To celebrate all things British this year, with the Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympics putting the isles firmly on the map – and to support The Evening Standard Dispossessed Fund – Matches has collaborated with some of Britain’s most notable London-based designers to create a collection of exclusive t-shirts.
Erdem, Holly Fulton, the designer and illustrator behind cult magazine ‘Herself’, Richard Nicoll, Roksanda Illincic, Jonathan Saunders, JW Anderson and Mary Katrantzou have all designed unique t-shirts for the charity project, with the latter three offering menswear tees too.
Ruth Chapman, CEO of Matches Fashion, says, “As a London based retailer with a wide range of International clients, we wanted to celebrate London in 2012 and asked some of our most creative and innovative British designers to partner with us on this project, which also gives something back to our city. I’m very proud of this beautiful collection of limited edition t-shirts and that with the proceeds we can support The Dispossessed Fund to fight poverty in London”.
The t-shirts are sold exclusively at Matches stores and online for £60.

Kate Middleton has had a week of being in the fashion spotlight.
The Duchess of Cambridge went on a range of Royal visits including meeting the cast of the theatre version of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. For this event she opted for a simple royal blue dress and coat.
However, the style changed over the weekend when Kate opted for a casual, albeit budget busting, look of £300 Le Chameau wellies, Zara jeans and jumper, a Burberry shirt and waterproof waistcoat for a countryside visit.
She later made up on her spend wearing a cream sculptured, double breasted coat by Alexander McQueen, which she was first spotted in at last year’s Trooping the Colour procession.
See her five days of fashion in the gallery below.

Most women dream of owning a designer handbag, but seeing as most of them cost the equivalent of a month’s rent it usually stays just a dream. However, what if I said buying said bag also means that you’d be doing something for a charitable cause…
British fashion model Erin O’Connor is leading the celebrity support of Save the Children’s Christmas ‘Bag to Save a Life’ appeal when it launches tomorrow, Friday 25th November 2011. Erin is joined by other well-known names such as Sienna Miller, Tilda Swinton, Florence Welch, Gemma Arterton, Georgia May Jagger, Annie Lennox and the UK’s Prime Minister’s wife and Save the Children Ambassador, Samantha Cameron to raise funds for the charity’s lifesaving work in the poorest countries.
If you fancy snapping up a bag by the likes of Christian Louboutin, Mulberry, Jimmy Choo, Miu Miu, Prada and many more – donated or designed by the lovely celeb ladies previously mentioned – make sure you join in on the online auction from tomorrow on www.savethechildren.org.uk/bagtosave.
Samantha Cameron has donated her Jimmy Choo bag, Sienna Miller a Miu Miu, Tilda Swinton has donated a bag from Chanel AND a bag from Victor & Rolf, while Gemma Arterton has donated a leather patent Prada bag.
If you want to take part in the auction, the starting price will be at around a quarter of the bags’ recommended retail price. You can also donate any unwanted bags you might have laying around at any of the Save the Children stores around the UK to be included into the auction.
The online auction will be live from Friday 25th November to Sunday 4th December 2011.

Labels such as John Galliano and Valentino have donated covetable items to help protect the world’s rainforests.
The fashion houses have joined forces with Sting and Trudie Styler’s charity, Rainforest UK, and contributed goods to annual charity auction The 12 Days of Christmas.
A spokesperson from John Galliano told vogue.co.uk: “The Rainforest Foundation UK is globally respected for their innovative approaches in the protection of the rainforests and the rights of forest communities who call those forests home. We at the House of Galliano felt compelled and inspired by their ground-breaking work in remote forest areas, and their desire to care for some of the most beautiful places and peoples in the world. We are proud to be part of the 12 Days of Christmas auction, and are happy that chosen items from our collections can be won by people who realise that even something simple like going online for a few moments and bidding on a red carpet dress or a pair of shoes can help look after the environment.”
Other participating fashion brands include Mulberry, Piers Atkinson and James Long, while celebrities include Hugh Laurie and Judi Dench have also donated a range of personalised items.

Madonna’s iconic black bustier has sold at auction for £45,000.
The custom-made piece – created by Los Angeles-based store Trashy Lingerie – was worn with fishnet tights by the singer during her 1987 ‘Who’s That Girl’ tour, and went under the hammer in China for way above its pre-sale estimate of £4,000 to £5,000.
Previously displayed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Ohio and The Frederick’s of Hollywood Museum in Los Angeles, the garment was sold by Beverly Hills-based auctioneers Julien’s Auctions at the Ponte resort in Macau, China, alongside 23 other pieces of Madonna memorabilia.
Among the other items on sale were a signed copy of the star’s risque 1992 ‘Sex’ book and a recording of the song ‘Simon Says’ alongside her band Emmy and the Emmy’s, with the auction drawing in a total of over £62,000.
Darren Julien, owner of Julien’s Auctions, said: “When you’re buying these things, you’re buying a memory.”
The outfit was specially selected for Madonna’s first world tour – which took place 24 years ago – by her stylist and costume designer Martha Stewart.
She said at the time: “The most important ingredients are the crop top, the bare midriff, a hip-hugger skirt or pants and lingerie straps showing under your top.”

Julien MacDonald is set to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
The British fashion designer will head to the African mountain where he will scale the dizzying 19,340 foot heights for children’s charities TAS and Chance UK, although he continues to be “dubious” he will be able to do it.
He told vogue.co.uk: “When I leave home tonight I’ll have my boots on, my hats, my big coat, my rucksack, the lot.
“I have never packed for a holiday where I haven’t been able to include my nice clothes and sandals. Instead I’ve got a hot water bottle, plasters, thermal socks and a sleeping bag. I’m a bit dubious.”
However, Julien has been preparing well by breaking in his special walking boots.
He said: “I do get some odd looks when I’m walking around Notting Hill in my hiking boots – I haven’t taken them off for four months.
“People keep asking me ‘Are those boots some sort of new fashion trend?’ I say ‘No, actually I’m climbing Kilimanjaro.’ I managed to take them off for the show though, so at least that’s something. I’ve just been trying to get used to walking 11-hour stretches – it’s not easy.”

The actress Sienna Miller has donated her favourite pairs of shoes to the charity “Small Steps Project”, which raises awareness of children in Cambodia working on landfill sites.
Along with other celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Colin Firth and Eva Green, Sienna will be auctioning off her very favourite shoes, with the profit going to the Small Steps Project, at the Royal Society of Medicine on the 12th of October.
The charity was started by celebrity journalist Amy Hanson, who was shocked by the poverty and living conditions in Cambodia when she visited in 2008. She said about her time there: “When I went to Cambodia, I witnessed huge landfills filled with our waste and excess packaging where the local children would look for scraps to sell in order to support their families. Ideally we want to raise enough money to get the children away from the rubbish dumps and into schools, but for now we’re focusing on providing durable boots to prevent the children from harming themselves with the shards of glass and sharp objects on the ground.”
A very worthy cause. If you happen to be the same shoe size as Sienna, and you’ve got money to burn then get down to that auction in October!

Fergie has launched her second fragrance, Outspoken Intense.
The Black Eyed Peas singer has created a follow-up to her first scent Outspoken with make-up brand Avon, and she explained she wanted to add a little more “edge” to the perfume this time around.
She told People: “I had so much fun developing and launching my first fragrance with Avon, so for my second fragrance, I really wanted something with a little more edge.
“Outspoken Intense is a provocative blend of sexy confidence and daring femininity that captures the thrill and excitement of being centre stage.
“You feel an electrifying rush – a feeling like no other.”
The perfume contains a blend of blackberry, starfruit and passion flowers.
Fergie has previously claimed fate led her to collaborate with Avon because her grandmother worked as a saleswoman for the door-to-door cosmetics brand.
She said: “They approached me, and what girl doesn’t want to have a fragrance? What was interesting to me was that my grandma was an Avon lady. My mom used to help her package all the Avon stuff and have these little parties, so for me it was just a sign. I also love all the work they do with breast cancer and cancer survivors.”

Diane von Furstenberg, Alexander Wang and Proenza Schouler have joined forces to help earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan.
The designers contributed samples to a two-day sale held in New York’s Bowery Hotel over the weekend, with all proceeds going to Japan Society’s Japan Earthquake Relief Fund, the Red Cross and the New York City Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Fund.
Derek Lam and Altuzarra were among the other designers to help out in a bid to raise funds for the country after the March 11 natural disasters, which have so far killed more than 10,000 people, with 17,000 still missing.
Paul Smith – whose label has 138 stores within Japan – has spoken of his concern for his employees there.
He said: “We are relieved to report that none of our staff in Japan have lost their lives or been injured as a result of the earthquake and tsunami.
“However, several staff are based in some of the worst affected areas in the North East of the country, including Sendai, and our thoughts are with them and their families in these difficult days.”
Speaking in support of the Japan Tsunami Appeal last week, he admitted his label had suffered and said he plans to visit the country to try and help rectify the aftermath.
He said: “Since the events of March 11 we have been in daily contact with our office in Tokyo and with our Japanese partners.
“Obviously, business is affected in the short term, but we remain fully committed to all our operations in Japan and to helping our licensees in any way we can. To that end, I will be visiting Tokyo at the beginning of April as planned.”

Madonna’s plans to build a school for girls in Malawi have been “discontinued”.
The ‘Celebration’ singer pledged to build an academy in the African country following her adoption of now five-year-old son David in 2006, but the $3.8 million she has put into the project through her charitable foundation Raising Malawi has so far not developed into an educational establishment.
In an email to contributors to the school fund from the Kabbalah Centre International in Los Angeles, Michael Berg – who co-founded the charity with the pop star, who is a follower of the mystical faith, and the centre – claimed original plans were not to be finished.
According to the New York Times newspaper, he said: “A thoughtful decision has been made to discontinue plans for the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls, as it was originally conceived.”
The board of directors at the charitable organisation has been replaced and a caretaker board, including the 52-year-old singer, has taken over.
Madonna – who also adopted now six-year-old Mercy from Malawi in 2009, joining children Lourdes, 14, and Rocco, 10 – admits she is “frustrated” at the development because of the lack of education in the country.
She said in a statement: “There is a real education crisis in Malawi, 67 per cent of girls don’t go to secondary school.
“Our team is going to work hard to address this in every way we can.”
It has not been determined exactly what has happened to the $3.8 million, with Trevor Nielsen from the Global Philanthropy Group – who Madonna recruited last year when initial signs of trouble were brewing at her charity – claiming funds have not all been “accounted for”.
He said: “Despite $3.8 million having been spent by the previous management team, the project has not broken ground, there was no title to the land and there was, over all, a startling lack of accountability on the part of the management team in Malawi and the management team in the United States.
“We have yet to determine exactly what happened to all of that $3.8 million. We have not accounted for all the funds that were used.”

Naomi Campbell is opening a shop in London.
The supermodel has joined forces with shopping centre Westfield for the pop-up store, which will open its doors between April 6 to 13 to sell designer items in aid of The Prince’s Trust charity.
Among the products up for grabs will be a Vivienne Westwood evening dress previously worn by the British beauty, and a Tom Ford suit donned by comedian David Walliams.
In addition, labels including Stella McCartney, Mulberry, Givenchy and Christopher Kane will donate pieces to the shop, while fashion set designer Michael Howells will be responsible for dressing the store windows.
Naomi will also be joined behind the till by a string of as-yet unnamed famous faces, with mystery guest DJs also promised to boost the shopping experience.
The Prince’s Trust benefits young people who need practical and financial backing in order to turn their lives around.
The supermodel’s previous altruistic efforts include her annual Fashion for Relief catwalk show, and a collection of t-shirts, which were sold to raise money for the charity.

Last September we told you about a fashion collaboration between Speedo and sustainable fashion label, From Somewhere.
The pair joined up to create a collection of dresses made using surplus stocks of the revolutionary Speedo LZR Racer suit. Now they’ve got together once again for a new range combining retro 50s styling with a playful modern twist.
Taking practical swimwear and mixing it with high-end fashion trends, the aim is to create a look that’s designed to be equally at home on the beach or at a party.
Two collections will be available from Selfridges from 21st March and another two will be sold through yoox.com‘s YOOXYGEN’s brand. And not only is is great for those who love their ethical fashion, but a percentage of the proceeds will be donated to Green Cross International, YOOXYGEN’s partner.
We particularly love the Gussy dress, which is made out a selection of gussets from unsold swimwear. See gallery below.

Last night the Saturdays performed a show at the O2 arena to celebrate the first birthday of charity The Transformation Trust, a foundation that focuses on providing extra-curricular activities and opportunities for children in secondary schools as a motivational tool. The concert was free for young people around the country (how jammy is that – maybe I should go back to secondary school and be as lazy as possible to see if I can get into free gigs) and featured other big names on the line-up such as Tinchy Strider, Eliza Doolittle and X-Factor’s Stacey Solomon, who led the crowd in a chorus of “Happy Birthday to you” in honour of the charity.
The Saturdays looked a bit like a girl-band rainbow yesterday, each sporting a super body-con skirt in a different colour teamed up with little white tops to show off their enviable tans. Their white heeled trainers they all sported gave the outfits a cool, sportswear edge on an otherwise hyper-girlie outfit. Check the gallery below to check out what the girls were wearing, and pieces you can find to copy their look.

In Victor Meldrews words “I don’t believe it.” So what’s got us moaning like an old man from One Foot in the Grave? News that Diane von Furstenberg has just released an album to raise money for charity.
We’ve heard of models and actresses turning to the microphone but this one has got to be a first. However, before you get too excited at hearing the designers singing talents (if they’re as good as her designs we’re in for a treat) we have to point out that she actually sung. The album is a compilation of songs by her favourite female artists, including Estelle and Annie Lennox, to mark next week’s International Women’s Day.
‘Proud To Be Woman’ is available to buy from itunes and money raised will be donated to Vital Voices, a charity that champions women’s rights across the globe. We think this is a unique idea and we’re all up for helping charity but we think it may have been better for the designer to do what she does best. We’d definitely buy a charity t-shirt, dress or jumper if she designed one.
Tell us what you think by leaving your comments in the box below.
