Trend Alert: Tartan

It’s time to get on board with one of this season’s snuggliest and most wearable trends: tartan. No, you don’t have to start dressing like Princess Anne, don’t worry..

Tartan and check fabrics were all over the catwalks for the Autumn/Winter shows, from tough and masculine grey check twin-sets at Yves Saint Laurent to sixties-style checked military coats at Burberry Prorsum and blanket skirts at Rag & Bone.

We’re desperately keeping our eye out for a plaid maxi-skirt that we can wear with tough boots and a simple white T-shirt for for a laid-back 90s grunge look, but no joy yet. However, the high street is already working with this trend well. We love Topshop’s leather and check bomber jacket, which would look so so good with a pair of cigarette pants. Meanwhile at Asos they’re already selling bold tartan capes in eye-catching colours – the chicest way to wrap up warm this winter.

The best variety of tartan fashion, however, is at River Island. Their high-waisted 1940s style trousers worn with a silk blouse would be European perfection. Our top buy though is the checked pair of navy blue lace-up shoes with bow detailing – just put those bad boys on with a tea dress and you’re good to go with a quirky, British look.

Check out the gallery above for our favourite tartan pieces on the high street.

Get inspired by Jessica Alba’s winter look

By Andrea Thatcher on January 30th, 2008

Jessica Alba is doing the talk show circuit this week promoting her creepy new film “The Eye.”

While we might have to cover our eyes if we were to see said film, we can’t get enough glimpses of a wide-eyed alba before her appearance on Letterman.

With fashion week imminent we’re definitely scouring for chic ways to stay warm on city streets and this brown toggle-ish coat is a great one. And we love the peek of red at the bottom too.

By Andrea Thatcher on October 5th, 2007

The term “puffy” might send you reeling for your covers, filling you with a desire to hide for the day. Puffy under eyes, puffy hair, well, most anything puffy is bad. Except for this season’s puffy coats. Say goodbye to the floor-length marshmallow coats you’d only find at sporting goods stores. This season, designers are showing how being warm doesn’t mean being dowdy. This Add Down puffer wrap jacket (left) is chic in this season’s in-color gray and sleek paired with its leather belt, available at Shopbop.com for $361. Or check out this Twelfth St. by Cynthia Vincent cropped puff jacket (right), for $210 at Bluefly.com.

The military look is so in right now. It seems as though pea coats are everywhere! Following this summer’s nautical trend, buttoned-up military looks are hot for fall. This peacoat by Martin Grant is a refershing departure from hum-drum navy in winter white ecru. The jacket is roomy enough that you can wear it over your fave sweater. It’s made in France and will keep you oh-so-toasty during those chilly autumn nights. $1,575.00 at Barneys.

Marc Jacobs fall 2007 gives us wide hats and sleek coats

By Andrea Thatcher on August 31st, 2007

When Marc Jacobs sent his models down the fall runway, gone were the billowy fabrics and layers of his past collections. Instead, Jacobs introduced us to sophisticated women’s wear. Long coats with stiff shoulders, loose trousers, and wide-brimmed hats were inspired by 1970s menswear for women and pants-wearing 1930s screen siren Katherine Hepburn.
