Madonna’s Material Girl is launching a beauty collection

By Andrea Petrou on July 19th, 2011

Madonna’s Material Girl is launching a beauty collection.

The fashion label – which the singer designs with her 14-year-old daughter Lourdes – will expand to include a range of nail polish, lipgloss, body sprays and lotions in Macy’s New York next month with eye-shadows following in September and Lourdes loves choosing her favourite products.

She explained to WWD: “It was so much fun getting to pick all of my favourite scents for the Material Girl body products and lip glosses. The body products have fun names like Wicked Watermelon, Flirty Fruit, Midnight Magnolia and Sinful Sugar. I chose scents that I loved.”

Lanie List, chief merchandising officer at Iconix Brand Group – who have partnered with Material Girl on the collection – revealed Lourdes has a “very sophisticated eye” but all choices have to be approved by her mother.

She said: “Lola is 14 but she lives in New York City and has a very famous mom, so she has a very sophisticated eye. Lola is here once a month and sometimes more. She brings stuff from her own closet for inspiration. For the bath and body products she probably had 100 scents in front of her. She has a very mature approach to product development.

“Madonna definitely has creative input also. It’s a collaboration between the two. If Lola goes to a place with an idea that Madonna doesn’t think is appropriate for the brand, she’ll veto it. She’s a branding expert.”

Dame Vivienne Westwood is a believer in “quality rather than quantity” when it comes to clothes.

By Andrea Petrou on May 12th, 2011

Dame Vivienne Westwood is a believer in “quality rather than quantity” when it comes to clothes.

The legendary designer says it’s important for people to understand how dangerous it is to the world’s climate for lots of items of clothing to be thrown away so has urged consumers to be sensible when it comes to their purchases.

She revealed to Britain’s Marie Claire magazine: “What I’m really saying is, buy less and choose well. I would like quality rather than quantity. I don’t believe growth is OK if it means one man’s advantage is another man’s disadvantage. I try to concentrate on quality clothing and accessories that are worth having, and to get my people to take less trips by air and stay longer each time they travel. It’s more human, especially if they take time to visit an art gallery while there.”

Vivienne is also encouraging people to make their own clothes as the items will always be something that is unique to them.

She said: “I’m promoting the idea of ‘do it yourself’. Make your own T-shirt by putting a picture in a plastic sleeve and pinning it on. Whatever!”

Kate Hudson “hates” how big her breasts have become since being pregnant.

By Andrea Petrou on April 20th, 2011

Kate Hudson “hates” how big her breasts have become since being pregnant.

The 31-year-old actress – who is expecting her first child with British musician Matt Bellamy – does not like how much her body is changing because it means she cannot wear the clothes she wants to, although she does admit they are fun for “certain things”.

She said: “I hate it. I’m usually an A cup and I’m getting close to a D cup. Big breasts are fun for certain things and really not fun for other things.

“Plus, I love fashion, and having big breasts is not ideal for certain looks. They’re way more fun when you’re not in your clothes. Then, they’re a blast!”

Kate – who also has seven-year-old son from ex-husband Chris Robinson – also reveals she is unlikely to be getting married to Muse star Matt any time soon.

She told US InStyle magazine: “I wouldn’t count it out but Matthew and I kind of skipped that part and went right to the good stuff.”

The Best Way to Buy Plus Size Clothing

By Andrea Petrou on October 1st, 2010

Sponsored post by Simplybe

It was not so long ago that we ladies of a more cuddly build were very limited with our choice of plus size clothes.  Most high street stores would have a pretty minimal selection and manyitems would look hopelessly out of date!  However, since the advent of the internet, things have dramatically changed for the better…

Now that we can purchase our plus size clothes online, everything is so much easier.  Companies such as Simplybe give us a fantastic choice of plus size clothes and every one of their items has plenty to offer in the way of style.  But the best thing of all about buying our clothing over the Net is we can do it at a time that suits us.  This means that shopping for garments is far more relaxing and we do not have to wait around for our turn in that cramped changing room!

Internet-based trading is now very big business indeed and many plus size women are choosing to order their clothes online; and this is no great surprise.  Well-respected companies likeSimplybe, provide their customers with plenty of measurements, so ordering something that just doesn’t fit is extremely unlikely.  But even if we do make a mistake when we are ordering, then it is simply a case of exchanging it for a different size.  We larger girls have never had it so good!

Fashion Crush: Bikini from H! by Henry Holland’s swimwear range

By Andrea Petrou on June 2nd, 2010

Henry Holland swimwear.jpg />

We’ve covered a range of bikini stories today on ShinyStyle but we felt that this bikini from H! by Henry Holland‘s high-summer swimwear range deserved to be labelled as our Fashion Crush of the day.

This gorgeous on-trend floral bikini, is a designer steal coming in at £10 for the top and £10 for the bottoms and looks fantastic teamed up with this leather waistcoat, which again comes in at a very reasonable £35. We think it’ll look amazing teamed up with some denim shorts and flip-flops too.

And it’s also modelled by Fiona Kennedy who entered a competition to have her face included in a one-off print designed by Henry Holland and used on a handbag and scarf in the Autumn H! by Henry Holland range. Henry was so impressed with Fiona’s entry he decided to approach her to model his high summer swim range.

Designer chic modelled by a real person, can it get any better than this?

The sun is shining and many of you are probably counting down to that summer beach holiday.

Many stores such as Miss Selfridge and Oasis also offer separates for ladies with smaller or bigger upper halves and Ultimo is also a great place for those out there that have been blessed with bigger busts. On the other end of the spectrum some highstreet stores also cater for sporty type figures offering padded cups and different tops to really enhance what we’ve been blessed with.

And there’s also great alternatives for those who don’t feel comfortable in flashing their tum or who aren’t too keen on wearing briefs.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be bringing you different ranges for different figures and tastes but to kick start the swimwear style we’ve put together a gallery of on-trend bikinis so you can really make an entrance to the pool or the beach.

By Andrea Petrou on June 1st, 2010

Mango app.jpg

We’ve gone a tiny bit techie here at ShinyStyle recently, telling you about of a range of beauty and fashion iPhone apps which help you save time and money. And although we vowed to leave these over to the girls at ShinyShiny there’s always that one that we can’t resist telling you about. This time it’s Mango.

The Spanish highstreet store has launched a free app, which gives users the latest company news and stay informed of the latest promotions, while being given exclusive discounts.

You can also browse the virtual store assortment and buy clothing quickly, simply and safely. The Mix & Match section simulates a virtual Interactive fitting room where users can upload their own photos and dress up in Mango clothes, while snother section, Favourites, allows users to save their favourite garments in a virtual shopping basket shared with the mango.com website or save a look to purchase it later in store.

There’s also a directory and a store locator, which uses your current location to tell you where the closest Mango store is in case you can’t wait for that top or dress.

Fashion Crush: Miss Selfridge Rosemary Floral Maxi Dress

By Andrea Petrou on May 25th, 2010

Rosemary dress-400.jpg

Maxi dresses are going to be as hot as our predicted summer this season, with many celebs channelling this trend already.

The best thing about a maxi dress is that it can be worn on nearly every occasion from work, to a bar to a summer BBQ. All you need to do is make sure toy have the right accessories and shoes to tone it up or down accordingly.

If you’re a taller than average lady Long Tall Sally and Miss Sixty are perfect places to look, while petite sections in highstreet stores are perfect for smaller girls.

However, this Rosemary Floral Maxi dress from Miss Selfridge is perfect for those of avarage height. We love it because it’s got a slight Cath Kidston feel to it as well as giving a nod to the boho look. Wear to a pub or swing it delicately over your legs for a picnic in the park. And you can’t grumble at the £25 price tag either.

Fashion Crush: Chain & cuff gladiators

By Andrea Petrou on May 24th, 2010

Glads-400.jpg

The sun is still shining and summer wardrobes are finally seeing the light of day. However, there’s always room in that shoe cupboard, walk in wardrobe or rack under the bed for an extra pair of summer shoe lovelies. And we’ve found a pair that we’ll definitely be squeezing into our collection.

These chain and cuff gladiators from Matalan are perfect for ladies who want to give a nod to the rock chick look. Not only do the studs on the ankle of the shoe bring you bang up to date with this trend but the single strap between the big toe is also perfect for ladies looking for that flip flop look too.

Team them up with a plain high waisted skirt, on-trend denim shorts or skinny jeans for a casual fashionable look.

And the £12 price tag means that if they got lost at a festival you won’t be left with a huge dent in your purse.

We’re having a little bit of a video extravaganza over here at ShinyStyle today and who better to continue it with than with Rihanna.

Our second favourite lady to Ms Gaga, has opted for bright pink hair and raunchy, but barely there PVC clothing for her upcoming Rockstar 101 video single. However, she has kept to her signature look with her gorgeous shouldered puff-sleeve jacket.

And there’s also an extra treat for Rihanna fans because she’s also enlisted some help from some famous friends including former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash.

Get down to Libertys’ vintage sale this evening

By Andrea Petrou on May 7th, 2010

Liberty_London_PHOTOSHOT_510x286.jpg

We all like an early Friday after work drink, and we’re sure many of you are packing up as we type this. But those who are still around will be pleased they put in some extra graft.

Instead of hitting the pub tonight get yourself down to Libertys, which is throwing open the doors to its heritage suite on the third floor and hosting a vintage sale.
Judging by Libertys’ designs of old it’s going to be good.

Proceeds go to charity and prices start at £10 meaning you’ll have lots of money to go spend down the pub after. But hurry because it closes at 7!

The sale is on from 12pm till 7pm so what more reason to leave work early do you need?

Is Cheryl designing a fashion line for Kitson?

By Andrea Petrou on May 7th, 2010

Thumbnail image for Cheryl Nikon.jpg

Is Cheryl going to follow in the footsteps of fellow (or should we say ex) WAG Victoria Beckham and start designing? If the rumour mill is anything to go by then the answer is yes.

According to sources the pint size pop princess is in talks with celebrity favourite US store Kitson, to design a line of clothing.

It is thought Cheryl has been in talks with bosses at the store, which is described as a ‘a mix of Topshop and Marc Jacobs,’ and rumours suggest she could be ready to sign up her designing talents very soon.

And it also seems the X-Factor judge could be doing more than designing shoes and clothes. She could also be modelling them too. Watch this space for more details.

Trend Alert: SS2010 Trouser styles and how to wear them

By Andrea Petrou on May 6th, 2010

May is now in full bloom and before we know it the summer months will be upon us. Although the weather is currently not up to much, we’re hoping that we’ll have a heatwave in the next few weeks meaning we can wear our summer style in comfort.

In our excitement to bring you all the latest summer styles such as highwaisted skirts, shorts and maxi dresses, we neglected a key wardrobe must-have for the next few months and that’s of course trousers.

The spring/summer catwalks gave us a huge insight into what we can expect to see and what we should be wearing. Gucci, Missoni and Burberry bought us harem pants, which were either patterned, giving a nod to the tribal trend, or sophisticated and plain.

Designer favourite Balmain as well as Sportmax and Paul and Joe, updated the skinny, adding a khaki military twist and Paul Smith opted for the classic capri pant.

However, one of the most daring trouser trends this year has got to be the floral look as sported by models on the DKNY catwalk.

We’ve put together a gallery of the designer trends and matched them up to the hottest highstreet versions out there as well as giving you a few hints and tips along the way on how to wear each trend and what to avoid depending on your body shape.

Get the Look: Kristen Stewart

By Andrea Petrou on May 5th, 2010

Kristen Stewart has become a style icon in her own right.

Unlike many of her Hollywood counterparts the Twilight star has shunned the girly cutesy look and gone for a funky fashion look which gives an ever so tiny nod to the Gothic trend.

The key part of Kristen’s style is that whatever she wears she looks comfortable in and although she favours casual styles such as jeans, trainers and hoodies, she also looks hot on the red carpet thanks to her choice of little dresses and heels.

We’ve picked our some of Kristen’s best looks and matched up some highstreet versions for you to buy.
