have never quite understood British style endeavours. Across the channel, fashion rules prevail with the force of William the Conqueror. No black with brown or navy, no cleavage, no garish makeup, no dyed hair, non non non! We, meanwhile, are categorised by our somewhat ‘laissez-faire’ attitude toward dressing (I believe in translation that means “falling headfirst into a wardrobe and wearing whatever comes out stuck to you”), complete with daring ‘dos, colour clashing and yes, maybe, a little flesh-flashing when the mood takes us.

But I can’t help feeling that on this occasion, maybe we should pay heed to les femmes françaises. Because if they think that the English are a nation of under-clothed Cinderellas, wandering numbly through the snow with our legs out, I’m afraid I’m inclined to agree with them. Zeut alors.

Unseasonal bare legs are becoming something of an epidemic, sweeping the country like a monster from a ’50s B-movie. It’s practically sport, on an average night out, to keep a tally of every girl you see sporting the stilettos-and-blue-veined-stubble look, complete with massive coat poached off a man under the guise of helpless femininity (Why these blokes never just say “You should have dressed for January then, you silly bint” will remain an eternal mystery). Bonus points if it is raining, or she is walking barefoot and carrying her shoes.

Why, then? Aside from a lyrca allergy or maybe malaria, I can’t find a single reason for bare legs with a mini before June. Our shops are well-stocked with tights of every colour and print imaginable, leggings are still riding first-class on the trend train, and this season we have the additional pleasure of socks to toy with – yet so many women still plump for the chicken skin and hypothermia.

Obviously British Weather is partly to blame. In our flighty climate, particularly during these transitional months, it’s hard to know what to wear. Put on the big coat and the sun will come out, put on the little jacket and it will start snowing as soon as you get to the bus stop. And this is coupled with our traditional hardiness, and proud optimism where the onset of summer is concerned. It’s the same reason we go out and buy a Calippo as soon as we hear a bumblebee, and spend our bank holidays sitting on pebble beaches under a blanket saying “Well, isn’t this nice?”

Then there’s the celebrity factor. Celebs do bare legs all the time, and yes, most of the time they look ruddy gorgeous. But as far as I can deduce, being famous means you become suddenly impervious to weather. You don’t feel cold, or wind, or rain, and so you can stay committed to the cause of leg-baring on red carpets throughout the winter months. As an antidote to this deception, I suggest you look in the mirror before a night out and ask yourself: Am I a celebrity? Am I going to the Brits? Or am I in fact a normal girl, going to a Wetherspoons in Chorley?

On that note, ladies, think of all the great reasons there are to keep your legs covered until summer. For starters, the obvious: you won’t need to shave! You’ll save so much time! Take up crochet or something (in fact, crochet yourself some long johns, there’s a plan). Then the almost-as-obvious: you will be WARMER. You can stop borrowing coats from men, you won’t have to do that frostbitten hobble to the kebab shop, and hell, you might not even NEED the kebab because you won’t be losing as much of your body heat through your thighs.

There are also style kudos to be earned – much as the WAG contingent of our glossies has been trying to persuade us otherwise, true fashionistas know the truth: miniskirts were just made to be worn with tights. Think about it; it’s the reason they were both invented in the ’60s. With tights you can go even shorter, cover your modesty, save yourselves from blisters, make a handy tea strainer if needed, and avoid people asking if you’ve ever witnessed an English November before.

Yes, I am prepared to add this matter to the list of Things the French Get Right, under steak, Chanel, cheese and Thierry Henry. Come summer, you can frolic around as bare legged as you like. But for now, I will say zis only once: leave the goosebumps on the frogs’ legs, and keep yours under wraps.

Alicia Keys wears Cavalli on the cover of her new album

By lotte on December 2nd, 2009

Alicia Keys in Cavalli.jpg Roberto Cavalli’s colourful and flamboyant designs are not for everyone, but Alicia Keys, one of his most loyal celebrity fans, has chosen a Cavalli dress to wear on the cover of her new album ‘The Element of Freedom’ (out in two weeks).

We’d love to get our hands on a Cavalli dress, but the closest we’ve come to owning one was through the H&M collaboration he did two years ago. For now it’s enough just to lust over the likes of fringed dresses and diamante-encrusted platform sandals from his last collection.

Other celeb fans include Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, who love him for his ultra-sexy dresses. Surprisingly, he’s toned down this trademark glamour in his collections in recent years – his spring/summer 2010 catwalk show was even labelled ‘conceptual’ by one fashion writer, and featured lots of decidedly unsexy layering. We think Alicia’s choice of a halter gown with attention-grabbing feathered collar is classic Cavalli. You can get a taste of the feather trend in lots of high street shops right now – try Asos and Topshop for a feathered skirt or hair accessory.

Leopard print makes its mark at the Twilight: Full Moon premiere

By lotte on November 20th, 2009

THE CINEMA SOCIETY and D&G host screening of THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON Pixie Geldof and Alexa Chung turned up to the Twlilight: New Moon New York premiere last night wearing leopard print accents. Animal prints are always relevant in fashion in one form or another, but there’s something particularly cool right now about finishing off denim and black with a shoe, bag or jacket in leopard print.

Alexa used her bag to tone down a full-skirted, metallic navy blue prom dress and black platform heels. Of course, Pixie’s trademark 90s grunge style didn’t need toning down. She wore her leopard print fake-fur gilet with a tight black dress and chunky Doc Marten-style boots, topping the look off with a beanie hat.

Our advice is to follow these two it girls’ leads and stick to one leopard print item per all-black outfit to really make a statement.

Get the look: Alexandra Burke’s Rolling Stones t-shirt

By lotte on November 20th, 2009

Alexandra Burke.jpg Alexandra Burke was photographed at the airport wearing this new interpretation of a classic logo t-shirt. It’s designed by Elegantly Waisted, who add embellishments to rock t-shirts with ribbon, buttons, appliques and lace, and costs £45. We’ve checked out the rest of the range – they’ve got tees and dresses featuring Guns n’ Roses and Ramones logos.

Go to www.truffleshuffle.co.uk if you want to buy it. But remember the band t-shirt rule: if you haven’t heard of them, you’re not allowed to wear their t-shirt.

X Factor: Get Cheryl’s look for less

By lotte on November 17th, 2009

cherylcole-2009nov14.jpg We think Cheryl Cole (or her stylist) must have been looking at our gallery of Strictly-inspired dresses, because on Saturday’s X Factor live show she was wearing a sequined dress just like some of the ones we featured.

Of course, Cheryl’s was Alexander Wang, not Dorothy Perkins, but at least we can get a similar look at a price that suits our budget. Cheryl’s navy blue sequined dress is really wearable, and she looked great in it on Saturday, especially since it was a bit less experimental than some of her other outfits so far. Alexander Wang has had a really great year in 2009, so expect to see a lot more of his designs on celebrities in 2010…

Find a similar purple sequined number (minus the ruching) at www.dorothyperkins.com.

Lady Gaga to perform on Gossip Girl

By lotte on November 16th, 2009

Check out Lady Gaga wearing a 30-foot long dress during her appearance in an upcoming episode of Gossip Girl. Unfortunately, except for the crazy dress and a bit of dry ice, there’s nothing else particularly unusual about the performance, despite Gaga’s usual antics (see-through lace bodysuit, anyone?).

She’s performing her latest single Bad Romance at a gig organised by Blair Waldorf. Blair clearly knows how to get on the good side of her fellow students at New York University – if Lady Gaga had played at my university union it probably would have caused a small riot.

The episode screens tonight in the US but we’ll have to wait for a few weeks to see it here.

Gallery: Get Zooey Deschanel’s retro red carpet look on a budget

By lotte on November 6th, 2009
2009 Film Independent Spirit Awards - Arrivals

We love Zooey Deschanel’s kooky dress sense at ShinyStyle, and although she’s not exactly a household name yet, she probably will be soon. Her last film 500 Days of Summer put her alongside indie film darling Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and while she earns even more cool points for being in a band, it’s her personal style that really sets her apart from most other actresses. Her trademark bows, retro dresses and fringe (think Katy Perry, only a lot better) make it hard to believe she’s nearly 30 – and proves there’s no need to stop dressing in a cute way just because you’re out of your teens.

We’re guessing she’s a fan of Luella, Karen Walker and Erin Fetherston, but you can get a similar look for much less – just remember to look in vintage stores too for retro accessories that Zooey would love.

Sienna Miller sports a Katherine Kwei handbag while taking a stroll in NYC

By Andrea Petrou on November 3rd, 2009

Sienna Miller has long been one of our favourite style icons.

She bought the boho look to the mainstream market and done so well as a fashion icon that she also has her own fashion label, Twenty8Twelve, which she created with her sister.

And we’ll sure you’ll agree that once again the boho beauty looks stunning as she strolled the streets of NYC’s West Village last Friday.

We love her pup Bess, but what’s really caught our eye is her gorgeous handbag.

We did a little bit of handbag investigation work and found out that this little gem is the creation of designer Katherine Kwei.

You can get your hands on this Joyce Carry-All, calf and lambskin bag for $625. Put at the top of your Christmas list now.

Top ten alternatives to Henry Holland tights

By Andrea Petrou on August 18th, 2009

Now I know I should stay away from tights and brightly coloured ones at that, after my past fashion faux pas, which I admitted to you last week.

However, this week, we couldn’t resist telling you about Pixie Geldof’s new fashion look, bought on by flamboyan designer Henry Holland.

The up and coming fashion fellow has designed a collection of hosiery for Pretty Polly, which launched this week at Selfridges. And celebs, including Pixi Geldof and Agyness deyn are already covering their pins in his designs made from sheer and opaque fabrics.

These include his trademark purple, with a cream rhinestone-encrusted band around the thigh and mid calf, and a style he’s christened the “moc stock” which looks like a pair of stockings but is in fact a far more practical pair of tights.

The tights are a leg hugging £10 per pair. They are available from Selfridges now and nationwide from September.

However, for those that can’t get to the store or can’t wait that long we’ve put together a range of other alternatives, after all we can’t deny any longer that the tights season will be soon upon us, and dusting out last season’s ones might bring a few shocks.
