Oscar 2010 red carpet predictions: Helen Mirren

By Andrea Petrou on March 7th, 2010

This year iconic British actress Helen Mirren has been nominated for her role in The Last Station. Avid followers of Mirren’s red carpet style will know that the actress always looks elegant in beaded and sleeved frocks made of taffeta, silk and sheer fabrics, which really give her the edge over some other stars.

For the 2007 Oscars the 64 year old, who claims she is “always a mess” unless walking the red carpet, opted for a cream and gold rouched frock by Christian Lacroix with three quarter length beaded sleeves, which she teamed up with Jimmy Choos. She carried on the tradition in 2008 where she opted for a an elegant vibrant red custom-made Georges Chakra satin gown, embellished with Swarovski crystal sleeves and again in 2009 when her slinky frock screamed sophistication, and dare we say, royalty.

So will Dame Helen continue the elegant theme tonight?

We have a strong suspicion she might, and if the rumour mill is anything to go by she may be wearing Christian Lacroix. However it may not be a new style; apparently she asked her publicist if she could pull an old Lacroix out of her closet that she wore to the Oscars a couple years ago.

We have to admit we like her thinking.

Michelle Obama picks Isabel Toledo… But what will she choose for the ball?

Up until now Michelle Obama has been pretty tight-lipped about what she will wear to her husband Obama’s inauguration today but as everyone now knows she chose a sparkling yellow Isabel Toledo outfit for the swearing-in ceremony.

The Toledo dress is slightly similar to the Diane Von Furstenburg sketch drawn up for the ceremony but what she will wear to the ball remains to be seen. The attorney could well go for a dress by one of her favorite designers Maria Cornejo but I’m sure she will have her pick of the frocks! See after the jump for the Christian Lacroix and Carolina Herrera sketches and stay tuned to find out what she ends up choosing!

Paris Fashion Week Spring 2009: Christian Lacroix

By Andrea Thatcher on October 3rd, 2008

There were more painterly florals in Paris, but Christian Lacroix paired them with bold and unexpected details in a 80s-esque color palette. There seems to be a trend sweeping the runways where the details – bows, flounces and accents – are bigger than the dress they’re accenting and larger than life. The jury is out on whether or not the phenomenon distracts from the silhouette or is forging a new silhouette we’ll all embrace in a couple seasons. But Lacroix did it most prettily with feminine colors both jewel-toned and pastel. He really brought the details we love from his haute couture line and infused them into this ready-to-wear collection.

Fall 2008 Couture: Christian Lacroix

By Andrea Thatcher on July 2nd, 2008

Lacroix collage 1 a.jpgClick image to enlarge.

As usual, Christian Lacroix sent out a stream of extravagant costumes down his couture runway to delight the masses. For Lacroix, it seems almost as if he’s taken it down a notch, even while compared to other designers this collection would seem amped up on volume and detail. The shapes, colors, and embroidery combine in ways only Lacroix could make look good, and as usual it’s enchanting.

Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2008: Christian Lacroix

By Andrea Thatcher on January 23rd, 2008

The Christian Lacroix haute couture presentation in Paris yesterday was a study in mixing. Mixing patterns, mixing colors, mixing fabrics, mixing silhouettes – and mixing a drink to bring yourself down from the over-stimulation. Couture isn’t meant to be wearable, it’s true, but we did find the pieces grounded a bit more in reality, like the black ensemble and maroon gown above, the most beautiful. If you click through the jump, you’ll see examples of the more outlandish looks referred to – a sort of mish-mash of Lacroix staples like the gypsy and 18th century woman.

Accessories that sparkle are flying off the shelves this holiday season. Hmm, could it be because ShinyStyle has been so on top of this trend? Apparently we’re not the only ones who can’t take our eyes off of metallics and are bored by anything matte when dressing for a party. Some of the best sellers? Keep reading.
