Style spotlight: Amanda Seyfried

By Andrea Petrou on April 11th, 2011

Amanda Seyfried has once again made a huge mark on our fashion radar. The actress, who disappeared after her fame on Mama Mia, has made a come back with a ware wolf inspired take of Little Red Riding Hood, aptly named Red Riding Hood.

And with the film tipped to be huge – it’s directed by a Twilight director, Amanda’s fashion profile is sure to rise.

Unlike many an actress who go for big gowns and lots of bling in a bid to stand out, Amanda’s style is pretty subtle. The actress is a fan of bodycon frocks, which sit either daringly above the thigh or just above the knee and it seems she’s a fan of those bright colours often opting for purples, blues and turquoises on the red carpet. However, she’s also not afraid to experiment. In the past she’s been snapped in shorts and blazers as well as fairytale style ballgown dresses, which haven’t quite hit the fashion mark.

And of course she’s also no stranger to the classic LBD, wearing a range of these too.

See the gallery below for all her style.

ShinyStyle’s top 5 runway collections of 2010

By Andrea Petrou on December 16th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

Carrying on from our top 10 fashion moments of 2010, I’m looking at some of the highlights of the various Fashion Weeks that have happened this year. From Alexander McQueen’s first runway show under the direction of Sarah Burton, to the oil-slick punk aesthetic at Balenciaga and classic Parisian style at Chanel, each show has been a joy to cover. But when I got down to it and racked my brains for all the collections I’ve pored over in the last year, I’ve found that the five collections in the gallery below have been particularly special. Check them out below. If you have any other collections this year that you think especially deserve a mention, have your say and leave us a comment below.

5. Christian Dior SS2011

Everything about this collection was just somuch fun. John Galliano breathed new life into the 1950s sexpot pin-up style of dress, with bright cherry and blue colours, neon makeup and cheeky sailor hats. If this is how everyone is going to look on the beaches next year (and we hope they do) then it's going to be a very silly, fun summer.

Paris Fashion Week highlights: Chloe

By Andrea Petrou on October 5th, 2010

By Emily Borrett.

Chloe has been one of the most-referenced labels when it’s come to the camel trend this Autumn/Winter with their offering of 70s silhouttes, fabrics in camels and gold and sexy Farrah Fawcett-style hair. Well, fast-forward a couple of decades and you’ve just about arrived at the French label’s Spring/Summer collection, which was very nineties and minimalist

The order of the day seemed to be clean, simple – but not prissy – shapes, the best of which was the funnel-necked princess coat which was sent down the runway in both scarlet and cream with some beautifully ladylike gold buttons, fashion’s favourite fastener at the moment.

While everyone’s favourite camel tones were not completely absent from the collection, in the form of buttery-looking leather crop tops and coffee-coloured pleated chiffon, like many designers at the moment Chloe seemed to be repping their love for good old-fashioned Parisian monochrome in cream and black separates. Having said that, the collection was far from generic, with fashion creative director Hannah MacGibbon really making it Chloe’s own. Curve accentuating pencil skirts and pleated chiffon were teamed up with boxy leather crop tops, deliciously girly sheer midi-skirts were worn with extremely mini miniskirts underneath and the classic high-waisted shorts style was vamped up with hella black leather.

Fashion Tips

Get your shorts ready for summer

By alanamcverry on April 23rd, 2010

It’s only April, but I’ve already seen a few daring souls bare their pins in celebration of the coming summer months. Shorts are an item of clothing that can be done really well, or really horrendously. So check out these tips on this seasons best short buys for every budget.

S1 Khaki .jpg(1) Renewal Military Shorts £35

Turn up shorts are the most flattering way to get away with bearing 90% of your pins. As long as you don’t buy them too tight, where they dig into your flesh. That’s really not attractive. These military style shorts are part of Urban outfitters urban renewal collection. So you can feel eco-friendly and stylishly summery at the same time.

S2 Denim.jpg(2) Cheap Monday Short Denim Belted Short £36

A pair of denim shorts is pretty much a wardrobe essential. Combining it with a high waist and turn ups gives a real fifties feel and will glam up your dressing down.

S6 topshop swirl print.jpeg(4) Topshop swirl print shorts £38

Culottes are always great for summer, breezy, easy and much more feminine than their short counterpart. They also seem to be highly favoured by designers this season, with numerous styles on offer. For an affordable high street version,
head to your nearest topshop for these swirl print culottes.

S6 Cycling shorts.jpeg(5) Topshop Lace trim cycling shorts £10

So, these maybe an item of clothing that only Alexa Chung can get away with. However, under a very short dress or skirt I think these would be a a great addition to an outfit, whilst also protecting your modesty when sitting in the various parks you’ll be touring this summer.

S4 See by chloe.jpeg(6) See by Chloé bow print high waisted shorts £110

These are just adorable grey cotton jersey shorts covered in black bows. High waisted again for a flattering look. Note however, unless you are blessed with a smaller than average rear end, patterns on the bottom half might not do you any favours. So maybe ask an honest friend along before you pass your credit card over.

S3 Richard Nicholl.jpeg(7) Richard Nicoll Striped high-waisted cotton shorts £249

Carrying on the high waisted feel, but with a longer and more flattering cut. Plus with stripes going the ‘right’ way you will feel instantly transformed into the more sylphlike you that you always thought you were inside.

Also check out Alannah’s Tailored Twill shorts, for a more city chic version of this look.

(8) Uniqlo boyfriend colour shorts £15

Cheap and cheerful in a range of colours, these low rise, loose fitting shorts are a must for the summer.

S5 Chloe khaki.jpg(9) Chloé Roll up shorts £634
If price is no question, then these are definitely my favourite shorts available for purchase this season. And as a bonus, they’re pretty timeless. I can see them being taken out year after year, and still looking good. Really flattering cut, with turn ups and great complementary brown and beige shades. To not do my credit card any more damage I’ll be waiting for the sale on these, and wearing them in October, despite the cold, because I like them so much.

Fancy a piece of biscuit? Beige clothing gets a revamp

By alanamcverry on April 20th, 2010

Beige has always had a rough time. The outcast of the colour family, used synonymously to mean dull, boring and OAP. Never seen for it’s positives, always castigated for what it lacked, colour. As if to prove my point, Thebeigesite.co.uk is a site primarily set up to incite mockery at the old. Under the tab ‘old person fashion’ it is stated “Beige is the most common colour for old peoples clothes although mix and not match is also popular”. To counter this slanderous activity on beige’s fair name, it’s about time we gave it a fair hearing. It seems designers this season agree with me, and beige has been refined, revamped and remodulated… and changed it’s name to biscuit. Three reasons to get involved are all subsumed under the inimitable Parisian style of 60s icons Anna Karina, Catherine Deneuve and Francoise Hardy. If you don’t know them, check them out to see some indisputable stylistic panache. Biscuit can only be worn simply, chicly and with clean lines. She’s a hard mistress, but when adorned correctly, she’s definitely worth it. Check out the gallery below for biscuit ensembles, and where to go for the best biscuit buys this summer.

By Andrea Petrou on November 30th, 2009

Chloe.jpgThe economic climate may still be continuing to create problems for us and our wardrobes, but we’ve found something that may help, especially if you have designer clothes you want to sell.

Chic & Seek is a new website that helps those of us who don’t have the time to post items up on Ebay or set up car boot sales by offering a collection service and doing the photography, advert uploads and postage to the buyer for you. Contact sell@chicandseek.com or 020 7229 4308.

And those of us who want to spend some cash can also find some great designer bargains on the site. We’ve just had a scout around and fallen in love with a pair of flat Christian Louboutin’s, going for £85 and this cute casual Chloe top with rushed neck line for £70.

Pheobe Philo for Celine rumors continue to circulate

By Andrea Kiliany Thatcher on August 6th, 2008

Pheobe Philo copy.jpg

While there’s yet to be a confirmation, the French fashion industry is predicting that designer Pheobe Philo may be in place to present her first collection for Celine as early as Spring 09.

The LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton company is said to be working towards a deal with Philo that would be announced in September. This comes after rumors that LVMH rival Gucci Group was seeking a deal with Philo went bust.

It’s been three years since the former Chloe creative director has put forth a collection. P{art of the delay is said to be her request of a salary several times as large as Celine’s current designer, Croatian-born Ivana Omazic.

Yay or Nay Wednesday: new Chloe bags

By Andrea Thatcher on January 30th, 2008

What do you think of the new Chloe bags just arrived at Net-a-Porter? Personally, these bags make me long for an Elvire or the days of the Paddington. From left to right we have the Ada tote, $2,280, the bay bag, a favorite of our UK sister TheBagLady at $1,780, and the Saskia leather tote, $,2005, my least favorite of the bunch. What do you think – yay or nay?

Paris Fashion Week: Chloe

By Andrea Thatcher on October 8th, 2007

Paris%20Fashion%20Week_Chloe.JPG
Chloe’s spring 2008 collection debuted in Paris Saturday, and was full of light and dark chiffon designs with geometric patterns and splashes of color. A large portion of the styles were completely see-through, but designer Paulo Melim Andersson created some interesting shapes to make this transparent apparel wearable in the real world. He layered dresses and designed chiffon pants that were only translucent from the thigh down. The collection also included a slew of light, long cardigans in gray and black and off-the-shoulder numbers. Go to the jump for more pictures from the show.
