There’s nothing mysterious about style, and it’s for everyone

By Daisy Buchanan on April 19th, 2013

Writer and elegant lady Janina Matthewson figures out that style isn’t about imitation – it’s about dancing.

767779_84202384

You are probably not a style icon. I might be wrong about that, after all I can’t see you, but you probably aren’t. There are, in fact, precious few around; although almost every celebrity will be dubbed that at some point in their career, few manage to keep the label indefinitely. Style Icon status can’t really be ascribed until years down the line, long after a person’s ceased to care much about style at all. When someone says, long after you’re gone, “that dress is very so-and-so,” then, I think, then you truly deserve the name.

For most of us, of course, being a Style Icon is unimportant. We’ve other concerns, like what to have for lunch dessert and whether anyone can see last night’s red wine stains on our lips. But we definitely want to feel stylish. We want to feel that undefinable sense of looking good; looking different somehow, in an excellent way; looking like some fascinating being. We want people to fall in love with us at first sight, even if we believe that to be a myth. We want to be admired.

But how do you become an Audrey or a Marilyn, even on a domestic level? Because it’s not really about dressing fashionably. It’s not about dressing well. It’s about dressing as yourself. As the best yourself. It’s about stocking your life in such a way that every morning, with little thought, you can throw something on that’ll have you walking down the street confident in the knowledge that the world can see a little bit of who you are, and that they’ll like it.

There is, of course, an entire industry dedicated to trying to teach you how to be stylish. There are magazines and newspapers and websites. There are catwalks and red carpets. There are personal shoppers waiting for you at your nearest high street fashion store. But at the end of the day, it’s something a person has to figure out for him or herself.

One of the best pieces of shopping advice I’ve ever come across came courtesy of Helen Fielding in her Bridget Jones follow up, Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination. The advice was this: “Only buy clothes that make you feel like doing a small dance.” Now, you may or may not be the dancing kind, you may not even be the feeling like dancing kind, but it’s an easily translatable feeling. We’ve all felt it about something or other. The trick is, and it takes effort, to train yourself to expect it as a matter of course, and to hold out until it comes.

So down with buying jeans that are little more than “perfectly fine.” Down with dresses “that’ll do.” Down with “all right shoes,” and “passable tops,” and, “suitable skirts.” We will be dancing in our changing rooms or we’ll be remaining naked.

Spotted: #LFW Day 1 celebrities, Peaches Geldof, Paloma Faith, Bonnie Wright

By Elisabeth Edvardsen on September 17th, 2011

London Fashion Week SS12 is in town which means the celebrities are out and about looking for style inspiration or simply wanting to be looked at.

Day 1 of London Fashion Week saw a skinny Peaches Geldof head to The Royal Opera House and the Sass & Bide show along with a colourful Paloma Faith (not sure if she’s taking the bird trend we’ve been seeing lately a tad too far) and singer Dionne Bromfield, the niece of Amy Winehouse. Diana Vickers and actress Bonnie Wright also graced the front row.

Peaches, who wore an all black ensemble then dashed off to the BFC Catwalk Show Space at Somerset House for the Fielder and Fielder show.

There’s nothing we love better than trawling through paparazzi pictures here at Shiny Style, and today was no exception – we had a good hard look to see which mahoosive stars were out partying and looking glam across the pond yesterday.

Some of New York’s finest were out in full force yesterday for a  ”Green Auction” benefit at Christie’s in NYC – actress and style icon Diane Kruger tripped in on the arm of fashion designer Jason Wu in a gloriously old-fashioned little black dress with a white silk petticoat, demure high heels and a fishtail plait, while editor-at-large of American Vogue, Anna Wintour, was her normal scary fashion self in a leather and floral midi-dress which showed off her tiny frame.

Nicki Minaj turned up looking crazy and amazing as normal in a microscopically tiny leather playsuit with a green beehive – we love. Also there was The City star Olivia Palermo, who looked impeccable in a lace-effect blouse and a digital-printed pleated skirt – if you want to know how to combine prints without making it look like a crazy mess, she’s the girl to look to.

At a launch event in Nevada, Pamela Anderson was out with her mandem in a floor-length white number and absolutely enormous hair.

Meanwhile our favourite stars of the silver screen were spotted enjoying some down-time in their neighbourhoods – prodigal actress Emma Roberts was seen out and about in Los Angeles looking cute and on-trend in a camel fedora hat and skinny jeans, teamed with demure little ballet flats. We wish we looked this good on our day off. Back in the Big Apple, actress Naomi Watts was spotted nonchalantly sporting classic Ray-Ban sunglasses and a khaki parka while she was out about about.

To see who we spotted in the US yesterday, check out the gallery above.

Kate Winslet takes lysine to combat spots

By Andrea Petrou on March 9th, 2011

Kate Winslet takes lysine to combat spots.

The 35-year-old actress confesses she deals with unsightly outbreaks on her face by taking the essential amino-acid, but has to maintain it otherwise the pimples return.

She said: “I get breakouts on my chin – it’s a f**ker. Lysine helps massively with the skin. I definitely advise it. But you have to take a lot of it.”

She also has to make sure to exercise, doing Pilates to help keep her trim figure in shape.

Kate told Britain’s Vogue magazine: “Well, I’m 35 now. I’ve got to keep it together. I mean f**k, it really does start to happen doesn’t it? I’ve been doing a bit of Pilates and some running. A little bit of this and that.

“A part of, I suppose, my way out of everything, has been really taking care of myself.”

The British beauty also confesses she is not a person who enjoys going out shopping, claiming she “hates” the idea.

She said: “I don’t go shopping. I’m not one of those people who can do a day’s shopping. I’ve never been like that. Never, ever, I can’t. I really hate it.”

ShinyStyle’s top 10 fashion moments of 2010

By Andrea Petrou on December 16th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

As the end of the year draws to a close and we start looking forward to the beginning of 2011, we’ve decided to do a little reminiscing over the past year. Who’s designed the best collections, who’s worn what, who’s launched this and whose names we should know. Below is the top 10 countdown of our favourite all-time fashion moments over 2010, the ones that we think have been the most important. Check it out below.

10. Lady Gaga's infamous meat dress

Picture 1 of 10
Picture 1 of 10

Whether you loved it or hated it, the meat outfit that Gaga wore to the VMAs this year certainly got people talking. Her choice of dress material raised severe criticism from animal rights groups such as PETA - her claim that the message of the outfit was that she was "not a piece of meat" was met with some cynicism. Was she being avant-garde, or just extreme for the sake of extreme?

Gallery: Angelina Jolie’s “Salt” outfits

By Shiny writer on July 26th, 2010

Angelina Jolie hasn’t been in the limelight for a longtime but over the past month this has changed.

The starlet has been out and about promoting her new film “Salt” wowing us in her outfits as well as showing the world that despite rumours, her and Brad are still very much an item. At the LA Premier of the film Angie opted for a sparkly short black strapless number.

Posing alongside Mr Pitt, the actress showed off her new figure, which has filled out slightly since worrying pictures of her skinny frame appeared in the media a few months back.

She carried on her extraordinary fashion sense at the Comic Con event in a more casual black skirt, which she teamed up with an on-trend leather jacket.

She then opted for a similar black skirt with a satin pink boatneck top for a press call at the Russian premier of the film before changing into a red ballgown frock to walk the red carpet. We’re sure Brad was very impressed Ange.

We get the low down on celeb fashion and AW2010 trends from Rachel Zoe

By Andrea Petrou on May 7th, 2010

Rachel and shoes.jpg

Rachel Zoe is best known as stylist to the stars and has successfully dressed a range of A-listers including Nicole Ritchie.

So we were hardly surprised when she hit television screens offering advice and an insight into her busy styling life. And it seems you were as interested as we were as Rachel, who has had her fair share of contraversy, as the Rachel Zoe Project comes back for another series, which will be broadcast on Really from 10th-19th May at 8pm (Sky 248, Virgin TV 267).

To celebrate this, we decided to get a little of a low down from Ms Zoe about hot trends and celebrity style.

What’s been your favourite outfit you’ve chosen for a celebrity recently?
I have a handful, it’s really difficult to chose one. I would have to say Anne Hathaway at the Venice Film Festival in 2008, and I would say Annie at the Oscars in 2009.

In Venice she wore an Atelier Versace – it was like a pale, mint-green chiffon. It was heaven. She looked like an old Hollywood movie star. Amazing. At the Oscars it was Armani. Then there was Cameron Diaz at the Golden Globes last year, wearing Chanel couture. But I shouldn’t be telling you all this, because I don’t want to spoil it! I have a lot of favourites, but it’s also what comes together with the actress – with the jewellery, the make-up, the hair. A look can be completely destroyed by the wrong hair and make-up.

What are the must-have items for spring/summer and autumn/winter 2010/2011?

I think for spring/summer it’s a lot about amazing shoes this season. There are a lot of Lucite platforms, incredible wedges and things like that around at the moment. All the designers did them, which was so much fun. Even open-toed ankle boots; so much fun. I think lots of sundresses, bold floral prints and paisley prints and things like that. I’m really loving over-sized scarves in lightweight fabric for spring. For the autumn, it’s all about layering. Luxurious layering. Over-sized coats, huge, chunky sweaters, the trench coat, tonnes of shearlings and bomber jackets, thigh-high boots.

Top Five celeb styles:

Cameron Diaz- She’s the perfect mix of California cool and tomboy chic. She has an effortless style that is unique to her. She never does the expected and always adds a pop of color to add life to any look, even if it’s just jeans and a tee. Wear the perfect pair of jeans with a bright, unexpected shoe to channel Cameron.

Kate Hudson- Epitomises bohemian glamour and has a relaxed everyday style. She loves fashion, and she rocks everything with a huge smile. Wear lots of layers and an oversized scarf.

Demi Moore- Always chic, but with an edge. She tends to favor greys and black. She lets her cascading dark hair juxtapose a very sophisticated look. Always in perfectly tailored looks that don’t overwhelm her. Wear a classic black dress, hair loose and a great coat.

Anne Hathaway- She has such great “actress off duty” style. Tends to rock the androgynous look. Has a downtown flavor by day and does the red carpet with grace and style. Pair saddle shoes with an oxford shirt and a vest.

Eva Mendes- A young Sophia Loren who exudes sensuality without trying. Loves tailored cocktail dresses. Do Eva’s street style with a hat, great coat and a pair of jeans.

Joss Stone to design forotwear range for Nine West

By Andrea Petrou on April 27th, 2010

Joss Stone at Coachella Festival 2009.jpg

It doesn’t seem as though the celebrity designing trend is going to end anytime soon. Everywhere we turn new actresses, models and singers are announcing collaborations with designers and today it’s the turn of Joss Stone.

The songstress who prefers to go barefoot when she performs in concerts has announced that she will be designing a range of footwear for Nine West, which the company claims will be based on the “many facets of her personality” and her array of floral tattoos

However, we’re a little bit disappointed with this Brit singer who will be designing for the US arm, which has a moto of “rugged American individualism.”

Despite that, there is a silver cloud here. The A/W collection will be raising funds for the charity Soles4Souls.

Gallery: Best dressed celebrities at the Empire Film Awards 2010

By Andrea Petrou on March 29th, 2010

Although we’ve already awarded Sarah Harding the style crown for her outfit at the Empire film awards 2010, we didn’t think it would be fairto completely exclude the other celebrities that made an effort last night.

And there were quite a few.

Jane Goldman literally gave the red carpet a run for its money turning up with bright red hair, while Michelle Ryan went for a safe puffball dress. Olivia Grant however went completely the other way in a daring frock with a feathered skirt and satin bodice, a style we’ve spotted in stores such as Lipsy and Oasis.

We’ve put together a gallery of all the best dressed stars of the night.

Sarah Harding steals the fashion limelight at the 2010 Empire Film Awards

By Andrea Petrou on March 29th, 2010

Sarah Harding Empire film awards.jpg
It was another star studded event last night as Brit celebs donned their glad rags and hit the red carpet for the Empire Film 2010 awards.

And although many stars including Jamie Winstone and Michelle Ryan, looked fantastic (we’ll be giving you a best dressed gallery shortly) it was Sarah Harding that really stole the fashion limelight.

The Girls Aloud singer and party girl rocked up to the event held at the London Grovsenor Hotel in a can’t go wrong little black dress with rouching detail and pink satin stripes. She completed the look with matching pink sky scraper peep toe heels.

Do you agree that Sarah looked good? Vote and leave your comments below to let us know.

By Andrea Petrou on March 9th, 2010

While Elton and his celebrity clan were living it up at his after party event, other celebrities partied the night away at the Vanity Fair event.

Amanda Seyfried, who thankfully changed out of her bridal red carpet dress, Katy Perry, Cameron Diaz, Amy Adams (who was notedly absent at the actual Oscars ceremony) all made an appearance.

And some, including Victoria Beckham (who wore the same dress) also mixed and matched their evenings attending both.

We’ve put together a gallery of the best dressed.
